PS2 Any tips on getting the PS2 to look better on modern TVs?

Currently Using component cables on a 32" tv

Remember that the PS2 was released for cathode tube televisions, do not expect "magic" in the images, even so you can still use GSM to improve the image a little more.

Edit: I also recommend playing at a 4:3 aspect ratio except for games that have a native 16:9 aspect ratio.

buy CRT tv :D

hardware integer upscaling will make picture super pixely, because of low resolution of PS2.

Hw upscallers making image real. On CRT screen is a little blurry due to how they works and due to interlacing. Excluding few specific games examples which using some CRT tricks, image from nearest neighbour will always be far far more better than from bilinear etc. algos used by default, without any control in TV firmwares.

I never understand people which prefer blurry shit, some marketeers even using that for false advertising (like it was i.e in case of Heroes of Might & Magic III "HD" Remaster). And what is worst, majority of people from current generations thinking that old games looks so blurry on CRTs like on upscalled by FullHD/4K TVs are.

Bluriness due to composite signal or digital upscaling? Nearest neighbor on ps1 and lower gen is too sharp, because how low native res. is.

Nobody upscales video with nearest neighbor, integer or any similar, due to pixely nature of upscaling methods.

PS1 comparison in duckstation, native ps1 res.

Due to the way pixels work on LCD , you'll get the best quality when your TV resolution matches the source .There are some early LCDs which have a resolution of 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 and also have component inputs . A workaround for current TVs would be to display the game windowed at the native resolution ( GSM / OPL could be able to do this ) . Or just get a TV with PIP and display the PS2 in a window .

Resolution doesn't need to match original one. It must covering multiplied original with AR control, and that's why upscallers was invented, because TV does not using nearest neighbour so they doing it.

Just get a Partial emulation BC PS3, as long as the game is compatible. I was shocked how good it looks on a flatscreen. If you want to use PS2 I would suggest a CRT in that case. I think the smoothing filter is amazing for what it does. In addition, there are some cool hacks for PS3 such as Widescreen hacks and 480p hacks that I suggest to use.

I tried to play NFS Most Wanted with OSSC and it worked great (and I could add horizontal+vertical scanlines).
I also tested the same game in my LED TV using component cable and the visuals were not bad.

Some games look better with some level of blur to hide some of the ugly pixels.
In that case, try:

a not too big TV (about 30 inches or less),
with either a:
RGB SCART,
S-Video,
or RCA composite cable (of higher quality).
Lower quality RCA composite cables might look too ugly.

Other games look fine with the higher sharpness of component or component to HDMI.
PS1 games may not display though, if your TV or monitor does not display the PS1 240p
resolution without some kind of upscaling (GSM in OPL?).

Although it looks good, I avoid CRT TVs because of the cons like power consumption and radiation.

PC emulation of PS2 games is another option, if your computer is fast enough.

I don't know of any upscalers that are relatively cheap, low input lag and fullscreen without noitceable black bars.

Ps Vita has plugin to display the game at the internal resolution. Some games such as Mortal Kombat are displayed in a window, but every pixel is 1:1 . I wish we could do this on PS2, it would help with the clarity .

Is there a way to get a less blurry picture on a modern tv
Oh well I highly recommend the Retrotink 5x-

without using hdmi converters?
oh

You already got component but specifically what cables do you have? I used some generic cables in the past but had miserable ghosting/ visual artifacts with them. It wasn't until I got some high quality HD Retrovision cables did the problems go away.
