PS3 4.89 Update is Live! - Discussions / Details about the firmware update

Just to keep everyone posted.

HFW and HEN are both essentially ready, esc0 is testing thoroughly and is waiting for new icons for a new XMB entry.
There's also that rco issue that he is testing further.

Evilnat's CFW should be released in coming days afaik.
The PS3 Toolset and the pyPS3tools are also ready to deploy, patiently waiting for Nat's release.

No ETAs, please don't ask.

@esc0rtd3w @bguerville , I have pinged @xps3riments so he can help with the new icons. He should show up in the forum but if needed I can ping him on twitter /DMs.

He can help with the icons for sure :)

You guys are awesome and the turn around is so damn quick, but people need to be patient, I'm sure we would much like a polished version than a release that will have major bugs.

The same people that moan at actual game devs about releasing their stuff now, and they do and then complain about bugs you cannot have it both ways, ID rather them take the time, and we get a much better polished version.

Have some popcorn

Very likely.. Someone would need to investigate.
ah i saw this happen to my ps3 yesterday, it seems to fail to connect to psn but only when im connected to wifi, not sure why this is suddenly happening but noticed it happening to others as well, when i connect via ethernet everything works fine, i have update to v4.89 yet but i assume this is because of the changes sony made to psn?

Absolutely spot on.

Sony
official update v4.89 is live!

  • 4.89 Firmware Official Changelog:
    • Signing in to PlayStation Network now requires a device setup password for enhanced account protection.
    • Account creation for PlayStation network and some account management features are no longer available on the console. Use your PC or Mobile browser to use account management features with improved performance, speed, and safety.

    Compiled date:
    • 2022-02-04

    Important Notes:
    • ❎Bgtoolset by @bguerville is not yet compatible with FW 4.89, so there is no patch for those who update it and want to go back to CFW on compatible models.
    • ✅ HFW (Hybrid Firmware) is not available yet, please be patient.
    • ❎ CFW (Custom Firmware) is not yet available, it may take a few weeks, but @Evilnat (yeap, he is alive, we were worried about him too) via his twitter reported that he will be working on it.
    • ❎ HEN is not available yet, it will be eventually released after the HFW.

  • Homebrews Updates:
Backup managers often need an update after a new FW version is released, at least to identify the current firmware version correctly.

  • Warning for CFW users:
    Don't update it YET
DO NOT use any spoofing method until it is confirmed that the PSN authentication method has not been changed.

    Custom Firmware:
    • 4.89 Evilnat (Cobra 8.3) CFW (CEX)
    • BGtoolset will need an update to support 4.89 firmware for CFW capable PS3 models to jailbreak IF you do not have a CFW installed already.

    PS3HEN
    • PS3HEN will need updated to support the new frmware
    • HFW will need a proper update. (A HFW PUP was released by @louray but it had an issue and was removed. A new solution is being developed.)
