PS2 [Testers Needed] OPL internal exfat 2TB+ HDD and multi-BDM devices

I've been using this for about a month with zero problems (Crucial BX300 240GB SSD), tested around 30 games. One problem that has arisen since v1.2.0.3 onwards is launching apps (particularly popstarter games via the apps page) over SMB; hangs on "Loading Config", v1.2.0.2 apps launch fine. This doesn't happen with PS2 games over SMB.

In conf_apps.cfg:
GTA1=smb:/APPS/SB.GTA1.ELF

GTA1.VCD in the POPS folder and SB.GTA1.ELF in APPS folder on PC, as an example.

No other issues though, for PS2 stuff its been perfect, even played the English Translation Hack of Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix which never booted before on HDD for me.

I have previously been using OPL 0.93 and 1.00 with an HDD formatted with HDL Dump. Unfortunately no games are listed under the HDD list when I use this software. Should the HDD still be compatible or do I need to do a complete reformat to exfat?

It will still work, you need to set HDD device start mode to either manual or auto.

It is already set to auto, but the HDD games list is blank. I tried setting to manual and refreshing but still no luck. Also noticed when I start the app, it takes a lot longer to load than standard 0.93 and 1.00. Are there other settings I should be changing?

Hello, I've searched the whole forum and I can't find a solution to my problem, I use the Open-PS2-Loader version of grimdoomer 1.2.0.5 beta and I don't have any problem in particular on games,

but on the ARTs which are slow to load, between each cover it takes 5 seconds and it's very painful, I use a PS2 FAT + an 8TB 5400 rpm HDD in exFat, do you have a solution for the media to be fluid ?

before using the OPL version of grimdoomer I used an OPL with this same HDD networked with a Raspebery pi 3b and the media was fluid, and before I had at the very beginning a 2TB HDD in PS2 format in the console with OPL standard 1.1.0 and media was smooth too. :culpability:

try to defrag the HDD 1st.

Hello, I am new to PS2 modding in general. I have been successful in getting the exfat partition working on my 250GB 7200 rpm hdd for ps2 games. I recently updated to 1.2.0.5 and have had great stability for the ps2 games I have been currently playing. (I am thinking about upgrading the capacity later) I don't see any documentation on how Popstarter should work for PS1 games using exfat as the forum posts I see on PSX place mention about making a new partition with the old file system. Should I treat the HDD like a flash drive and have it list as an app or whats the best way to solve this? Thanks

Been using v1.2.0.5-1991 Beta with no functional issues (games load from hdd just fine and so does artwork) however when i try to change the theme, i hit ok and when it sends me back to the options menu it reverts to the default theme after a second (i can tell because the font changes back. I can't save the config with a new theme because it reverts itself to default at the options screen every time. I'm loading the .ELF from FMCB mc1 if that makes a difference.

Ok so i formatted to exFAT and installed the v1.2.0.5 1991 beta and put a couple games on the drive. Pop it in and boot up OPL and nothing shows up for hdd. Put back in pc and CD and DVD folders are empty.

Phat PS2
6tb WD drive

dont know what i was doing to duplicate it. dont know if it was the programs i was trying to use to format it or what but i finally got it to work with AOMEI so all good. much easier to transfer files around. another note is that before when i would reconnect the drive to my pc i had to restart the pc for it to be detected now connects fine.

New build v1.2.0.6-1996 is available: https://github.com/grimdoomer/Open-PS2-Loader/releases/tag/v1.2.0.6-1996-Beta

Change log:
  • Fixed issues with changing themes reverting to default before being able to save changes
  • Changed loading process for png artwork, png art files should load 2-3x faster now
  • Fixed parsing issues with cnf files, should prevent infinite loops for bad cnf files
  • Added UDMA 5/6 support (OPL_UDMA_PLUS.elf)
This build fixes some issues with changing themes and parsing bad CNF files which would cause an infinite loop and OPL to "freeze" on startup.

For artwork I have changed the loading process for png files which should cause them to load 2-3x faster than before. I would recommend using jpg files for artwork though, as they will load faster than png files (and probably bmp files, though I haven't tested bmp files myself).

I have also added experimental support for UDMA 5 and 6, which will allow you to read and write data from the HDD at the highest speed it supports. This is only enabled in the OPL_UDMA_PLUS.ELF file. Upon booting that elf file OPL with auto detect the highest UDMA most supported by the HDD and set that as the default speed. You will still be able to set custom UDMA speeds in per-game settings that will override the auto detect speed.

I don't know if this will give any performance gains in games or not as it's really only beneficial in certain circumstances. I also released a speed test tool that can be used to test the read speed of internal HDDs, check for errors during data transfers, and display info on the HDD such as the sector size. You can find a download and complete description of the tool and tests it runs here: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/hddtester-speed-test-udma-5-6-support.40648/

If you're experiencing issues with slow loading times, or OPL not displaying any games on the HDD, I recommend running this tool and checking the sector size is set to 512, and run speed tests #5 and #7, and posting pictures of the main menu screen (the one containing the HDD info), and the results from both tests. If any of the tests display a FAILED result then there's definitely something wrong such as bad or failing HDD adapter, bad connection to the HDD/console, ribbon cable for the IDA/SATA board not seated correctly, etc.

Thanks for the update, i run hdd tester this is the result

How do i selected udma 6 as default udma mode?

I'm not sure what you're trying to do since you didn't post the results of any of the speed tests. You don't select the UDMA mode in HDDTester, it will select the modes itself. If you just want to use UDMA 6 in OPL then just use the OPL_UDMA_PLUS.ELF file which will default to using the highest UDMA mode the drive supports.

Ah ok.. i missunderstood, i thought to use udma 6 i need to enabled it using hdd tester. I will change to udma_plus to test it

all test on hddtester pass. in latest build v1.2.0.6-1996-Beta on MC(cant get hdd games to appear if on usb) i cant get into game settings. starts to switch screens then goes back to game list. if tried multiple times the game list disappears and to make it reappear you need to go into settings and click ok for it to rescan.

Hi I'm new to this whole scene and only recently purchased a fat Ps2 scph-30002R. I have been getting the same errors as Vodkanakas after the new version (v1.2.0.6-1996-Beta). Hard drive is a Western Digital 2TB- WD20EZBX with RGEEK SATA Interface Network Adapter. All test on hdd tester is pass too.
Got to say great job with this build of Opl Grimdoomer. I have about 160 games on my hard drive and so far I have had none that do not work! Keep up the good work! Thank you!
