Unable to play PS2 game

I am new to this. I have an unmodified CECH-30xxB PS3.

I followed the great all-in-one guide and everything seemed to go well until after part three. I installed multiman, and it seems to work well.

After that, I too my original Gran Turismo 4 disc and tried to use multiman to make an ISO of it, without success. I get all read errors. To test multiman, I tried to make an image of GTA Liberty city stories for PS3, which went well. I can now start it from HDD.

I used my mac to make an iso of the disc, then transfered the ISO by FTP to my PS3 and tried to start it with multiman. Of course, it did not work.

I then did part 5 of the all-in-one guide and installed everything. The tetris clone works in PS2 classics. I encrypted the ISO, copied it on an USB key, then copied it in the PS2ISO/GT4 folder in my PS3. From then on, nothing sees the ISO as a valid game. multiman indicates there are no valid images, managunz shows no PS2 games, and when I tried to use IRISman to install the game in PS2classics, it seems to work but the game does not appear in the PS2classics menu in XMB.

I am lost. Is there some way to diagnose the problem?

hen cant use ps2 iso. you need to make a ps2classics pkg for each ps2 game. use ps2classics gui on pc to make pkg. each installed game gets his own icon on xmb and virtual memory cards that load automatically.

EDIT:
this is covered in part 7 of the guide. there is also a compatability guide here because some games dont work. you may need a config file when you make the pkg for some games .

Gran Turismo 4 is listed as "minor issues", so this should work.

I will try part 7, but in part 4 of the guide it says PS2 games should work. A correction would be in order.

I went to part 7, and also followed part 6 (install PKG with rap file).

I tried making a package for a known-good game I have on disk (FF X-2), and while I get the "Playstation 2" logo, after that I have a blank screen. Just to make sure, I also packaged GT4, and I get the "Playstation 2" logo, then the warning about not driving in real life like a videogame, then a blank screen.

I rummaged in the forum, and this thread indicates I should sign the package. Is this still valid?

that thread was for han but han was replaced by hen. there is no need to sign pkgs now as far as i understand.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. This saves me from chasing the reason why the ps3xploit ACT/IDFS extractor does not work.

In the meantime, I tried starting over from scratch - reinstalled OFW 4.86 and then the rest. It forced me to remove some corrupted data.

The ps2 games still do not work. Homebrew does, Retroarch PS3 also works for multiple emulators. The weird thing is that I still can use de PS button to quit while the PS2 game is showing the blank screen.

@el_noobo as mentioned above, forget about PS2 gran turismos, and other racing games in general, the burnouts, needs for speeds and WRC's doesnt work well either :/

The FF-X2 is reported as "playable" in the wiki list, and without comments (because there is nothing to mention), this means it should work perfect
But the first thing you should try is to create a PKG with it using the "PS2 classics GUI" (a PC tool), this packaging method is going to encrypt the ISO and is going to work for sure in HEN

After that, incase you want to play other PS2 games you have 2 options, creating a PKG for every PS2 game, this way every PS2 game is going to be displayed with an icon in XMB like if it where an official "PS2 classics" game purchased from the official PSN store (and are going to be displayed under the same folder icon if you reorder contents of XMB game column "by type")

The other option is a wayaround build on top of this, we are cheating the PS3 into thinking all the "PS2 classics" games are the same game
The concept is you need to install a single PKG with the encrypted PS2 ISO inside (named a "PS2 placeholder" or "PS2 launcher")... and when you want to change the game you need to replace the encrypted ISO inside the PKG installation directory, webman have some features to automatize this swapping

But try first with the tool to create "PS2 classics", for a start is more simple

That's where I am stuck, part 7 of the guide. The packages I made with PS2 classics start, but the games themselves don't - after the "Playstation 2" splash, I get a blank screen and no sound. The only thing that happens is if I push the PS button, I get a menu with options like "Quit game", and "turn off controller", which is not part of the games.

Have you checked if the ISO is valid ?, maybe the way how you are creating the ISO doesnt works, or your disc drive had some reading problem

The easyer way to know it is by checking the MD5 of the ISO, and comparing it with the MD5 that appears in redump.org
If the MD5 is identical then the ISO is fine

IIRC, when I was writing the guide, ps2 classics were always a pain in the arse to make work.

I think multiman never played them correctly.... I ended up using Webman MOD instead for loading backups. And they work fine.

Have you installed the "PS2UNIVERSALRAP" PKG? And ps2classics placeholder?

Yup, Multiman does not seem to work except as an FTP server and for PS3 games. I have installed webman MOD yesterday, but I have not tried to launch iso.bin.enc files yet.

I have PS2classics placeholder, but I have not seen a ps2universalrap package anywhere.

Actually.... The UniversalPS2RAP pkg is for ps2classics, like, as if you purchased a ps2 game from the store, but you make the PKG yourself (because most of the time, the game is not available for purchasefrom the store)

Ps2 ISO, that doesn't use the universal rap. That uses Ps2 Placeholder instead.
You mount your game with backup manager, then start ps2 placeholder...

Creating a ps2classic yourself will require the universal rap. As that is its "licence" file to authenticate and allow to boot the game...

The universal rap will cover all the ps2classics you make. So you only have to install once

I use WinCDEmu to make the ISO images. Weird thing is it signals bad sectors on both games. The sizes are a little shorter than on redump.

Looking like your getting bad dumps from your disks....
I would suggest trying IMGBurn to rip your game disks. I'll grab the segment from my guide quickly... BRB

Oh, since at the time I did not trust the online game stores I only have physical disks :)

The rap file you are mentioning is the 2P0001-PS2U10000_00-0000111122223333.rap file that came with PS2Classics GUI, right? I have put that on an USB drive as per the instructions, and it does not seem to be accessed on game start. My USB drive flashes a light when in use.

You need to install that RAP using Package Manager. Just being on the USB isn't enough.

You might be confusing HENs autoRAP feature with this. Hens autoRAP requires you to place rap files in a certain place and HEN takes care of the rest.
But with the universal rap, you usually install it.... At least, that's how I remember doing it...

Give this a try, download IMGBurn.
Then:

- Insert game disc into PC
- Open IMGBurn software
- Select "Create image file from disc"
- Click the Write button (the little image of a disc bottom left of window)
- IMGBurn will start ripping your game to the root of your PCs hard drive.

Once complete, compare ISO MD5.

If you are still having troubles after this, then your game disks may be too damaged to rip...

EDIT: Also worth a mention.... I don't always update my guide with new homebrew versions. So the links may point to older versions. It may be worth looking for the latest

@#%?#$?&$@#&$@$!!
I made a new ISO of FF X-2 with IMGBurn, encoded it then made a package and now the game works!

The resulting ISO had the same size as on redump. So my ISO's were the problem, nothing else. I still can't directly start the ISO's, but converting them to packages is no problem.

Thanks to you all for helping me!

This is how I ended up doing it. Making a ps2classics pkg.
I only managed to get 2 iso.bin.enc working, and they took longer and involved more work.

Good to see your problem solved
