PS2 [Tutorial] FMCB Installation with Free DVD Boot

PLEASE USE THE GREAT PS2 AIO GUIDE. I WILL NOT UPDATE THIS GUIDE FURTHER.

FMCB Installation with FreeDVDBoot

Or, the prelude to The Great PS2 AIO Guide.

The Great PS2 AIO Guide is now complete (bar a section dedicated to FreeDVDBoot)
Find it HERE.

All Slim models are now compatible. Choose the ISO that matches your DVD Player Firmware.
Credit goes to @CTurt for developing this exploit.

As you may have heard, a new exploit has been discovered that allows for the running of unsigned code such as homebrew and even games. The only difference with this exploit is its simplicity, it requires only a blank DVD-R and a DVD burner.
This is a quick and dirty tutorial to install FMCB onto a Ps2 Memory Card using this new exploit, Free DVD Boot (are we calling this one FDVDB?).
This is also a sort of prelude to my current work in progress, The Great AIO Ps2 Guide (every time I make some progress, something new hits the scene and I hold off)
Without further ado, here we go:

FMBC Installation

  • Before we get started, we need to download a few things.

First we need to get the premade FDVDB ISO from CTurts github page, found HERE.
Next we are going to need the FMCB installation package, found HERE.
And lastly, we will need some kind of disk burning software, I use IMGBurn, found HERE.

Hardware wise, you will need a USB flash drive, an Official Ps2 Memory Card and, of course, a DVD-R and DVD burner.

  • As previously mentioned, this exploit was developed and tested on DVD Firmware 3.10E. So your milage may differ if your ps2 has a different version.
So lets check what version we have before moving forward.

    - Boot Ps2
    - At the main Ps2 screen (OSDSYS):
    - Tap Triangle
    - A list will appear containing all the version numbers of the various devices.
    - Under "DVD Player", check your version number.
    - If you have 3.10E, excellent.
    - If you don't have 3.10E, note down your version number and continue as normal through the guide.

Please report back with your DVD Player version number if the exploit was successful (Currently only 3.10E has been confirmed working)

  • Here we are going to copy the FMCB Installation files to the correct location as well as burn the ISO to a DVD.

    First the USB Flash Drive
    - Extract:
    INSTALL folder
    lang folder
    FMCBInstaller.elf
to the root of an USB flash drive
    - Insert USB into Ps2

    Then the DVD
    - Open IMGBurn
    - Select "Write Image File to Disc"
    - Click the little folder icon under Source
    - Navigate and select the Free DVD Boot ISO
    - Select your CD/DVD Burner
    - Set burn speed at half the recommended disc speed and use reputable blank discs like Verbatim
    - Select the Write option bottom left of window
    - Wait for burning to complete.

  • Now we move onto the final step. Installing FMCB onto a Ps2 Memory Card.

    - Insert Official Memory Card (to install FMCB onto)
    - Insert USB Flash Drive
    - Set system language to English
    - Insert FDVDB disk
    - Allow Ps2 to boot from disk
    - The screen may flicker
    - uLaunchELF will start
    - Select File Browser
    - Select 'mass'
    - Select 'FMCBInstaller.elf'
    - FMCBInstaller will now start
    - Use R1 and L1 to navigate menus
    - Navigate to 'Memory Card Menu'
    - If you want to back up anything from your memory card, select 'Dump MC'
    - Select 'Format MC'
    - Allow for format to complete
    - Use L1 to navigate to 'Main Menu'
    - Select 'Install'
    - Select 'Normal'
    - Allow application to finish installing

You are now finished, FMCB has been installed onto you memory card. Awesome stuff.

  • Ahhhhhhhh, the mighty question on everyone's mind after their first exploit... WHAT THE HELL DO I DO NOW?
Well, there's plenty to look for here in the forums, and I "promise" I'll finish this guide one day. Maybe sooner rather than later.
But a couple of suggestions are OPL (Open Ps2 Loader), ESR and Retroarch.

You should add a set of instructions on how to check your DVD Player version

heres a quick 6min video i did going over the whole process, hope it helps

Then it is a READING-Issue, like it tells you.
I am not sure if 3.00 is even compatible, but the issue you experience is unrelated to this.

So I just got my hands on a phat model one of these the other day. I want to say the DVD player version was like 3.01 or something low like that (I don't have the picture in front of me. Left my phone at home today lol).

I'm just curious for a good roadmap, is it advised to update to the latest ps2 system software before trying this?

What do You mean by system software? PS2 firmware cannot be updated internally as it written in ROM memory. The only updates which takes are OSDSYS and DVD Player, first from HDD and MC (which FMCB/FHDB exploiting), second from only MC. On DESR models only from internal flash + HDD, but that's different story.

Oh okay cool, so then I take it there is no advantage or reason to look into even updating the DVD firmware or anything. I was thinking more along the lines of the ps3, but that makes sense.

Advantage in updating (so-called updating) is to install HDD OSD on HDD, FMCB+FHDB, and DVD Player if someone have none-Dragon model and want additional attack vector (fake DVD-Video from DVD-R disc, as rescue media in case something happen with Memory Card, while it it doesn't have NA+HDD).
