Today, 250 days passed since 4.88 release. It's the longest period without update since, at least, the 4.84. I made that small table to illustrate it.

I'm thinking that we might not have a 4.89 update because there are no new issues PS3-related on PSN (I know the servers are full of hackers and cheaters, but that happened even before CFW).
My question is: why bother developing and releasing a new FW (which will not add any new feature, just the old "system stability" crap) for a console that is practically dead to Sony?. Even most of the servers for PS3 games were shutted down recently (LittlBigPlanet and Red Dead Redemption, IIRC). And the new PSN authentication algorithm wasn't bypassed yet.
BUT, if we go back Memory Lane, let's remember the PSP 6.61 update almost 4 YEARS after the 6.60 FW.
So, who knows.
They probably need to test it before release. Plus uploading it. Taking in account the pandemic situatio, etc. I'm not so surprised by that delay.4.88 was build at date: 2021 April 12 (around 2 months before it was released)
I cant figure the real reason for this kind of delay, but if they releases a 4.89 (or bigger) probably is going to happen something similar... released some months after it was compiled
Maybe they are trying to make them match with the release dates of new firmwares for the other playstations
Or the other way around... they doesnt wants to release firmwares for several playstations because they knows some of his clients have several consoles (PS3, PS4, PS5, PSVita) and getting advises to update the firmware of all them the same day is a pita
Lets say... if you have 4 firmwares to release it could be better to release 1 firmware every week for a period of 1 month... to improve quality of life
I'm not worried at all. Just a bit curious. Of course they are doing very minimal maintenance. And it will stop someday. Later is better for bluray.@littlebalup Why so worried about 4.89?
The change log of 4.89 is very predictable: "This system software update improves system performance."
The changes in LV1/LV2 kernel are also very predictable: only the build time stamp and version number.
They haven't made changed them since June 2015 (4.75).
The new releases are mainly to update bluray keys. They could update expired certificates, remove services or patch security holes, but that's rare that happens. They are too busy with PS4, PS5 and M$ buying AAA games and their mascot to pay much attention to PS3.
That's something that nobody has done yet because Sony is updating them regularly at least once a year.About that, will we be able to update keys ourself if sony don't anymore?
Anyway the main purpose of the console is gaming. The support for bluray movies was a trojan horse to promote that format and win to the now obsolete HD-DVD.
Yes and doing it ourself may be a good "excuse" for Sony to stop updating. That's something that nobody has done yet because Sony is updating them regularly at least once a year.
IDK. A simple way for casual, non CFW users may be better. As the system files are unlocked, I suppose it would only require some time to reverse and inject the new keys.
But there are other alternatives like decrypt the BDISO on the PC or use other formats.
Like Aldo said, nobody bothered with this so far because it has been taken care of with pup updates however if s#ny were to stop issuing updates, we should be able to take care of key updates ourselves, just like we could add ssl certificates to the trusted store. That was the case in the past. I knows some people, including in my familly, are only using their PS3 for bluray films now. (and they ask me to fix/swap the bluray drive when dead...). I'm sure a lot of people in the same situation. Because they never moved to PS4/PS5, 4K...

And it came at the worst possible time!!! I literally spent the last hour of my life exchanging data from HDDs and USBs so I could put a 2tb into my SSPS3. I got past formatting and then go on to try and get the rest of HEN reinstalled. I get to the part where need to log into the PSN so I can get the features of doing that and it says I need to update to do that. Now that 4.89 is out I guess I have to skip this part for now just so I can get my ps3 running again.PS3 4.89 is OUT
Yep, just got the update on mine too.PS3 4.89 is OUT

This is the second time I've been bamboozled by OFW releases this year! The first time was back in March when I went to update my Nintendo Switch CFW to the newest atmosphere and system OS, and boom the next day OFW 14.0.0 rolls out. Such a crazy year to live in with all of the love the modding community is receiving!
