I just ordered another batch of artic silver 5. When i get it im gonna open my ps3 and check how the paste spreaded as i use the dot in middle technique on both chips. As you said the cpu should be the highest maybe its because the paste didnt spread well enough to the corners. I done some research and the rsx heats up on the corners too so i will repaste both chips again and put some on the corners to make sure the whole ihs is covered as possible. Then I'll check the performance again it might improve a lot more. That could be the cause.
Some people spread the paste using a card but im not gonna use that technique as too much paste can hinder the system performance too and the pressure of the heat sink will do the job spreading it around.
Playing last of us and temps now are stable at cpu 70c rsx 74c. With a new repaste it might lower the rsx a lot more we'll see. :)
 
You can also drill some holes on the console....i mean to do a case mod.

I've done that and trust me, my ps3 temps have dropped drastically. The temps were above 60% before and now they have dropped by 10%.

Btw :- Above 70° too is dangerous.

Yeah your temps are really good!
I'm waiting for the thermal paste to arrive maybe it'll be here tommorow and then im opening the ps3 again and check it out.
I might try and do the card method to spread the thermal paste all over the ihs and then see if the results improve instead of the pea method as i did first.
Hopefully there wont be any airbubbles on it and I'll let you know how it goes.
What's the case mod you've done?
Is it too hard to do?
I'll look on youtube see if i can find some and see how its done.
I'm not very good with drilling and I dont wanna ruin the ps3 case.
I think the temps I'm getting aren't that bad but considering the rsx is always hotter might be a signal that maybe the pea method isn't the best. With pcs its the best way but might not be the best way with a ps3. Hopefully i can keep these temps under 70c without heavy loading the fan.
 
You can get the case mod done by a professional. However, i would recommend you to stop play 'the last of us'. This game tends to overheat the ps3.

Yeah i stopped playing it as i was only at the start. Still have it installed but ill get back to it when hopefully this issue is fixed. Alien isolation also pushes the system. Had a go at Singularity and temps were rsx 70c and cpu 60c or so.
Just switched mine on and installing bioshock.
Temps are cpu 54 rsx 54 surprisingly enough but im sure soon as i start playing temps will go up.

Have you properly connected the power supply to the motherboard?
Why is it not turning on? :(

That's really unfortunate.
Did you remove the IHS plate on the CELL/RSX?

Anyways our ps3s issue a warning if it becomes really hot. If it keeps persisting on that then it needs urgent maintnance.
Just keep it on 75c max auto should be alright. If the fans runs really loud theres nothing much that can be done except changing thermal paste or trying to find an expert that can perform ihs removal and repaste the chips.

Your temperature recommendation has brought a change in the fan noise. I set it to AUTO at 73dC with minimum fan speed of 45. I has worked but praying no damage should be caused. I'll upload pics when I become a bit free.

Thats good.
Gamerx9 mentioned that running around 70c can also be dangerous so try and keep it under that.
More intensive games will push the system harder so for example if you set max temp to 65c the fan will go louder to maintain that temp and try to keep it lower than that.
45% fan speed isnt much loud.
Today I've set my temp max to 65c and min fan speed 35%.
Gonna try few games see how it goes.
Tommorow the thermo paste might pop in the mail and I'm gonna do the card spread method. Fingers crossed my ps3 wont die!

Do well to check if the PSU has sit well on the motherboard pins (if console is SLIM). If not solved, take your time to assemble the console & reassemble the parts again. Make sure the metal plate beneath the board is correctly fixed. All the best honourable.

Alright.
Don't be worried all will definitely be successful provided you take your time to do the assembling & reassembling. Make sure all parts are connected well before you power the console.

Totally.
I'll be taking my time disassembling and reassembling as before. You don't wanna put too much force removing them parts specially off the motherboard.
I got a feeling that this card spread method is gonna work.
Keep those temps under 70c and 45% fan speed is not a bad rate. If the fan fires up its just keeping whatever threshold youve set down.
And thats all really.
I'll see if i can lower my temps with a more effective spread tommorow.

The thing is that i changed my thermal paste 2 months ago ( it was a poor quality one that i bought on ebay)

But since i bought a new artic silver 5....i wanted to apply it.

I dissembled my ps3, the motherboard was glued to the heat sink....this was maybe because of the the thermal paste. But i didn't want to take the risk. I reassembled all the parts. It was then that my ps3 wouldn't switch on.

Thats what im afraid of.
Artic silver 5 tends to do the same and can be very sticky the trick is not to apply much force on the mobo by bending it else you can damage something.
Thats very unfortunate really and you had really good temps imo.
 
I still have a super slim working at its finest. The majority of my games are stored there.

I used the CECH 25xx only for ps2 and retro games. But now i think that i'll get it repair by a professional.
 
Got the thermal paste this afternoon just finished reassembling everything and the temps seem to have improved a bit.
Atm just idling on control fan utiliy both the cpu and rsx are sitting at 61c.
In game the rsx still tends to go bit higher than the cpu but I'm starting to think it's normal as the rsx is meant to process all the graphics while the cpu just takes care of all the computations. Usually that's how it is on pcs anyways games tend to be heavier on the graphics chip.
In order to improve the temps any further i would have to remove the ihs boards and apply new thermal paste on the chips themselves but I'm not going to do it because it's very risky , i dont have the tools for it and this requires someone with good experience doing such which I dont. So for now I'm good with this.
I also had a bit of a hard time removing the motherboard as artic silver 5 is very sticky so i recommend take your time and use a flat head screw driver on the sides where those gold bits are and try to push it up all around the motherboard to try and unglue the chips. Do it with a lot of care.
I also had to remove the heatsink screws on the side and try to wiggle it a bit so the paste would unglue off the chips.
Take your time doing this and have patience.
Try not to bend the mobo too much by applying too much pressure on the sides so you wont break anything.
For how to apply thermal paste on a ps3 i recommend this guy as he seems to know what hes doing as he repairs a lot of ps3s.

As long as the temps dont differ too much from another its fine.
As for me i think my temps are good.
Idle in control fan utility cpu61c rsx61c payload mode.
Remember, if you want to improve the temps more ihs removal is required.
I've also removed sman and will just be using fan control utility to check temps i dont think the ps3 will overheat now specially after a fresh thermal paste change. Will use payload mode to keep it safe so both chips wont reach dangerous levels else if damage is caused youll see what happens on the video.
