PS3 4.87.2: Evilnat's CFW (COBRA v8.20) Released - First COBRA CFW Appears from known PS3 Dev

UPDATE - noBD / noBT / noBD-noBT version released (for broken consoles)
dFollowing the recent release of SEN Enabler the developer behind the homebrew app @Evilnat, has decided to create and release a Custom Firmware (CFW) for 4.87. Now, we have the first CFW appear from a trusted source for 4.87. Evilnat's CFW, the custom firmware is powered by the COBRA 8.20 payload, making it what is known as a "Cobra CFW". Cobra CFW payload comes equipped with additional features and abilities out of the gate like background loading of plugins, ISO Support to name a few, over time a "Standard" type cfw can replicate many Cobra features in Mamba,

For additional 4.87 release's for Homebrew & CFW, check out this post here in the psx-place forums: Then for more information and to see the release thread and discussion checkout the release thread at the link at bottom of the article.

You have quite a few misunderstandings there.
I'm unable to play PS2 ISO's no matter which method I try, is that feature currently not available on firmware 4.87?
Try download Evilnat 4.87.2 again. You can get it HERE. There was an issue on those older models with PS2 games in the first release of 4.87.2. You might have downloaded it before the hotfix. Installing that new version will hopefully fix your PS2 issues.
After doing some research it seems to be because REBUG isn't enabled on the console.
Rebug is a different CFW, its not something you can enable. You could install Rebug CFW if you wanted to but you should not need to
This appeared to be a quick fix as a well-known toolkit named Rebug Toolbox Multi helps enable REBUG and COBRA.... although upon installation and launching it I'm presented with a warning stating this custom firmware by EVILNAT isn't compatible and or not supported.
Evilnat CFW is not Rebug, therefore Rebug toolbox is not made for it. Rebug Toolbox is made for Rebug CFW. Some features will work on other FW, but Rebug specific features will be disabled. That is all that message means.

Cobra is enabled by default in Evilnat CFW.
Before posting this I read through the comments section and see members had success using the EVILNAT 4.87.2 [no-BD] version; however, I can confirm I had the exact same results.
Do not install NoBD FW unless your PS3 has a missing Bluray drive, it will not help with your PS2 issues.

pon installation and launching the Full Edition (Holding L1 while pressing X) the software will reload the native PS3 XMP
That is normal. the app you ran is a installer. The screen will go black and it will reboot onto the XMB. Then you will have webMAN MOD plugin installed and running in the background all the time.
but it will flood my screen with Game Menus which results in the PS3 crashing forcing me to restart manually.
Not sure what you mean by flooding screen with game menus?

Thank you for the quick response! I just double-checked the MD5 hash and confirmed this is the same software I installed.... maybe I missed something huge here...

If I have the PS2 .ISO how would I go about playing it with this CFW from EVILNAT? All the guides I read up on claim you need ccCM and or webMAN to launch it from the directory /dev_hdd0/PS2ISO.

ccCM still doesn't work for me without entering DEBUG mode and webMAN works but doesn't launch the PS2 ISO without going to a black screen and dropping the video.

I am not sure about multiMAN tbh, it has not been updated for a while. I do not know if it is compatible with 4.87, maybe someone else can help there.

It is possible that your ISO rip is bad, I assume you have tried a few PS2 ISOs and a retail PS2 disc? If a PS2 disc does not work then it could be an issue with the CFW, if a PS2 disc works but your ISO does not then its probably an issue with your ISO or setup.

And yeah, to play a PS2ISO all you need is it on dev_hdd0/PS2ISO and to mount it with webMAN MOD, then launch it from the disc icon. ( Note: PS2 games will not work from external drives on any firmware)

If you still have no luck you could try downgrading to Rebug 4.86.1 Lite. To downgrade you should use Rebug Toolbox to QAflag your console. I think THIS version of Rebug Toolbox will work on Evilnat 4.87 to do that. Once QAflag is enabled via the toolbox, you can just downgrade by simply installing Rebug 4.86.1 Lite via USB from the XMB system update icon.

You can get Rebug 4.86.1 Lite HERE. (MD5: a2c79919cafdbb50ccb5ee9589245380)

Some time ago I had to use managunz to create ps2 config files or games didn't start. What is mode debugging on multiman?

You are right that configs are needed sometimes, but @inauguration has the original CECHA model which has full backwards compatibility ps2 hardware inside, so there should be no need for anything like that in this case.

Hey thanks for the cfw, a little buggy, but very simple, i love it! I do have a question though... Is there ANY way possible to add some kind of function that will allow the newer ps4 controllers to use the blasted ps button? I had zero luck using ps3xpad, I could not even get it to work with the xbox one controller. Even when I added in the ps4 controllers VID and PID, it just kept saying failed recognizing device, or when I managed to bring up its main menu, it froze the whole console. I literally spent the entire night trying every last thing every guide for ps3xpad said to do, and none of them make it apparent on how to get any of it working. It says it works with xbox controllers, yet makes no mention whatsoever on how it works, or how to get it to work. Do I plug the one controller in? Do I pair it VIA Bluetooth? Etc,etc. Doing both of those things did nothing even though the plugin was loaded. All it said was unrecognized usb device connected, and when I tried pairing it via Bluetooth, it just kept spitting out an error and to try again, and the included readme made no mention on what to do if any of that happens. Like I said, it makes no mention of how to set up an xbox controller period.

I also read from a lot of places you can use the windows key on keyboards, and that is simply BS, I tried two different keyboards with no luck on that either

So please! I beg of you to maybe add some kind of function into this cfw itself. Ill gladly go through the whole damn process again if it means getting a functional xmb menu outside of a ps3 controller.

Hey, What are the bugs specifically, if you mention them maybe they can fixed in the next version. I am also using this CFW and I have not noticed anything really.

Dude ignore that, that was a complete brain fart on my part. I was thinking of Multiman at the time of writing that, which has nothing to do with your CFW lol. My bad. Multiman seems to have issues with booting you back to the xmb from time to time, it seems to happen if you go into it to fast while its trying to read whatever drives you have in. Waiting a minute before even pressing the ps button after turning it on seems to help lessen the chances of it happening, but I also just got Webman, and it seems to be a lot better for booting stuff, I still use Multiman for file transfer though. I have no been in the Sony CFW scene since I was like 14 years old when I modded my psp.

I was basically just saying it would be fing epic if someone could intergrate an alternative way of bringing up the xmb menu without the ps button, so you could still go in and out of things with just a ps4 controller, without having to get a mayflash adapter, but I actually just ordered one.

I think you mixed me up with Evilnat, This is his CFW, I was just curious if you had bugs.

but I also just got Webman, and it seems to be a lot better for booting stuff,
Yeah, I prefer webMAN MOD too, it has a endless list of useful features. I also use it for most file operations as it has background FTP while on the XMB or even in game.

I wonder if webMAN MOD could simulate the PS button with another button combo or a web command. Maybe. I'm not sure.

/pad.ps3?psbtn should do it but i have not tried.

if you have a bd/media remote or a move navigation controller you can use the PS button on them. i have done that while using a usb gamepad (pc controller) to play games. (sadly some games will not work with gamepad)

ALSO i am excited about act.dat feature! thanks @Evilnat

Oh yeah, I missed that one. Cool.

It's a shame that Cobra plugins are disabled in safe mode, this would be handy for all those with fake controllers and PS4 controllers. But I guess it's safer this way.
ive been lucky with fake ones. i have wired "@play" brand and wireless "Arsenal" brand that work in safe mode. the @play ones are rubbish but other is okay.
