Upgrading PS3 Slim Hard Disk with cfw

I have a PS3 Slim with 250GB hard disk. I want to upgrade to a 500GB hard disk, but am sightly confused in regards to the firmware. Some say put the official firmware back but some don't mention this. At the moment the system has Rebug REX.

My course of action is to take existing 250GB hard disk out, replace with 1TB hard disk, Restore PS3 System and when prompted for firmware I put in usb stick with the following:

USB Stick/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP (Rebug REX renamed as PS3UPDAT.PUP)

I don't plan on backing up the current 250GB Hard disk as I have nothing important on it and anything I need I can just reinstall. So can it be done as I have stated or is the official firmware needed at some point?

As far as i know that jalibreak is stored in firmware and firmware does not needs to be removed when you want to upgrade to a new hdd.If you don't want to backup your consoles data then just swap out the existing hdd and plug in the new hdd.

Cheers for that, so it does look like I won't have to do anything firmware related.
I think so.But don't do it right now.First wait for some other members to confirm that you don't have to do anything firmware related.Because i am not 100 % sure.
Hope you find your answer:)

Hello, i want to swap my HDD and want to save the data stored and trophy unlocked too but i haven't signed on my psn in this ps3 and i don't wanna do it now so how can i backup the games installed and data/updates ( almost 30gb size on home folder according to multiman) and trasnfer to the new HDD? On FTP in my pc i always get error copying the files and if is succeded the size of the folder i way lower than 30gb (500mb) how make the change and keep those files? Srry for the bad english.

Yeah you dont need to install OFW, if you dont want to back anything up, remove the old Hard Drive, insert the new one and reinstall the same firmware you already had on the system.

I also upgraded my HDD to 1TB recently but I did not install the same firmware, I installed the latest Rebug 4.85 LITE instead directly on the new HDD, it seems now I cannot play PS2 ISO with Cobra enabled, can be it fixed by installing the old firmware again ?

Edit: I have tried installing different versions of old Rebug but it still doesn't work. Even i tried to re-insert my old HDD now, it does not boot up as it says operating system not found in storage.

He can't do nothing with the hardrive that he takes out to put another one in. He can data backup with a memory stick or hardrive and restore once he put the new hardrive in.

Ur hard drive might if moved out of place.. And if u turn on qa toggle in rebug toolbox you can downgrade to lower firmwares.. And convert to dex if u want the best of ur cfw.
