The only reason I updated was because I wanted to go online as I have some Friends on the LBP forums who I play online multiplayer with time to time. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't need to update, its purely to go online. I also like going online to compare trophies with my friends.
Anyway some background info. Recently I had to unplug my PS3 as I've been cleaning my house up to sell it. So I've had to move things around, etc.
So anyway I had the new HEN update PKG file on a USB. To Install it I needed access to the package manager so I start HEN which works fine because it's still the old version. I boot up package manager and install the HEN update. No problems thus far. I tested enabling the new HEN version and it worked! No issues.
The following I have no idea if it had anything to do with the issues, but it may very well have so I'm including this information:
I wanted to connect to the net so I can play LBP online, etc so I plug in some LAN cables. But since everything is packed away in boxes I could only find a short LAN cable. I plug that into the back of PS3 then the other end into a LAN slot in the PC (which is connected to the router with a LAN cable using the other LAN slot). However the PS3 does not like this and doesn't want to connect. I tried re-setting up internet through the network settings menu on the XMB, no joy it doesn't detect any cable connection.
So I switch cables from the long one I have on the PC and use that one to connect the PS3 to the router (because the PS3 is further away from the router than the PC) and I move the router closer and connect the PC to the router using the shorter cable. So now both PC and PS3 are connected independently to the router. Now for some reason, instead of first testing the internet on the PS3 I decided to go to the network settings internet setup in the XMB, I choose easy mode so it re-sets up it all up and the internet is now working on my PS3.
Now the problem starts... ever since that last step I described every time I try to enable HEN two things now occur (or don't occur). The first difference is that the message asking if I want to close the browser doesn't appear even though it always did before every single time I enabled HEN. The second thing that now occured was that I would press circle after enabling HEN to trigger the message to close the browser. However when I hit YES it just remains on the wavy animation forever! No buttons do anything except the PS button. Hitting the PS button activates the red circle symbol (with a dash through it) shows up in the top corner. Holding down the PS button gives me the option to turn off the console or controller.
And that's it. Now I can't use HEN at all. I reinstalling via the automatic installer on the website but it always fails initialization. I get a series of error messages during the install such as "the string variable named xtra_data could not be located in range 0X80100000" and that line keeps repeating. Thats the main error message theres a few other ones but that is the most common.
I've tried just about everything I can think of to either roll back to the previous version HEN that worked or to reinstall the new update. But nothing works. I am so exasperated, I am at the end of my rope. I really want to play my PS3 as I haven't played it for ages (I'm getting withdrawals!!) so I really want to fix this. However as much as I tried I have not been able to find anyone on the internet posting the exact same issue I'm getting.
1. I tried adding the text file boot_plugins.txt that doesn't work.
2. I tried holding R2 while pressing X on enable HEN (supposed to bypass plugins or something?)
3. I tried numerous different auto installing options on PS3Xploit website including alternate install
4. I tried restoring system through the safe mode menu
5. I tried rebuilding database through safe mode menu
6. I tried alternative auto install of HEN, when I select start install from the XMB network menu and asks me to download install file I get an error before the download starts with the suggested action of logging in to PSN and checking downloads or something official like that (obviously doing that won't help)
I am now at the point of formatting my hard drive to start again. I really don't want to though in case I lose some of my data. I mean I backed up everything I could without HEN which is only PS3, PS2 and PS1 save files. But I don't know if backing up PS2Placeholder saves includes just the game that's currently loaded into it or all games that I loaded with PS2P. I have no idea how to backup trophy data. I stand to lose all my RetroArch save data.
Thank you for reading to the end of this long winded post but I wanted to include all information that was possibly relevant to my situation so that anyone who wants to help me has all the facts. I will be so so grateful to anyone who can save me from formatting. God Bless Ya'll!
nobody knows how to help me do they? why do I always get issues that no-one else gets.
I've tried everything. I've spent the last few hours researching problems similar to mine and trying the recommended fix for them with nothing but failed attempt after failed attempt. So I think I may go the formatting route. Please respond (regardless of how long it is after my last post) if you have an idea what the solution might be and you might just save me from formatting. I'll try hold out as long as I can but I'm quite impatient. Very often I need things to be now, I hate waiting for no reason.
But I've posted on other forums and no-one has replied there either. So I'm nearly ready to give up.
How do I backup my RetroArch saves without enabling HEN? I can't can I? So I'm gonna lose all those saves aren't I?
At least I'll have all my PS3 save data and trophies (except for whatever hasn't been synced). Also I should have all my PS2 and PS1 save data too as I've backed up the memory cards. Hopefully my PS2Placeholder Save Data includes not just the game that is currently using PS2P but previous games I've loaded through PS2P. In particular I hope I don't lose my Boku no Natsumiyasumi 2 save files, I've spent hours and hours collecting all the bugs on that game! lol!
Please someone save me from all the erasing of the data! It really hurts my soul!

I did quick format and afterwards when it started for the 'first' time, perplexingly the PS3HEN logo on the right appears for a couple seconds. I go to GAME in the XMB and I have a new icon called 'Install HEN'. So I clicked on it and guess what it did? It froze!
Why is there still stuff remaining after format? Should I have done full format? Also what do I do now? How do I install PS3 HEN if the installer still isn't working? This has become such a nightmare just from trying to update HEN. This sucks soooo much. Why can't the authors of this software have a fail-safe contigency, like during install have an option that allows you to return to previous working system settings. One little bug or issue and you lose all your data and your whole system is stuffed. I guess this is why it's better to remain with official Sony programs because they have massively overcomplicated the homebrew software. It's too complicated for it's own good, then no-one can even help you when things go wrong. You can't even wipe the hard drive and start again. Is my PS3 bricked now?

Just tried installing from the PS3xploit.me website. Initialization Failed! Are you kidding me!?!
Why? I've even formatted!
By the way no internet websites with https works with my system. I have to change it to http. I bet that causes some issues. But why? and How do I fix? Man I wish I never tried to install the update and just left my system as it was before. At least it worked. I'm never gonna be able to use my PS3 again am I? Man this sucks so so much. Everyone who installed the new update is so lucky if everything worked fine. You guys have no idea how lucky you all are!
Is it because the stupid alternate exploit has taken over the regular exploit in the menu so I don't even have the option to do the regular exploit to install it manually. Which was working before just these stupid auto installers totally screw it up. So now I'm forced to restore the system with a full format. And guess how long that will take .... 9.5 FREAKING HOURS!! There are no words to describe how I'm feeling right now.
They really should have developed the Homebrew enabler software a lot better. There are waaaay to many things that can and do go wrong with no way to fix it. I wish I could rewind time to before I tried updating HEN, it just screwed everything up in my PS3 completely! It's worse than a PC! With a PC there is always a way to fix things but with this I have no access to the files or anything I am forced to rely on the programs these basement programmers make. And I suspect they made the software so complicated that they can't predict or keep track of the multitude of errors and bugs that can occur during installation and updates of the software.
I have a feeling it's going to be a long time before my system is usable again. Also when will someone start helping me? Why am I forced to tackle this by myself? No-one cares because it's not happening to them. I thought these forums are for getting help when you need it.
Right now I need to know what to choose: the Format Utility (which doesn't specify a format time) or format through the Restore PS3 System option. But since no-one is even looking at my thread (let alone replying) I'm forced to go it alone and choose by myself. I guess I'll choose Restore PS3 System because if it formats it to blank without any system firmware or anything I won't know what the heck to do. Please somebody I really need some help here

I've tried a full format using system restore to try fix a failed HEN install/update so I can try starting again.
However I just wasted 10 hours as PS3Hen remnants were still there.
If I do full format with the format utility will that delete everything??
If that doesn't work what can I do? Besides buying a new PS3.
I actually have a new HDD for my PC on the way so I can use my old 1TB HDD to use on my PS3.
Will swapping the HDD that's in it with a fresh HDD that's never been used on a PS3 fix my situation?

So I've got a failed HEN update install
I've managed to get rid of the HEN remnants at least what I can see by installing 4.91
But trying to install automatically from PS3xploit.me still fails.
What procedure do I need to follow from here to freshly install PS3 HEN?
So I've worked out how to fix my PS3 all by myself. It was extremely distressing and got no help.
But anyway that's done. I followed this video
everything went smoothly except for the part about activating the system on PSN.
I couldn't login instead I got a new icon that says Sign Up. I think the account login icon dissapeared after I followed some instructions when de-installing HEN to un-activate the system through PSN.
After that I got this icon. When I click on it it says I need to download the latest update to be able to sign in to PSN. Of course I can't do that because I get the message "Until further notice, please remain on this firmware. Visit PS3Xploit.me for new exploit announcements regarding newer firmware versions"
So am I completely unable to use PSN now? What is the fix for this issue? Surely there has to be one?
I tried using Apollo Save Tool to activate account offline. It didn't change anything.
Any suggestions please? I still have a PSN account but it's no longer linked to my PS3 as I stupidly deactivated it thanks to some stupid instructions. So how do I get onto PSN with this new very crappy disfunction update of HEN 3.2.2 or whatever? Surely there must be a way. How does everyone else do it who has come from a fresh install? Correction I have HEN 3.4.0 I think, the newest one
BTW since I deactivated my PS3 in my PSN account does this mean I've lost all the software that I paid for? I still have the original account it's just not linked to my PS3 anymore. How do I re-link it to my newly formatted PS3?

Try completely wiping the drive clean through other means - or atleast enough for the PlayStation 3 to repartition and rework the drive again.
A format doesn't reset your system version? It just deletes all the user data on the drive. Why are you trying to go back to 4.86 anyways?
Just try installing 4.92 HFW and installing HEN from there.
Also the entire PSX place forum wants to help I don't know why you're so despaired bro
A brick would mean the PS3 is a complete paperweight. Yours is still capable of working 99%
Wow you guys really are unhelpful hey? The answer was in the latest HEN update thread ON THIS FORUM! A little textfile called PS3-updates.txt!! Why did noone tell me?? Ive spent so many hours trying to work things out all by myself. And everything that could have went wrong did go wrong and I got 0 help.
Anyway I had to generate a key to make my account work then it says you can't use another persons account on your system. So I have no idea how to fix that issue. When. I talked to a Sony chat agent he assured me I could reactivate my account when I logged in. I even told him that I formatted and it might not recognise my machine. He still assured me that it would. What a liar.
Of course I don't expect anyone is gonna help me in this forum. So again something I have to work out by myself.
never mind the problem has been solved. I don't think anyone is interested in the solution so please delete this thread as I can't find the option to delete it myself

So I've had issues while trying to install the new HEN update. I tried everything and it just wouldn't work. So I spent 10 hours doing a full format and guess what? It's still stuffed. I still get the PS3HEN logo when I boot up and I still have icons for installing HEN (which freeze when I try to click on them). Why hasn't full format fully formatted? Why are HEN leftover data still there? Why didn't it wipe everything?
I tried to get help by making a long description of my issue but it seems to have been deleted. So I don't really wanna type everything up again.
How do I install HEN without using the PS3Xploit.Me site because that doesn't work all I get is
errors.
I got the icon for the alternate install of HEN only. I can't replace it with the regular install of HEN. If I click on it it tries to download but I get error 80029564. I've noticed my PS3 won't load any website that start with https I have to change it to http. It's probably trying to download from a https address. But of course there is no way I can change that is there? Everything is bloody automated I can't input anything anywhere in these exploit installs.
I think my PS3 is bricked now. There must be a way to fix. I beg you guys to please please please help me.
I'm trying to work from the beginning now. I tried installing OFW 4.86
When I went to update from USB storage it said "no applicable update was found"
When I did full format I did it through System Restore. I tried Quick Format through the format utility but it didn't change anything. If I do Full Format through the Format Utility will that do an actual proper format? Or will it just waste 10 hours still leaving crap on my system from the failed PS3HEN update?
My version is 4.91 when I check system settings even after multiple formats.
I really need some help here. Please somebody tell me what I need to do to fix this. I'm really heartbroken about what happened to my PS3, everything I try fails. I need an expert to help me now
Things keep getting worse. Just a few minutes ago I was able to successfully initialise HAN installer using the PS3Xploit website. Launch HAN installation failed ofcourse.
But now for some reason I can't even Initialise successfully anymore.
UPDATE - I think I'm getting somewhere despite no-one being willing to help. In case anyone ever has this issue the fix is to Reinstall official firmware 4.91 using safe mode and then follow this youtube video

UPDATE - I think I'm getting somewhere despite no-one being willing to help. In case anyone ever has this issue the fix is to Reinstall official firmware 4.91 using safe mode and then follow this youtube video
Even though no-one wanted to help me at least please pass this info on to anyone else who has the same issue as me
