Which is the better one, I am leaning towards flash writer as I would like to have developer like freedom with my PS3, I am brand new to th PS3 hb scene, any opinion appreciated.

flash writer only supports 4.90 and 4.91 fully. older versions are missing checks. it was updated because ps3toolset was down. it is mainly recommended only if you can not use internet with the ps3 for some unavoidable reason. needs HFW in all cases.

ps3toolset support 4.75 and higher. it is safer but must be used online. many other features and can be used on ofw even with bad bt/wifi/disc drive.

best to use toolset if you can.

Thank you very much I appreciate it. After asking around it seems that Toolset is better, I originally thought it would be the inverse because having a CFW that is not dependent on an external site seems better but I guess not :) Thanks!

you only have flash once. after that the website is not needed (nor internet).

if a bad version of the offline tool was released, it will be on the internet forever. it might brick ps3s for years. the website can be taken offline if there is a problem and no more bricks would be made.

Ah ok, so flash is more likely to brick a console?

No, exactly.

"if a bad version of the offline tool was released" it would brick, not just one, but several PS3 consoles, even if the tool were quickly withdrawn. These tools are quickly replicated in other repositories and are also distributed offline, making difficult to control the damage.

The latest offline flashers for 4.90 and 4.91 implement several checks, reducing the chance of a potential brick. But always there is a small chance of bricking, even with the official ps3toolset. For instance, if there is a power outage in middle of the flashing process that normally takes a few seconds.

Older flashers for 4.82, 4.84, or 4.85 also work fine, but they lack the latest checks implemented by lmn7. Therefore, the probability of a brick is low, but higher than with ps3toolset or newer flashers for 4.90 or 4.91.
