PS2 SSD vs HDD

I have a ps2 to which i put this hard drive Crucial BX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch Internal SSD - Up to 540MB/s - CT1000BX500SSD1 and I would like to put a large one without spending much, I would go back to the classic hdisk Seagate BarraCuda, 2 TB, Internal Hard Drive, SATA 6 GBit/s, 3.5", 7200 RPM, 64 MB Cache for Desktop PC, ST2000DM008 tests say it's faster than the ssd ...is it worth it? thank you

and this?
Seagate BarraCuda, 2 TB, Hard Disk Interno, SATA da 6 GBit/s, 2,5", 5.400 RPM, Cache da 128 MB per PC Desktop e PC Portatili (ST2000LM015)

Are you going to use FMCB or FHDB?

As for games (using OPL), since the cache-gamelist has been made there isn't that much difference in loading the gamelist.

I use the Barracuda ST2000LM015 since 2015/16 it is perfect, silent, cool, never had a problem either using the official NA or clones. On some games you have to turn down the DMA since any new HDD is too fast for Ps2 standards.

hello thanks for reply i have fhdb, how can i know when disable dma? where can i disable it? ok tomorrow i will buy the hdd that i post

DMA is in OPL options, it is on UDMA4 (the faster one) on default. it is good that way for 90% of games with this HDD but on some ones you have to turn down the speed for avoiding audio problems or FMV stuttering.

I use FMCB. With FHDB, if you fill up the 2TB HDD the Ps2 will take some seconds to boot (while it would be very quick with an SSD).
However I think you can disable the HDD check at Ps2 startup in FMCB Configurator, so you'll avoid the problem also on a mechanical HDD.

ok but do you have a normal hdd? or ssd?

what is the advantage that opl controls the hd in boot?

OPL have nothing to do with the HDD check at startup, it is related to FHDB. I'm not much experienced on that since i just tried FHDB a couple times out or curiosity but as i said I use FMCB.

In practice when you power-on the Ps2, also FHDB makes the HDD to start-up and a partition check will be made. So the more partitions do you have the more time it will take to boot-up. But I'm pretty sure you can disable it.

Also drive jumpers can limiting SATA speed. Not all HDDs models offering that, but this is also an option (how to is described on a sticker and/or HDD manual). And yeah, jumpers like on PATA drives. ;]

BTW: PS2 will not read above 2TiB drives, it is APA limit. So to format such drive, user must first limiting available space by setting up HPA area on PC using eg. hdparm.

That's not quite correct! It depends on the logical position of the +OPL-Partition!

What???????

Does it????

That is NOT correct! It is NOT an "APA-Limit" but a limit of 32Bit Sector-addressing!!!

You're right, better to specify it. @Mauro78b Create a 2048MB +OPL partition just after you format the HDD. So you'll have it before all the games.
It is something quite easy to correct anyway. Simply delete your first installed game (or more if needed to free 2GB of space) and create the +OPL partition, then re-install the game.

Yes, on a mechanical HDD the check takes a good while. For example (check at 3:50):

Installing PS2 FHDB 1.966 On 2TB Hard Drive 2021 - YouTube

He doesn't even has games installed. I have a 80GB HDD i.e. that even full of games is very quick to start, in practice the Ps2 starts as normal (as using FMCB). But on large HDD (if filled up) you have to wait rather a long time for the Ps2 to reach the OSDSYS. There are several videos also on YT that show it.
