UPDATE 4.88.2: PS3 Developer @Evilnat has updated and released 4.88.2 Evilnat (Cobra 8.3) CFW , there is a number of new options like an added File manager, Option to toggle Cobra version, and various other new options detailed in the changlog provided below. Also the developer has provided a number of fixes and improvements, View all the details of 4.88.2 release of this latest CFW by @Evilnat

.Original release (4.88.1) Developer @Evilnat (creator of releases like SEN Enabler and PAUD Unpacker) has created and released 4.88 EVILNAT's COBRA CFW, following the success of 4.87 Evilnat's CFW, the developer provides another trusted CFW release that provides the Cobra Payload and all the features it brings (note: MAMBA is an alternative to the Cobra Payload, Cobra is included in firmware's where as MAMBA is typically injected in a Standard CEX CFW via a homebrew app. See all the details of this CFW Release below

    Savegames conversion tutorial

    WARNING: This option will overwrite your current savedata in dev_usbXXX, use it with caution

    • Download someone else's savegame for your game of your choice
    • Put the savedata in your pendrive in "X:\PS3\SAVEDATA" (pendrive must be in FAT32)
    • Put in the pendrive in the PS3
    • Select Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Convert Savedata
    • Wait until the conversion finishes
    • Once finished, copy your converted savedata throught XMB "Saved Data Utility (PS3)"
    • Launch your game and load your new savedata


    Creation of act.dat tutorial

    WARNING: The accountID is linked to savedata and trophies, so, if your current user already have a valid accountID and you overwrite it, you will be unable to use your trophies and savedata on that account until you restore the original accountID in xRegistry.sys.


    I recommend to use an empty account without trophies and savedata or an account without accountID.


    To create a fake act.dat, Cobra 8.3 must be enabled, and your PS3 must have at least one account with a valid accountID and launch a game that requires a RIF/RAP license file.

    Cobra will search a valid accountID in all existing accounts and create act.dat while the game is launched through the XMB. If no accountID is found, act.dat will not be created.

    You can create a fake accountID (like reactPSN), to do this go to Network > ★ Custom Firmware Tools > PSN Tools and choose between "Create accountID" or "Overwrite accountID" (Be careful about the last option because if you already have a fake/real accountID it will be overwritten). It is recommended to use these options in an account that does not have an ID. The PS3 will restart if everything went well.

    The tutorial would be the following:
    • Download your purchased PSN game from PS Store
    • Put game RAP file in "X:\exdata" or "/dev_hdd0/exdata"
    • Launch your purchased PSN game
    • Cobra will check if any of your PS3 accounts have accountID
    • Faked act.dat will be created while the game is launching

    If none of your accounts have a valid accountID you will need to create it. To do this log into the local PS3 account where you want to create the accountID. You can see if your current local account has an accountID choosing Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Show accountID.

    To create a faked act.dat do the following:
    • Make sure Cobra 8.3 is enabled
    • Select Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Create accountID
    • Select Network Tab > [★ Custom Firmware Tools] > PSN Tools > Activate account
    • Launch your purchased PSN game
    • Faked act.dat will be created while the game is launching

    Now you have a faked act.dat and your local account is activated. The act.dat file works for every local account, you only need one file for all accounts.


    Block PSN log in

    This method is developed by @DeViL303, it will only work with Cobra enabled, Cobra will block log in on PSN/SEN while the CFW syscalls are enabled, to enable it again you need to disable CFW syscalls completely (you can do it with webMAN MOD, psnpatch, SEN Enabler, etc…).

    If you want to disable this feature, simply delete /dev_flash/vsh/resource/npsignin_plugin.lck

So it works with my latest Cobra's build for 4.84 or @DeViL303's build? Maybe is not a Cobra issue and there is some patch that is causing the issue in that game (vsh, sprx, kernel...), I will take a look
it was DeViL303's pup that i was using. (it think he had the latest files from github in it. because i was able to launch ps2netemu game with no problem.)

if you mean the file for bgtoolset, download it HERE from your computer or phone. Put it on USB. select "Load from USB" in bgtoolset.

So, I'm getting data corrupted on safe mode and system update. I've applied the patch properly from BGtoolset, also did from the post ^ after that didn't work, and I still get data corrupted when trying to install this CFW. I confirmed the hashes at every step along the way. Any help?

Heck, I apologize for even posting. It can't be reiterated enough how much newbies, like myself, need to slow down and follow instructions. I confused loading the BG toolset flash as applying it and had only ever loaded it hence the corrupted cfw installs. Just retraced the steps and successfully got it up and running.
 
I did some testing yesterday out of curiosity about the games crashing on startup with 4.88 EN. As I have no sports games - so far WWE and perhaps PGA tour have crashed on loading - I did some tests on my installed ISO library. The account I did testing on had PSN account, but no automatic login nor password saved for convenience. Also, PSN Patch plugin installed and active. Loader the latest wMM xxx.36, otherwise pretty vanilla system, also none of these games launched previously on this account. My ISO:s ripped from originals with PSN access tested with PSN enabled from PSN Patch plugin:

  • BLUS30720 Dragons Dogma -> No problem whatsoever
  • BLUS30443 Demon's Souls -> No problem whatsoever
  • BLUS30782 Dark Souls I -> No problem whatsoever
  • BLUS41045 Dark Souls II - No problems whatsoever (and yeah, I like SoulsBornes :D )
  • BLES01862 Rocksmith 2014 -> Instant hard crash on start no rection to any of thee controller buttons, had to do power cycle reboot
As per @aldostools instructions I renamed the /dev_hdd0/tmp/wm_res/npsignin_plugin.rco to npsignin_plugin.rco.xxx and Rocksmith started without even a hiccup. Interestingly, after reverting the npsigning plugin rename, Rocksmith started behaving. No matter how I try to start it, it always launches without a fault.

This raises the question, does npsigning_plugin get removed from plugin load list once it vanishes and has to be added manually to get loaded again? Or is this something a game does just on first start which npsignin plugin blocks and once you get the game loading you can re-enable it without probs.

Another observation which might be a huge red herring: All the games affected seems to be western ones. Could there be something jap game developers/studios do differently with regards to PSN signin than western ones?

If CFW syscalls are disabled (removing the mapping to npsignin_plugin.rco) or if the user logins to PSN prior launch the game, the issue freeze should not happen.

I've reported the issue to @DeViL303 and he will be working on a fixed version of the rco

There might be two separate issues here as the account that I tested the games on had PSN account, but one I've never logged on with this console - is there still possibility we're talking of same issue, or could there be two separate ones? Anyway, once the fix is released I'll test it on my "reserve" fatty and see if the issue is gone.

Anyway for me disabling the plugin and re-enabling it fixed the only issue I had with the 4.88 - otherwise I've been very happy with 4.88 Evilnat + wMM xxx.35/36 so far.
 
@Evilnat which font did you use to create the Evilnat cfw coldboot? Or do you have the coldboot in PNG? I wanted to create a PS3 profile picture in my console with your logo.
 
might have a png, but coldboot images are in gtf format. one of the sdk components is d2g iirc with d standing for dds. that's how coldboots are officially made anyway. there are easier ways now though which do use png, I believe. however, you can extract a coldboot by deleting the first 8 bytes, then dropping it into the p3textractor (theme extractor). it will separate each file. then, use g2d (the opposite of d2g) to get the dds of the file. there are 6 images in total, but it doesn't look like evilnat used all of them: 3 are for sd; 3 for hd.
 
looks like it's actually called dds2gtf and gtf2dds (forgot). here's gtf2dds (might be hard to find, but I have it). you don't need the other unless making a coldboot. you just want the image, right?:

Yes, only the image. Thanks for the info. I will have a look into it. Do you have created a tutorial related to coldboot? I don't know where coldboot is located.
 
@Lambada , I forgot, you have to use simply zip on the coldboot after removing the first 8 bytes, then drop that file into the ps3extractor. I did it for you just now. here's the image (in dds format):

I have tried to load Wwe 14 after login on my psn account. Still freezes on black screen

Have you installed the wMM version published today already? From Brewology

This has the potential of fixing the issue, I haven't been able to test the new one yet. The change in this version is fixing the plugin that's potentially causing the issue.
