Recommend Thermal Paste for PS3 Slim Delided

Dear All,

As commonly known, PS3 is famous for extremely high temperatures and overheat, well I have delided my PS3 Slim and install new thermal paste on the CPU and RSX underneath the IHS, namely Coller MasterGel Maker, it was the only thermal paste available on an IT store, well my Cell never reaches 50 degrees, is always under that value but RSX is almost 10 to 15 degrees hotter than the CPU, don't know If this thermal paste is adequate for it, which thermal paste you recommend for the RSX?

My PS3 is a 2500x model btw.

Thanks

taking advantage of the topic, is it normal for Cell to be 10 degrees hotter than RSX? For example, Cell at 64, RSX 54.

The paste will do its job fine as long as u applied it correctly so it wont be that. If anything it just mayb a case on the RSX side the surfaces on the IHS or heat sinks may not be 100% making true contact which can be a common issue straight from factory so only thing u can do to rule it out is check how flat both of these surfaces are.

Think of it like a cars head, if u dont machine both head and blocks surfaces 100% flat ur going to run into issues.

Is it normal a difference of between 10 to 15, was booting Crysis 2, CPU 49, RSX 63

No, that indicates an issue with the higher temp. Whether it need a delid or just the thermal paste replacement on the IHS. replace the paste of the IHS first then test it, if the temps are still abnormally different then you might need to do a delid.

It's common for them to be within 4 - 6 degrees of eachother with the RSX normally being slightly higher then the CELL.

which thermal paste you recommend for the RSX?

Something like Arctic MX-4, Corsair XTM50 or Noctua NT-H2 will do the job. I personally use Arctic MX-4 on my 5 PS3's and 2 PC's CPU and GPU as well as any chipset heatsinks on the MB. I even used it on an mSATA SSD I added a custom heatsink to reduce them temps of it and it works great.

Does any here knows if not connecting dvd drive will make ps3 boot? My system is on a rebug firmware, most other systems xbox and so on boot without dvd.

Need to buy mx4 for the rsx the cell is working nice, probably the thermal paste I bought is recommended only for cpu not gpu

Yes it will boot without the bluray. Mx4 is what I use when I delid and its very good.

Awesome thanks for the reply gonna remove the blue ray, I don't use it at all and the famous ribbon cable for 2500 and forward models is a pain to insert. Also for better air flow is better not having it at all.

Makes no difference ... thermal compound is for either CPU or GPU and other things that require a heatsink to transfer heat.

Doesn't work that way on a PS3, you have to do both at the same time as it's one big heatsink that covers the CELL and RSX at the same time. They don't have seperate heatsinks.

SuperSlims are the only difference where the RSX has a copper heat pipe straight to the die instead of a block as it has no IHS on these RSX's but the copper pipe is attached to the main heatsink block so when you remove it you remove the heatsink for both the CELL and RSX.

Issue here was, the thermal paste I got was quite stick and hard to spray probably it was already dry out, never seen a thermal paste like it, probably got an old stock with some years ahead and these are the results of that, need to replace with the mx 4. Problem is that thermal paste is normally sold out.

Already replace thermals with MX 4, the older one was dry, I guess this new thermal paste needs some days to achieve best results. Don't know if anyone has experienced the same, when u change thermals on the die of the rsx you get weird temps like 0 and 7, and after some reboots, get normal temps.

Bit hard to see but am i wrong in thinking there is still the old thermal adhesive present on top of the GPU's rams in 1st photo?? did u remove all the adhesive (not thermal paste) from the under side of the IHS's as well?? Same with the CPU u still have the silicon glue present, is this the same for the underside of that IHS too?? If so this would more than likely not be letting them make the best contact so cleaning these up better may help.

MX-4 doesnt have a set time to see best results should work straight away.

Is not thermal paste is glue and silicone Sony uses them to attach the ihs do the die, the thermal paste is only on top of the die, the memories on the rsx don't use thermal paste at all.

One thing werid is that when I delid the rsx a little capacitor was loose, but I don't see where it was in the first place, most of them is just to clean the voltage, probably this one reduced voltage a little bit and probably I'm making a little overclock to the rsx hence the high temperature, alright rsx reached 63 and cell 49, I guess 63 for rsx is a safe temp correct?

PS3 are so cheap now and there are heaps of them on sale if this rsx gets burned just gonna buy another console.

my slim CPU and rsx always reached 60c++, I suggest open the plastic shells while playing games so the fan caught more air, i have experienced, the fan speed is lower than before. you don't need thermal pastes, thermal paste most used on superslims because they work harder than slims and fat vers. also if ur cpu/rsx is 45nm, I suggest using the thermal pastes. if u feel laggy in-game, use the thermal paste. but if you only want to keep your rsx cool don't waste your dad money lads.

also, u can download the fan controller to keep rsx cool (CFW only)

RSX its a reality synthesizer, like GPU in computer. its smoothing 3D video on your HDMI, stabling FPS to 60fps (depending on your PS3 version) Don't be surprised if RSX is hotter than CPU

its doesnt matter what brand you use, but whatever if you want to use the pastes or not, i just give a suggestion to not spend money with useless things.

Booting Uncharted to stress the chips, getting Cell 49 and rsx 63 64 as you can see, also my ps3 slim has been modded to have an extra fan on top of the cooler, can't understand these values

Rsx does use thermal paste in middle on the die the 4 ram chips used thermal glue you delid rsx then scrape glue of the 4 ram chips clean the rsx die then apply small amount of mx4 to die and put the heat sink back and carefully reassemble.
