PS2 Recommended Settings for Valkyrie Profile 2 using SMB?

Looking at the compatibility list it mentions using Mode 3 and 6 to get around the anti-cheat, which apparently corrupts your save irreparably if it's tripped. This is something I wish to avoid of course, so if there's anyone else that has experience playing the game through SMB that would be great.
 
I think it depends on the OPL version!

I am not sure if it works on the newer builds.
 
If the anti cheat doesn't interfere then there's still the issue of a freeze I saw reported on another compatibility list but if it comes to that I'm sure I could use emulator to get past that point. Thanks for replying.
