Journey of a Noob in the PS3 World

Journey of a Noob in the PS3 World

  • - Great Advice, Ive Received/Learned, So Far -
    ( WIP Tutorial Begins HERE ) :

( Do NOT use PS3Xploit on CFW = OR IT WILL BRICK YOUR PS3 ! )

Update to OFFICIAL FIRMWARE 4.82 ( TWICE ! = To avoid Corruption ).
PS3Xploit = Coded to work on 4.82 OFW ONLY !

    BEST-console to-have, which-CAN actually-be-exploited ?
    CECH-25xx = Until/Before March-2011 or 1A Datecode (OR OLDER !) per expert-opinion.

    Check "MD5"-Hashes !
    ( ALWAYS! )

    USB-Drives = Formatted "fat32" ONLY ! ( NOT "NTFS" ! NOT "exFAT" ! ).
USB-Drives = Connect in closest port to BD-Drive for PS3Xploit (any other-port for GAMING = to preserve the other one).
USB-Drives = Normal UPDATES go in the following PATH.
    ( ROOT / PS3 / UPDATE / UPDAT.PUP )

"PS3Xploit-v1.0" = Copy the FOLDER to your DESKTOP.
Create "htdocs" FOLDER ( within the PS3Xploit-v1.0 FOLDER ), and ADD the following to it:
    "nand-482" & "nor-482" & "xp_rel_writer10"

    "flsh.hex" = Copy to ROOT of USB-Drive.
Set up a LAN connection between your PS3 and PC (or router).

    PS3-Browser = Set Homepage to "MiniWeb" Server-Address:
Server Address (IP EXAMPLE) = http://192.168.0.2:8000/nor-482.html (on NOR-Consoles).
    ( Address will differ, depending on NOR/NAND, & your PC-IP-Address, EG "192.169.0.2" )

    PS3-Browser = Clean/Delete Browser-Cache.
TURN OFF PS3, TURN ON PS3.
    Start aldostools-modified-"MiniWeb" ( which is included with PS3Xploit-v1.0 ).
    GOTO BROWSER.
    PS3-Browser = Run the correct-file for your model-PS3.
    ( NOR.html, or NAND.html )

Update to CFW ( Rebug 4.82.1 LITE )
( CFW for Noobs to start with. )

Package Manager > Install Package Files > PS3 System Storage.
( You will see PKG files you have to install. )

    Install Rebug Toolbox.
    Start Rebug Toolbox.

Utilities > Toggle QA Flag > Enabled = Allows XMB > UPDATE to whatever Firmware-PUP you like after this.
    Utilities > Create "Packages" Folder.
Selector > Toggle COBRA Mode > Enabled.
HOLD Circle-Button = Quit to XMB.

Package Manager > Install Package Files > Standard.

    Install PSP Launcher (Cobra) v2.0.
    Install webMAN MOD 1.47.08.
    Install multiMAN 4.82.00.
    Install IRISMAN 4.82.

Launch MultiMAN = It will auto-create ISO-folders for all compatible consoles, DVD, and BD.

Game > Refresh (Scan Connected Devices).
Retro > Refresh (Scan Connected Devices).
    Settings > Date Format > MM/DD/YYYY.
    Settings > Time Format > 12-Hour Clock.
Settings > Default Display Mode > TMB (Top media bar)
Settings > Font Preference > Matisse
Settings > Theme Audio > Disable.
Settings > Inactivity Timeout > Disable.
    Settings > Screensaver > Disable.
    Settings > System Auto-Off > Disable.
Settings > Show Temperature Data > Auto (Fahrenheit).
HOLD Circle-Button = Quit to XMB.

    Launch IRISMAN.
    Set Window Position.
    Save Settings.
    START-Button.
Change Current GUI > Grid 8x6 + Cover.
    Initialize FTP server > YES ( to Auto-Enable )
HOLD Circle-Button = Quit to XMB.

    Launch webMAN updater = "WHILE-HOLDING the L1-Button" ( "TAP the X-Button" ).
( You should now have "FULL webMAN MOD" installed after your system reboots. )
webMAN Games > webMAN Setup > PS3 webMAN [Setup]
UN-Check - Enable dynamic Fan Control.
    Check - Autoplay.
Save & "Click Here" to Restart.

XMB > Memory Card Utility > Create New Internal Memory Card

    Create Virtual-Memory-Cards for PS2 (slot 1) and PS1 (slot 2) games.
Triangle-Button = Assign each memory card to the noted-corresponding-SLOT.

    ======================================================================================

Stay on the same firmware for some time, as at this point you have ALOT of things to try.
( See how it all works, before proceeding, I DID ;). )

    No PSN !
( Unless you want to risk getting your console banned ? )

PSN Icons = ARE NOT Interchangeable ( Firmware Dependent ).
Gameboots = ARE NOT Interchangeable ( Firmware Dependent ).
Coldboots = ARE Interchangeable ( so they'll work with any 4.xx CFW ).
4.xx CFW = ARE ALL Compatible with one another ( Themes should be okay too ).
PKG Naming = They always seem weird to me, but CAN be renamed at will without issue.

Coldboot.raf = Limitation from available space in flash.
( Max animation length = 4 seconds, as this limitation was never bypassed )

    Game Formats:
    PS1 = ISO or BIN/CUE ( NOT VCD ! )
    PS2 = ISO
    PSP = ISO ( NOT CSO ! )
    PS3 = ISO
( If anyone knows any other working formats please let me know )

ManaGunZ = Can convert PSP-CSOs to ISO format.
    ManaGunZ = v1.31+ are Compatible with 4.82-Firmware.

    PS2-on-PS3 Emulation:
    (1.02+) ps2_emu.self
    (1.50+) ps2_gxemu.self
    (1.90+) ps2_softemu.self
    (3.70+) ps2_netemu.self

Emulators are not "PS3 Game OS" Elf-Executables, but a "Guest OS" running on LV1.
LV2 "Game OS" is unloaded before emulator is loaded.
You cannot call any LV2 function while emulators are running.

  • Here is my PS3 backstory (shortest version):

I once had a brand new PS3, which a house-guest stole and pawned.
Made me all EMO about ever getting another PS3.
    The End.

Basically, @bguerville (& Team PS3Xploit)s new developments recently have inspired me to finally dive into the PS3 world.
I know the rest of staff right now are thinking, "o_OABOUT FREAKING TIME".

I plan on starting out from scratch by the end of this month, and filling up our PS3-Resource-Section with tons of personally-tested-by-me new-goodies, and then, of course, writing a few tutorials noting my trials and errors as well Im sure, you know, for the Noob in all of us. LOL

So, since Im a PS3 infant, Ill ask some noobish questions before finally making a PS3 console purchase.

    EDIT: PURCHASED = CECH-2501B (JAN-2011) SLIM (320GB)

Read on, to follow along on my "Journey of a Noob in the PS3 World".

1) yes 25xx are iffy when you can't check minver so try for 21xx or less
2)yes exploit only coded to work on 4.82 (if not more files more confusion)
3)I've been with Rebug from the begining, Rebug 4.82.1 is nice and a good one for noobs
4)1st off it is about freakin' time, but anyway security is a must ( me & @pinky have been banned for just having homebrew on our consoles) the less PSN the better. We're here for you every step of the way & again welcome back

Imo the best PS3 model is the CECH-25xx, but as you know are tricky because some of them allows for a cfw permanent installation but others doesnt

If you are going to buy it in a shop, ask directly for a specific model (either CECH-20xx, CECH-21xx, CECH-25xx)
Because the seller is going to show the console to you at some point (for you to see if it has scratches, etc...), and for sure is not going to allow you to try the MinVerChk lol
If is a CECH-25xx you need to:
1) look at the sticker at the back (where it tells CECH-25xx)
2) flip it and look at the sticker at bottom (where it tells the datecode)

If is a CECH-25-xx with the datecode 1A or smaller you are good to buy it (thats the best buy imo)
If is a CECH-20xx or a CECH-21xx you are good to buy it too, no need to check datecode

Btw, in america the datecode is replaced by the literal manufacturing date (as example... "december 2010"), thats fine too
The datecode 1A i mentioned matches with Q1 2011... any datecode or manufacturing date lower than that is ok

Also... if at some point the seller goes suspicious and asks you why you are asking and looking for that info (model and datecodes) you should simply argue that... "someone in internet told to me this models has an awesome motherboard"
Doesnt matters if the seller doesnt believes it, or even if he tryes to convince you that all the motherboards are equal... you should insist because you know... "the client is always right"
It doesnt matters if he thinks you are a paranoid or stupid or an ignorant... dont worry about it
You want that model/s and you have the money... if he have them you will buy it... if he doesnt then no bussiness... is that simple, no drama and not worthy to discuss "why"

With the excellent advice from the both of you, I actually did some shopping today.
Literally 13 retro stores later (yes,THIRTEEN lmao, but I found the specific model/datecode recommended to me, finally lol).
And, now Im back.

This is what Ive got so far to work with:
20171220_215529.jpg
20171220_215853.jpg
20171220_222905.jpg
20171220_222800.jpg
20171220_222247.jpg

Lets do this Fam!

Should I dive right into it, or is there anything I should back up first?
If nothing, I know to update to 4.82 next, but other than that the only CFW I have heard about yet is Rebug.
Nobody else has given any input/feedback yet, unfortunately, to give me any other options, before I start my new adventure.

Opinions please?
How am I doing so far?

@bguerville = Thanks to you and your Team!!
Please chime in here if there is anything I should know before I get antsy and just dive in (sorry, thats the NOOB INSIDE lmfao ;)).

About the CFWs try them all out to see which you like the best, but I would install Rebug 4.82.1 first as it comes with Rebug Toolbox ready to install that way first thing you can do is QA Toggle then up and down between CFW version is as easy as installing whatever PUP you want. Another flavor of Rebug you'll want to test is 4.81.2 REX as it's a mix between retail & debug CFW.

As for the exploit I suggest setting up miniweb with a LAN connection between both PS3 and PC use a small capacity USB stick with an LED (even though I used a Sony 32gb just fine) check hash on flsh.hex and drop on root of USB. On PS3 set the browser home page to blank or better yet the host address of miniweb. you'll definitely be using the nor.html

Okay, sooooo:
3.50 OFW > 4.82 OFW > 4.82.1 CFW (Rebug) > Rebug Toolbox > QA Toggle > 4.81.2 CFW (REX)

Correct?

Should I build a folder tree of all the different options and tools I may need?
Assuming each would have to be in its own PS3\UPDATE folder.
So I could swap/drop in the root of the FAT32 Flash Drive I used to run MinVerChk.

Is everything available on site?
Or should I start preparing to build a collection of OFW/CFW/Tools/Plugins, to add to the Resource Section?

Hmmm, is there anything I should avoid, so I dont get stuck somehow?
Like, once I follow the steps you have noted, is there anything I could do by accident (or update to, thinking its allright) that would prevent me from jumping backNforth between CFWs?

I have no idea what any of that means yet, lol, and I dont have any Flash Drives with an LED, unfortunately.
The FDs I have available at home are all either, PNY (several 16GB Thumb models), or Sandisk (128GB Pen models).

How quickly do you think Ill fill up this 320GB-IHD that came in the PS3?
Should I swap it out for a 1TB laptop drive I have just sitting here waiting for a purpose, like before I get started, or is the 320 plenty?

Follow aldostools' tutorial http://www.psx-place.com/threads/ps...-aldostools-a-simple-rebug-cfw-install.15610/ for the exploit he goes over miniweb hash checking and the rest just substitute Rebug 4.82.1 for the CFW. As for the HAD at current you probably don't have any game discs so I would start with the 320 & and save the 1tb for a just in case, you can always update HDD at a later date

On the CFW let's just get the PS3 jailbroken first and then we'll tackle all that :) I got a few tricks i can tell you about

No PS3 games yet, that is correct, but I do have plenty of PS1,PS2, PSP, BD (plus vintage retro games by the hundreds too lol, however I know these dont use much space at all).
Ill follow your advice and start with the 320GB, and Ill check out aldostools tutorial now.

You read my freakin mind! The Noob-Inside has been itching to just get to it, lol.
Okay, Im going to do this thing, be back shortly. ;) :) :D

EDIT:

System Information still only says "4.82".
Is that normal? No hint of what CFW? Did I get the QA Toggle wrong? Or is it because it said LITE?
I know my PSP states its CFW, from a similar style XMB.

Good news is, for a few seconds during boot, it flashes "REBUG" on the right side of screen.
So I assume twas successful.
Nothing ever gave any indication of problems throughout the process.

I did a LOT of comparing/preparing, before I actually did the PS3Xploit.
Mostly, due to contradicting info between all the links/tuts I used, which were obviously from different sources lol.
Will look into that further tomorrow, now that I have a grasp on how things are done.

Ready for those tipsNtricks now. ;) :) :D
Thanks for all the help so far !!

The coldboot (REBUG) pretty much says your on Rebug CFW, but another way to know is ★Package Manager and ★app_home/PS3_GAME/ in the Games column. Now go to ★Package Manager>★Install Package Files>PS3™ System Storage there you will see Rebug Toolbox click on it to install.

After installing Rebug Toolbox, run it and then go all the way to the right to the Utilities column and Enable Toggle QA Flag. after that go to the second column Selector and Enable Toggle COBRA Mode, frome there hold :but cir: and quit to XMB

Now your ready to install webMAN MOD 1.47.06 multiMAN 4.82.00 and IRISMAN 4.82 download them to PC transfer them to root of USB and install them through ★Package Manager> ★Install Package Files> Standard

I've got them here if it makes it easier https://www.sendspace.com/folder/22xxpq

I'm off to bed, have work in 3½ hours, we all can't be retired like you :-p then break for doctor appointment in 5½ hours & back to work again (tile work, fun, fun, fun)

I already had found them all before I had seen you tried to make it easy lol.
Installed a QA Toggle standalone on the XMB as well.
For WMM, was I just supposed to install the "updater" file, or all of them?
If just the updater, Done. :)

No problem, thanks for the help !!!!!

you shouldn't need QA Toggle as we did that in Rebug Toolbox, Now run the webMAN updater by holding :but l1: when you tap :but x: to run it, now you should have webMAN MOD full installed after system reboots

Ok sleep now we'll continue tomorrow after work or whenever we get back online :) in the meantime check thing out in IRISMAN and multiMAN :-p

Good buy, now you are fully into cfw club :)

My only suggestion is to stay in the same firmware for some time, you dont need to change it, and at this point you have a lot of other things to try to see how it works
I would have installed the latest rebug 4.82 lite though, just because is newer and has the same stability than the other rebugs before (so it will last a few more for you without need to install a newer one)

And with the hdd... i have that same PS3 model with the 320gb hdd, and i still have it like that from factory
I use to play all games in ISO format from internal hdd... and 320gb is ok for me, it fits for a good amount of games, and when i need to replace them i use FTP to transfer PC--->PS3
I also have a toshiba canvio USB hdd but i move the ISO from it ---> to internal PS3 hdd and then i disconnect the USB hdd, i never play with an USB hdd connected (yeah, i should be a "rara avis"). The internal hdd of your PS3 is also a toshiba btw :)
Sony likes that toshiba hdds because are very efficient and are low power, noiseless, fresh, etc...

But maybe i would have changed the hdd by the 1TB you have
Mostly because if you decide to replace it later you are going to have (some) problems to transfer the gamesaves and trophies to the other user profile of the other hdd

@sandungas

:) Thanks!
It has only taken about 11 years to get into the club.
Worth the wait!

Did I not install the correct version of Rebug LITE?
md5= c5da00d59e4d1a7aa599e5d0e21415f8

Its cool that we have the same 320GB model, but to be honest the HD-size didnt matter much to me while shopping.
I totally would have bought one even if it only contained a 20GB HD (not that the 25xx came in that size lol), as long as it had the correct Q1-2011 Datecode/25xx (advised as best, by you :D, THANKS!!!).

After five hours of searching, and just before 10pm, I was about to give up (at a dozen failed locations), when I realized there was one more retro store "nearby" (in the next state, but just over the border from where I currently was at that time), which was about to close .
So I went for it, obviously lol.
The VERY nice lady behind the counter didnt give up on me though (when I struck-out, with all the models they had on display for sale), and she actually had taken the time to search through dozens of units in "the backroom" for me. :D Awesome!

Good to know, that the Toshiba drives are very efficient and all.
I had the same thought as you last night (when I asked the board if I should swap out the 320GB-HD before I start filling up the drive).
Fortunately, I dont think I will be doing any online-gaming (so if that is where trophies come from, no worries).
Besides, I have no need for trophies or stat-feedback on my gaming-skills really, as I already TOTALLY know how good I am. ;)
Also, I dont yet own a single PS3 game, so space isnt a concern at this time.

Is there any issue with using renamed PKG files?
It seems like they are all long and weird LOL.

------------------------------------------------

Thank you again, for all your advice/information/time to date!
All suggestions/opinions are welcome.

Lets do this thing!

Ohh ok, so you are on rebug 4.82 now, i went confused because you was talking before about 4.81 but if you are on 4.82 lite stay in it
Even if you are not going to connect it online, the trophies sometimes are fun to unlock (for fun as a personal challengue), but it depends of the game, some are well designed (kind of trophies that are rewarded for doing something tricky), but others are stupid or imposible to unlock offline
If at some point you get hooked unlocking trophies from a game you like is a bit like your progress (together with the savedata), so it sucks to lost them, lol

With the PKG names there is no problem, you can use any name, spaces, etc...
The RSOD better delete it, lol, never use it, you dont need it and it can make you lose some important data on flash
Coldboots are dependant of firmware versions, so if you are going to try one, be sure it was created with a file base from the same firmware you are using, there are some exceptions with this rule though because some firmwares are compatibles, but because that is hard to know better dont mess around with coldboots
In the worst scenario, with a corrupted coldboot (a.k.a. an RCO file) it can be repaired by reinstalling the same firmware from PUP though, but better dont abuse of this, is better to minimize the writes in flash
preNTFS is for webman/sMAN plugins, and only if you are going to use an external USB hdd in NTFS, otherway you dont need it

1st POST UPDATED !!
In TABS-STYLE to save space.

@sandungas

Done.
I have followed all of your wonderful advice, and deleted anything I didnt-need/shouldnt use.
Updated the first post with all the new information I have received in the past 24 hours.
Is there anything you would recommend I try, or anything I shouldnt try?

Sorry, my mistake what i said about coldboots is wrong, i meant gameboots
The gameboots are the ones that could be firmware version dependant (because are RCO files and inside them there is some xml "code" that works as constructors of the XMB objects, and sometimes sony changes them in between versions)

But with coldboots there is no problem, the name of the file is coldboot.raf
RAF is a fileformat used for animations (the same RAF used inside dynamic themes), and all official firmwares since 2.00 or so uses the same exact coldboot.raf
All the coldboot.raf you are going to find in the internet are going to be compatible, the only limitation is the available space in flash, and the max length of the animation (always 4 seconds or so but this limitation never was bypassed so i guess all them are going to be that length, no need to worry about it)

I wanted to explain this a bit better because now when reading myself i realized the confusion i made

the gameboots seem interchangeable between 4.81 & 4.82 but yes when I was making gameboots I was making the per FW version

sorry @UniqueUserName I'll get back to you when I last couple days has been work & sleep

Hello,

LINK Status = Currently BROKEN.

Can you please provide our community an up to date link ? :)
( So I can fix this issue, and possibly future-proof as well, by adding it to our Resources Section if possible :D )

Also, is this COMPATIBLE with the new 4.82 CFW and/or OFW ? o_O

NOTE TO COMMUNITY :
I will be asking these questions A LOT over the next several weeks. :-p
( As I am currently going through EVERY PS3 Article/Download/Thread on this site ;) )

Thank You All in advance, for your Time/Patience/Understanding !!

it's most likely compatible. coldboots are interchangeable, so they'll work with any 3.xx/4.xx cfw. waves are mostly interchangeable. all 4.xx cfw are compatible with one another. there are some differences such as different offsets for 3.xx cfw. themes should be okay. gameboots and psn icons are firmware dependent, so those are the things that I'd be careful with. it's unlikely they'd brick the system if you used the wrong ones, but they can cause weird graphical glitches.
