PS2 [Tutorial] The Great PS2 AIO Guide

Some MCs are compatible... Your MC doesn't support signing the MC-KELF, because it cannot "challenge" your MC with certain Auth-requests and can not receive a content-key (kc), nor the encrypted Bittable (kbit).

tl;dr it doesn't support MagicGate...

Either get another MC, or use an Exploit which doesn't need a MagicGate-dependent feature...
Fortuna or FunTuna would be an alternative, if you have a Slim.

My issue with using the slim is my only method of loading totally legit backups is through a usb drive, and the PS2 uses USB 1.1 so it runs like ass.
PS: Yes I own a slim PS2 and a fat PS2

There's the Mini/Travel Router method that involves using a network router that has SMB share capabilities and attaching a USB drive to that, then connecting router to ps2 with ethernet cable and use ETH games under OPL.

EDIT - There's alot more to it than what I wrote here. But it's a nudge in the right direction.
I had planned to add Mini/Travel routers but I can't seem to get my one to work correctly (trouble with folder paths) and the steps are going to be slightly different from router to router.

Why exactly do I need an official memory card? I don't have any sort of access to one. What's different about my unofficial card that makes FMCB not work?
Sometimes, the 3rd party manufacturers made the card just a literal memory card; it doesn't have the necessary functions implemented correctly, to allow the boot files to be bind and/or booted.
In some cases I have seen, it just doesn't totally work correctly, even if it does; card does not get detected reliably at boot or the binding does not work right for more than one file due to the memory card's implementation being bugged.

MagicGate wasn't ever an open standard to implement. So at the end of the day, while 3rd party cards might be usable here, YMMV.
I too, have 64MB cards that can be used with FMCB. They got this "CMD9800" ASIC in them. Who knows who made those and whether there is only one type of "CMD9800", but it works better than the other 8MB clone I got that has a glob-top device in it. However, they don't get detected well by the PS2, which isn't really a problem for games because you can just choose to retry loading your saves.

If you have an old laptop floating around you could use that with ethernet cable directly connected to Ps2, changing some IP address settings and share content from there.
I would love to set up such a thing, but I don't have any exploit for my fat PS2, and even if I did I don't have the network kit.

Mmh, ok. Thanks for your reply. I have a second mc. Maybe I should backup the files from this mc manually, then, after copying restore the bin to this mc and I don't have to touch the FMCB mc.

Alternativly, is it possible to copy the FMCB files via the browser from one mc to another and make the other mc also "FMCB-installed"?

@Fin9ersMcGee Would be nice if you can help me again, I'm a bit confused. I just wanted to try to restore the bin file on my second memory card. The savegames on this MC where backed up via ELF on usb in single files. That worked flawless except one savegame from GTA3. When I want to copy the file "1 'S.A.M.'..." it is said that tis file does not exist.

But the more important question: Where was the option to backup or restore the whole MC in a single bin-file? I have done this when I installed FreeMCBoot. But now, with installed and working FMCB on PS2 I can't find the option.

Can somebody explain me what to do?

Its in the FMCB Installer app. Under memory card tools. Restore MC

- Select 'Settings'
- Scroll down and select 'SMB Device Start Mode'
In OPL settings there is no option named SMB device start mode. Only USB, HDD and ETH.

Also im not sure if my router gives an IP address to my PS2 via DHCP. Should the given ip be displayed automatically under "DHCP" in OPL settings?

Typo, SMB is the Windows share protocol, but it's listed under ETH in OPL.

The first time I tried this, my router automatically issued an IP address via DHCP. I found this address by logging into my router and looking it up.
When tried a second time, after a new router upgrade, I had to login to router and statically assign an IP address.
All of these things are widely varied when it comes to each router and its setup/settings. It would be far to much to cover them all.

EDIT - Since I got a newer, feature rich router, I've set static IPs for all of my devices as it makes working things out just that little bit easier.

hmm,dug my ps2 out to try this.fmcb was already on the card and ESR working fine, but have totally lost ESR functions, does not appear or menu and games from previous fmcb install no longer boot, flicks continuously between black screen and menu.is it because i have to repatch and reburn my isos? im using ESR patched discs i used a while back.they all used to boot fine but not since formatting mc and reinstalling fmcb.

As long as You don't want using Free DVD Boot (which is pointless on FMCB/FHDB consoles compatible or as only cheap hacking vector start to install i.e FMCB or launch uLE), You don't need repatching anything. This will never change no matter what ESR version will You use in future or used in the past including past versions.

"ESR Patch" is UDF table hack to fools the Mechacon that this is not PS2 game (which is forbidden for DVD-/+R/RW) but DVD-Video (which is allowed from mentioned earlier optical media).

...AAAAAND... the "+NSR-Sector-Patch", to differentiate between a "DVD-Video-Disc" and an "ESR-/Memento-Disc"!

Look up "FMCB 1.966 Noobie Package"! You should find one in the "Resources" from jolek as well. He modded the visuals A BIT though and I think there is another version of the "Noobie Package" of the newest FMCB (1.966) as well, which looks just like the original Install-Package (only with some apps added).

Thanx for the advice,i have already tried this one but i think its the one i'm gonna stick with.it's a disc /tired laser problem, not sure which but as ive found more esr discs they are booting, partially booting, not booting at all but esr seems fine now, getting the coloured screens on most like i used to.my slim is 16 years old come christmas,so fair game i suppose.OPL working nice so if i gotta re-rip my games,USB is the way to go.i suppose most of this is because i really wanted to try the disc exploit,im such a child.thanks again.

I read about FreeMCBoot and watched a video but I need to buy an adpater for IDE to Sata. Or should I use FreeHDBoot?
