PS3 will not reboot, can't install any firmware

I'm having a strange issue with my PS3 Slim (CECH-2503A)

It's had CFW on it for a while, and this weekend I updated Evilnat to 4.89. Everything seemed fine except I couldn't play any PS2 games - the disc would mount but then just hang on a "no signal" screen, no buttons did anything and the only way to reset was to hold the power button for 8-12 seconds and force a shutdown. Tried a few PS2 games, same issue every time. I saw there was an update available to evilnat 4.89.2 so I decided to upgrade, booted into recovery mode, installed firmware, but when it completed and tried to reboot the system just hanged, again on a no signal screen. Since then I haven't been able to get the ps3 to boot. If I try to start the ps3 it powers on, green light, but locks up with no signal and the only way to power down again is to hold the power button. Took the HDD out, power on, screen comes up saying couldn't find storage, so looks like a HDD problem. Since then I've tried multiple HDDs, low level formatted, but every time it gets to a point of installing the firmware where a reboot needs to happen (formatting the drive, if it gets past that once the firmware is installed), always the same, it just locks up on a no signal screen and I have to force shutdown again. The HDDs are fine I've tried them in another PS3 on OFW.

Pulling my hair out because I can't find any other similar issues online. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Small update - finally got the PS3 to boot into the xmb, evilnat 4.89 installed.

Did nothing else, installed nothing, just pressed the power button to turn off the PS3.

Pressed the PS button on the co trolley to turn it back on and..... nothing. No signal screen once again, controller won't pair (4 flashing lights), power button doesn't do anything. What the hell is wrong with this thing

Final update for now. Managed to install rebuild, just to see if it makes a difference. It doesn't. If the ps3 powers down the only way to get it to come back on is to hold the power button down and wait for the 2nd beep to reset the display options. Then it boots, detects HDMI, switches resolution etc. Even then I only manage to get that 2nd beep maybe 1 in 5 attempts. An L2 soft reboot from the xmb is completely fine, powering down seems to kill it

Thanks for the reply!

Just changed out the battery. It was a bit of a hassle, had to take out the motherboard to get to it so I changed the thermal compound while I was in there. Put it all back together and (so far) no issues! Thanks again

Looks like I spoke too soon...

Same issue, if the console tries to reboot it just locks up. I might just put OFW back on it to see if it's the CFW causing issues or if the console itself has a problem

Been on Your place I would install another CFW, e.g older like well tested Rebug 4.86.1 Lite. Putting OFW on it will cut You out with all possible solutions until again You hack it. I read few times about HDD detection problems on Evilnat CFW (first on 4.88.1 when many people was forced to format).

Just noticed autocorrect let me down in a post above (rebuild=rebug) - I am currently on Rebug 4.84 and the issue is still the same. I'm guessing there is a way to turn on debug logging? Maybe that would at least show me where it is getting stuck when trying to reboot.

If I go to the power menu and shutdown the console it works just fine, PS3 shuts off, and will turn on again normally. Rebooting breaks it
