PS3 4.89 Update is Live! - Discussions / Details about the firmware update

In Firefox on my PC, I signed in to PSN and was prompted to verify by e-mail, but I don't think it's related though I don't think I've ever needed to before, so it is probably just a coincidence.

Then, in Account Settings > Security > Device Setup Password > Generate or Manage Device Setup Passwords it says the following
If prompted on your PS3, PS Vita, PSP or mobile device, you'll need to generate a device setup password. Once you enter this password, you'll be able to sign in using your sign-in ID and account password.

You can revoke the device setup password at any time.
It appears that the device password it generates for you is used instead of the password you set up yourself. This is similar to what MS did on the 360; implementing a device password to substitute the regular one. I just wonder why, as in what is the point, especially now?

Surely that's a give in?
That's been the advice for years since the GeoHot & Kmeaw Firmware.
It's surprising (well, not any more) how many people do not heed the advice, and update at soon as an official firmware is released - losing their jailbreak in the process.

I'm reading from different places that Sony updated to 4.89 to stop hen anyone else heard anything about this?
As far as I can make out so far, the kernel, VSH, the webkit core and the Flash player look totally untouched, in all likelihood, updating HEN should be quick and easy.
The only question mark I haven't checked yet is whether making a HFW is still feasible.

It has been like this for at least 2 years, at least for the PS3 account login, it did not allow login using the account password and did not warn the user about it, it always returned that the password was incorrect, having to go to the sony website blindly and generate that password

How can I signing to PSN without Device?
I don't have smart phone :(
I use Symbian phone Nokia N8 that dosen't support QR :(
Now What should I do now?

The same way you are accessing this forum lol, you can just enter the url address in any web browser and log in from there

i love it! How did you get it to work without refresh? Or how is it refreshing?

Using reload_category_items instead of reload_category that only looks for queries

And a remap to swap the Hen logo

Unfortunately it just swaps the icons not the action and title of the item, i changed the Title to Hen Exploit instead of Enable Hen, so the icon tells the user if it is enabled or not.

Except for technical reasons, why would they want to phase out PSN on PS3? It costs them nothing to maintain and must still make some money so there's no downside here.
To sell other consoles?
They don't even have PS5 to sell to all those ready to buy one as it is and it doesn't look like that's going to change any time soon.

Im willing to bet it costs them a chunk of money on server maintenance, patching, etc, and thats just to keep them lights on. Then you factor in paying devs to maintain legacy api/services that don't bring a ton of revenue, but that bogs down adding new features to systems that do bring revenue.

Those legacy devs eventually get bored and want to move on to something more exciting than maintaining legacy infrastructure and blam! There's no one left that knows how that stuff works. Sure, you could re-write it all to meet modern architectural standards, but that's expensive and they probably rather put money towards the modern stuff. I bet that the fact they're not selling enough ps5 are part of the drive to cut down costs anywhere they can. (source: I deal with very similar problems for a living)

i think PUAD does this, if i remember correctly. Not sure if tar exec can do it or not

I'll give it a try, thanks, I did an HFW 4.88 blindly last year just to learn, but back then, I knew the contents of the .tar.

How will I still play on PSN? I have a Evilnat CFW CECHK fat running 4.88 and I have no idea if you can update a CFW.

I ain't got no fone. Oh well guess it will be like ps1 ps2 from now on for me. OFFLINE!!

The fact it has a qr code doesn't mean you need a smartphone for it, the qr code is just to automatically open the url, the raw url is provided too in those screens, so you can use a PC.

This update seems more like for security reasons than anything else. They steering everyone towards using one step verification instead of regular password to sign-in!
