Temperatures

Hi, so I'm currently using manual fan control with my PS3 because I play PS2 Classics and WebMan doesn't seem to handle dynamic fan control while playing them. I cleaned my PS3 inside, though I didn't replace the thermal paste yet. Currently my fan settings are at 35% and I'm getting 62° Cell and 58° RSX while playing SmackDown Here Comes the Pain (PS2 Classic), system has been on for well over an hour and I've been playing for around 20 minutes, Idle temps on the XMB are around 54°. Are these temperatures acceptable or should I raise the fan speed a bit more?

40 percent is advisable, you don't need to use manual. You can set the PS2 speed in the auto fan control.

I also advise liquid metal on the RSX and CPU dye, this will require a full de-lid though. Thus reduces the temps by another 5 degrees in most cases.

you don't need to change anything, the temperatures are fine. They will decrease even more if you open and change the thermal paste, if you do, put an MX-4 or better, less than that I don't recommend it.

in your case I don't recommend delid much less liquid metal.

Your temps are fine... You only need to think about replacing thermal paste or changing fan speeds if your temps start pushing mid to high 70s.

The CPU dye loses contact with the CPU heat spreader over time. This is because the CPU heat spreader is not straight. When you run PS2 emulation the CPU works the hardest to maintain the emulation. Because of the design issue with the CPU not making contact with the heat spreader it works harder than it should to run the emulator.

So changing the paste will definitely help but if you don't want to do a de-lid, use naked snakes eraser mod to push the CPU dye towards the heat spreader. This will lower CPU temps lowering the risk of GLOD failure.

I've never seen temperatures higher than 70 with this PS3, and that was before I took it apart and deep cleaned it. I do have a tube of MX4 on standby so I might change it at some point and I'll try the eraser mod when that time comes but from what I gather I should be ok for now? I don't wanna delid it unless it's absolutely necessary as that can go terribly wrong lol

Also I have to use manual settings for the fan because WebMan mod doesn't use the PS2 fan settings for PKG games unfortunately (unless there was an update for that? I've been away from the scene for a while)

Thanks to everyone for all the comments/advice

Yep, change paste, do the eraser mod and use manual speed for PKG games.

The CPU will lose contact with the spreader at some point it's just a matter of time. If you do the mod as a preventative measure it will put less strain on the surrounding capacitors. This will increase the longevity of your console.
