PS3 Ps3 slim started to occasionally freeze in game

My ps3 has never done this before, since a month ago it started freezing mid game once in a while. I thought it was a bad backup but it happens in other games too. I rule out overheating because my temps are never above 65°c.

I did some googling and people suggest it's a hdd issue. I connected my hdd to pc, it shows healthy and has 4000h which is a little, i still have hdds on my desktop that has over 50k hours and still work fine.

Any help?
Would defragmentation using pc fix this?
Or should i back up everything, format the hdd then restore my data?

Thanks.

Can you try playing games from a usb? Mostly to discard a problem with the console itself or just get a new hdd to install

Never, ever, defrag a PS3 HDD if you have data. You will break the encrypted data and lose everything.

Best thing to do is to start diagnosing. Try to get another HDD and replace it with your current one (so you don't lose any data), and run some disc games to check if the issue persists. Remember to install the same CFW.

In-game freezes could mean some capacitors going bad, the PSU not delivering enough power (not enough for the game but enough to not shutdown completely).

Nobody can say for sure. It depends on many factors: materials used for the components, degradation, used time, etc.

If you start noticing more frequent freezes, then it's time to send your console to a proper workshop for a full repair, or even replacing it.

Please take no offense bit you guys need to chill and be more optimistic you freaked the shit out of me.
I did more research and bad tokins or psu have other symptoms. It appears to be corrupt system cache because i have been experimenting with artemis lately and got my ps3 freezed many times and had to hard shut it down several times.

All i had to do was "rebuild data base" from recovery menu and since then i haven't gotten anymore softlocks so far. I found this solution on an old reddit thread.

Thank you for your help and opinions.

The amount of PS3 games with freezing issues is ginormous, especially stuff related to network. I don't know how the question isn't "what game are you playing"

Sometimes (if applicable to oneself) using mod menus on games or altered filebase of the game can cause freezing more frequently as well.

Or in situation like playing an online match on PS3 sometimes other modders have capability to freeze consoles or end matches if they feel nuisanced or perhaps are just doing it to ruin everyone else's game play experience

Another thing is for games that have save files which are able to become very large like Fallout 3 or New Vegas beginning to freeze every couple of hours if save files get beyond 15MB

If thermal paste is wearing, replace it with something decent like arctic silver and also keep heat regulation in mind maybe pay for de-lid or look into how you can do it manually because there are ways if not have one already.

Not saying these are things for now but maybe in future as these consoles are only getting older and will probably need it sooner or later.
