4.93 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5)

PS3 4.93 Evilnat w/ Cobra v8.5 - (CEX/PEX/D-PEX) 4.93

Hi all, is it possible to get a beta version of cfw evilnat somehow as I like to test... thanks
I'm really not sure whether Evilnat allows sharing his beta versions without his explicit consent so I can't link to it, unfortunately.
You can try messaging Evilnat, he sometimes shows up here on the forum. You should probably tell him whether there's any specific functionality you want to test that isn't available on 4.90.

of course I understand that sharing must be agreed by Evilnat. I have several models and a Hardware flasher.
I don't know the functions present in the beta so I'm not aiming for anything in particular but I like to test and discover.

I think the only major feature is the ability to run DEX OFW on converted units without bricking them.

Both are a little too small. You need at least 20GB as a hard drive and i would personally go with an HDD since the PS3 was never meant to house an SSD and you can get weird glitches.

SSDs are fine as long as they support the trim function, and virtually all new ones do (maybe except white label Chinese crap). Just mind that 1TB is the maximum supported size. Anything above that (whether SSD or HDD) will cause issues or might not even work at all.
I'm not sure about the minimum size. 20GB was indeed the smallest HDD size that a PS3 shipped with (the CECHB specifically) but there's no way that would work these days. Even just installing game updates for a couple of games can take you above 20GB and you can pretty much forget about digital downloads and/or playing ISOs from the internal disk.

You still need the OS to give TRIM commands to the SSD, otherwise the write speed goes to crap which can lead to issues with the cache partition. Im talking from personal experience here. I used an 870 Evo 1TB for a while and i had weird shutter issues in some newer games that used caching extensively after a while. Or that some PS2 games just wouldn't start.
I changed to an SSHD later and those problems went away.

That depends on the specific SSD you use. Certain newer SSDs don't require the TRIM command because they do it by themselves even without being explicitly requested. Sounds weird that the Samsung EVO doesn't do that though. There are a few threads about compatible SSD models.

can someone tell me how install xai_plugin on my ps3 please

xai_plugin is part of CFW 4.90 Evilnat. The plugin is used in conjunction with Custom Firmware Tools menu (XMLs),
Some options require features added to Cobra 8.4.

So if you want to use xai_plugin you only need to install CFW 4.90 Evilnat and everything is ready to use it out of the box.

ps3xploit includes it's own version of xai_plugin specially tailored for HEN.

Older custom firmwares like Rebug 4.84.2 require an updated stage2 (Cobra payload) and customization of some XMB files (XMLs) to use the latest features in Evilnat's xai_plugin.

By the way, there are various versions of xai_plugin out there. The reason of this is that xai_plugin is a system plugin not longer used by recent versions of OFW. However it's still whitelisted to be used from XMB or in-game XMB. Therefore the homebrew developers use this plugin to add functions that can be called from XMB through custom XML menus. Another system plugin used by homebrew developers for similar purposed is videodownloader_plugin.sprx

Quick question, what happens if you swap kernels in CEX mode?

Asking instead of just trying it to see because I want to make sure this won't brick your console.
