PS2 What is The Ultimate PS2 Modchip

You would be safer by going with FMCB instead.

And I cannot speak of modchips since I have never used them. I've heard adding in extra hardware like modchips, at least on some consoles, can shorten their lifespan.

There's a popular one called matrix if i am not mistaken. All are good i think. I never seen a bad mod chip ps2 and i live in a 3rd world country so we usually get the cheap stuff. In the early ps2 years at a technician shop it used to cost round 20 bucks all costs included.

I thought that the modchip was an invention by those who modified the PS2 when perhaps they installed something else. I remember someone with a modification to the PS2 (according to him there was a chip installed in the PS2) inserted burned CDs and the PS read them.

modchips are more of a burden nowadays...

with one you can play backups in a simple way, sacrificing stability of homebrew software... and some surprises if the chip cant handle any of the unique aspects of your console model...

I love how everyone is just shitting on modchips rn, like it isnt the only method rn to boot ps1 backups, sure they have their downsides but they can still be used for a lot of things

We all shitting on them because it is source of problems, due their design. We need modern one which can take all current knowledge, so ultimate one (from thread title) could be forged. So what El_Isra said is sadly true. Freedom of homebrew or a handy way to run any disc. Choose Your poison.

Anyway. Superior modchips from times of their glory were: DMS4 (all), Matrix Infinity, Ghost 2 and Crystal Chip 2.0.

PS: And no, it isn't. You have emulators like POPStarter and PS2PSXe, and PS1DRV replacement known as DKWDRV (not only for Decards).

I honestly forgot about those, I have speedrunner syndrome so I wouldn't know (basically can't play anything that is faster than ps2 fd because my run will get rejected)

And thanks for providing examples of rly good modchips

why not today?
Because today we have not any exploit allowing to boot from CD discs on not modded and not exploited console. In future? Maybe. For PSX there is some works which I don't even understand, ^^ for PS2 CD games, something should targeting CDDA handling or as in case of PSX newest hack, maybe the same would be possible for PS2. But current status is that, nothing like that is possible(availble).

If it were for the PS2, you would need to burn the CD for each game. In my opinion it is easier to have a library mounted on a hdd that the ps2 would have access to. I'm not an expert on these things I still have to find out but, in your opinion, compared to the current methods of modified ps2, the possible new way of burning games on CDs and using them from there, would it be better than the other present mods?

You asked why not today and I answered. I didn't debate which is better or worst method, but what is possible and what isn't. ;]

I think, if there isn't a benefit in terms of loading or anything else in using the cd, i don't see the point in having to waste time burning a game into a cd.

FWIW, I have the DMS4 Pro chip in one of my systems since 2005 and never gave me any issues. PS1 cd backups work too which is the only thing FMCB can't do.

Even though there is OPL and playing games off the HDD, SSD, SD is the go to way these days, but in terms of being able to play your discs with soft mods and homebrews apps like Mechapwn, DVD Boot. They don't support Phat models of the PS2, pre 50000 models, I even tried Swap Magic on my Region locked NTSC J 37000 PS2, and it would still give me a Red Error screen with Pal discs. And then there is region free support for PS1 games. With a Modchip I can launch into any region game PS1, PS2, burned discs. But we definitely need a modern Modchip. Modbo's are clones of the Matrix Infinity chip and cannot be updated. The original Matrix Infinity is upgradeable. And it's by far the best Modchip for the PS2, hell it should be considered the best Modchip of all time. It's built from higher quality parts, but it has long since been discontinued, and now it's rare and expensive. And nothing in terms of playing discs, beats booting straight into your discs regardless of their region. A Modchip is compatible accross the board and adds extra functionality to your PS2 paired with a Modchip friendly firmware of Free Mcboot. Overall I'd pick a Region Free PS2 over a Region Locked PS2, any day of the week.

Lot of people will arque that it is not but i disagree. Modbo 5.0 is the ultimate modchip. it has all the latest features and is super reliable. i use it exclusively. it can boot from hdd,mc and even usb. nothing beats that.
