PS2 SCPH-15000 with SCPH-20400 HDD

Problem can lies in non-signed drivers. I suggesting "last Windows" (7 ;)) or Linux Mint (can be live session, no need of installing it).

@Larry Kuzniak If you have original PS3MCA, try below stuff. It is for Linux (eg. Mint with Cinnamon), untested but should work (I don't have PS3MCA to check). It install FMCB v1.966 for all models, with BDM Assault, wLE, and including HDD modules for protokernels.

Remember that you must find ps3mca tool released by Jimmikaelkael in ancient times (MD5 of Linux executable: 47277a60588e8e2a0168d581ad0a5776). Rename "ps3mca-tool" to "PS3MCA Tool.elf" and change attribute to executable (right mouse button on file, check checkbox executing). I cannot add it to archive because contains Magic Gate keys.

After that, connect PS2MC into original PS3MCA and have hope that modern libusb will recognize device.

Only then my script will work.

PS: It will create card image before format it. If you have some saves which want keep, copy that file into safe place because after turning computer off or reset, in live session will be wipeout because all is placed in RAMdisk.

FreeMcBoot 1.966 doesn't work on ProtoKernel models (or at least not on my two SCPH-10000 (1.00 and 1.01 BOOTROM each)

FreeMcBoot 1.953 or PS2BBL will do a better job

Another option, to avoid complications and stuff.

Is to just install kernel patches into their appropriate paths and then install wLaunchELF 4.43x_isr as system update

Boot wLaunchELF from the console and perform the installation FROM the console

thank you for this. I will install Linux Mint this evening. I may have more questions tomorrow if I can't figure everything out.

can you please elaborate on this? I'm new to the PS2 scene. I have a lot of knowledge of Dreamcast stuff, but not PS2.
I've read about needing kernel patches, but I've not found any more information regarding them.
Can you give me a run down on how to perform what you mentioned in the post?

I can make a script...

It should work from windows 10/11

Got an update on my progress. I didn't have much time tonight but I was able to get my Windows 11 to recognize my PS3MCA. I used the ps3mca tool and formatted an original 8mb sony MC and did a full install of 1.93. It completed the install. I put the MC in the PS2 and booted it up. I finally got a Free Mcboot splash screen. After a few seconds it took me to the PS2 home page and there was nothing there except broswer and settings. So, progress, but not quite there. Maybe I can replace some files in the 1.93 tool to load 1.953. Any ideas?

Morning update, I copied files from the freemcboot 1.953 to the 1.93 installer and reinstalled the MC. I put it in the PS2 and held R1 during boot and the ulaunchelf screen came on. I was able to select the scph-20400 hard drive and power it on. So now I need to add games to the hdd. Hopefully it is working now. If i dont hold R1 during boot, the freemcboot flash screen shows up but then it goes to the home screen as normal with only the stock PS2 options available.

Ok, I am most likely good to go now. I used the freemcboot 1.94 with ps3mca and installed it. I now get a modified broswer. There is scrambled words on it, but openps2loader works witht he SSD installed in my SCPH-20400. I can now see and boot all the games I have on the SSD. Im sure there is a better version of freemcboot that doesnt have the giberish on the menu, but its working for what I need it for.
I may try different installs on different memory cards to see the results, but im happy with what I got.

Ok, I am at a standstill. I can get the Freemcboot splash screen, but the Browser is the stock PS2 Browser.
If I hold R1 during boot, it loads LaunchELF. But I don't know where to go from there. It does see my external HDD, but it doesn't see any games on it. Any suggestions?
Seems like you have hacked OSDSYS disabled on config. Hold START to fire the configurator app
