PS3 Resetting a CFW

Hi. I bought a ps3 slim with evilnat CFW already installed and updated by the previous owner. There is webman installed. I don't know what he installed or modified, such as temperature settings etc.
So i was wondering if there is a way to reset the console that already has a cfw installed, do you know what to do?

You can restore the console via the Settings -> Restore PS3 System and choosing Quick Format.

Here is a video tutorial:

But is it also okay if there is a CFW installed? Will it also reset the settings and delete webman? what if i choose full format instead of quick?

CFW is the same as OFW on its bases, with the difference of allowing you to run unsigned code on it. The rest of things are the same, and work the same.

Doing a system restore will clean everything and prepare the system as it was a first run. You will have to set the date, the WiF, etc.

On the matter of Quick vs. Full, the main difference is the time it takes (Full Format can take 4 hours, at least), but it will format the drive fully, which doesn't make too much sense as the whole drive is encrypted and no data can be recovered by using software data recovery tools.

In our situation, it's enough to do a Quick Format, but it's up to you.

I did it. It also deleted webman mod which i reinstalled. If the old owner has installed the cfw well i just have to go ahead and try to play. I tried the PS3 discs well and a PS2 disc but it doesn't play. I need to understand how to install the games without the disc, is there a guide?

If discs don't work it might be the case that your Blu-Ray drive is broken. It can be replaced with another drive from the same model though tbh a 2nd hand PS3 might be cheaper. You cannot use external (USB) optical drives on the PS3.

To play games without the disc you will need CFW or HEN (which you probably already do) and a backup manager (the most popular is webMAN MOD, but multiMAN and IrisMAN are also common).

You will also need to dump the original game disc. In the case of PS1 and PS2 games it's very easy, as they can be dumped on any PC with an optical drive (if your PC doesn't have an optical drive you can buy an external USB drive for pennies these days). Use ImgBurn to dump the disc to ISO format, then transfer it to the PS3 and put it in the PSXISO directory (for PS1 games) or PS2ISO directory (for PS2 games). You can use a USB disk or copy over the network via FTP.
For PS3 discs it's more complicated, since most PC drives can't read PS3 discs at all. There are a few specific PC optical drives that can, so you can test if your drive can read it (it won't damage your computer or the drive), but most chances it won't be able to. If you have a friend who has a PS3 with CFW / HEN and a working Blu-Ray drive you can just dump it on their PS3 using multiMAN and then transfer it on a USB disk to your PS3. It goes to the GAMES directory if you dumped it as a game folder or to the PS3ISO directory if you dumped it as an ISO file.

I find multiman doesn't tend to read ntfs usb (for me anyway), Irisman does however and for beignners irisman more user friendly so recommend that as a game manager.

@NiQ Dumped PS3BD-ROM on PC needs decryption. You cannot mount encrypted disc image on PS3 because none of paylaods support it. So You need also get key from this disc which cannot be done on PC ODD/ODDW.

You can download an IRD from the aldostools DB.

By which image can be decrypted.
And as I said, key cannot be read on PC ODD/ODDW.
That's true, but my point was that with a compatible PC Blu-Ray drive and an IRD file from the database you can create a decrypted copy that is playable on original hardware, which is one way of playing your games if you don't have access to a PS3 with a working Blu-Ray drive.

That's true.

BTW: You don't need IRD (which is IMO a garbage), just disc key alone.
Yes, but as you said PC drives (even compatible ones) can't read the key from discs, and afaik (maybe I'm mistaken?) there's no online DB of keys, only IRDs.

Hi folks

I have:
Rebug 4.82.2 REX
Rebug Toolbox 02.02.16
WebMan Mod 1.47.09
MultiMan 4.82

Executing Rebug Toolbox, MultiMan and WebMan Mod Upgrade (L1 + X) result all in black screen, so my suspicion is that I do have a problem with faulty BD.

Can I just install Evilnat 4.90 noBD after a PS3 System Restore? Why am I asking this question: Do I need to reapply the steps I did on OFW 3.55 in order to be able to install any CFW?

Many thanks for your help in advance

You do not need to jailbreak again or to downgrade to 3.55 just to upgrade from existing CFW to a newer one. Just put the new CFW on a MBR FAT32 formatted USB disk and install as a regular system update.
noBD is only needed when the Blu-Ray controller daughterboard is broken. If the problem is with the drive itself rather than the controller then the regular CFW is better, because noBD breaks backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2. Please note however that if the controller daughterboard is broken and you attempt to install any firmware other than noBD (even OFW!) it will brick your console.

Wow, an answer within minutes. Thanks a lot.

Is there a good way to distinguish between the faulty Blu-Ray drive and the broken Blu-Ray controller daughterboard?
Could I take the drive and attach it to my PC in order to see if it is working properly?

If the discs spins up when you insert it then it's probably fine.
The PS3 Blu-Ray drives are not compatible with PCs. In fact, different PS3 models use different drives, which are not even compatible with each other. If you have a broken drive then the only replacement is to "borrow" a drive from a dead unit of the exact same model (could be a different region though), and if you also had to replace the daughterboard then you also need to remarry the drive using FSM.

I tried to insert a PS4 game disc, the drive is not even trying to pull in the disc as I would expect. I will try to find an original PS3 game disc in some of those second hand game shops, just to be 100% sure.

The controller is busted then. It's supposed to pull in everything that's shaped like a disc.
Either install noBD and give up backwards compatibility or get a working controller + drive from a dead unit of the same model, transplant and remarry.
