The word you're getting out there is respectable @STLcardsWS, appreciate what you do. Unfortunately there will be many who will dig their feet in further and justify clone use of the Toolset, claiming it's safe because it worked for them.

Some people will be receptive, such as the person who originally mirrored it on GitHub taking it down, others will be less than respectable about it. It's a lot of "well it worked fine for me" that I'm seeing, but of course that's not an accurate measure of safety.

Different scene, but I've seen about the same in regards to RGH3 for the Xbox 360. You have the developers and testers stating it's unstable on Phat consoles, could be problematic, not recommended, etc. These are the people who know RGH3 in and out and THOROUGHLY tested it, so their word is good. However on the opposite end there's many people who doubt the devs there, saying it isn't unstable for Phat units and is perfectly fine because "I did it on 5 systems and it worked perfectly"

It transcends consoles, generations, and scenes it seems [emoji28]

You should see the "so called" reputable people on Facebook, but I'm not able to get anywhere because of this.

I can't speak for @lmn7. But I'm almost done rewriting the GUI portion of HEN Flash Patcher, and then there are some feature requests to do. I don't really want to release it publicly without testing after that, so it isn't misused by less knowledgeable users. But seeing how hard it is to find testers with hardware flashers, I will probably send links over PMs to anyone who is both experienced and interested.

You are 100% right, i'm not gonna use something that's not well documented on github or just a download without a source, if someone else updates the flash dumper and writer from the PS3Xploit github before the original author does they atleast should make a pull request or create a fork.

I would not worry about getting quality trusted tester's..
I think if its ready for that and there is a call of need, the right people will rise up and offer to test.
To be honest i have never seen Imn7's request, I have heard he trouble finding tester's but i never seen his request.
So my point to that would be not everyone see's request and i am sure if there was a thread asking for Senior Member's / Developer's of the scene with flasher to test something. You will find plenty of trusted names.

Also a suggestion with BETA's this is to any developer really. Make some visual changes (color or something) in the UI so first glance ohh this is the Beta or development version (maybe even text in there saying as such). Just a small thing to think about it.. Might be a good idea or maybe not for some projects. .

The ps3xploit.me which is listed in the 2nd post seems to return NXDOMAIN so no server ip is assigned to the domain.

I found out one older way to install CFW, which is safe, but requires OFW 4.84.

Basically going from 4.84 OFW to HFW and then using local hosted version of the ps3xploit to change the flash flag, at which point pendrive can be used with evilnat 4.89 CFW to directly flash to 4.89 and go CFW at the same time.

I've seen this video, which had working mega links to mirrors just a couple of weeks/months ago, to a copy of Flash Writer bundled with miniserver, but Mega links are now down due to "gross violation of ToS", that's odd, considering the recent bgtoolset events.

You'd simply copy the files anywhere with the provided miniserver, then connect to the PC local IP to open the Flash Writer using PS3's built in browser and switch it there.

I see there's a repo for 4.85 HFW, so I think for anybody on 4.85 OFW and below, this should be the current recommended way, by self-hosting the flash-writer on PC and connecting to it from PS3 Browser, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

To be honest, I never expected that there are people financially motivated to steal/abuse/resell software for piracy. But I guess it makes sense considering how projects like these are monetized in poor countries. Where I live, it's basically that kids either do the minimal effort possible to pirate it, or they just go and buy it.

Anyway, yes, I already thought about adding some timebombs, to limit its lifespan. At least for the first couple of versions. Warnings regarding it being untested and risky to use are already in place.

But I also hope most of the "console breaking" bugs will be ironed out before it reaches less experienced users. What plays into my hands is the fact that PS3HEN does most of the "dirty work" for me, meaning the risk of a failure is concentrated on the process of writing the patch itself. No reason to worry about bugs in exploit chains and so on.

Statistically speaking, MEGA has so many rules that getting banned for DMCA takedowns is rather unlikely. Especially if that person had a free account that generated so much traffic to get flagged as "potentially used for business purposes". We can't blame MEGA for wanting to make money selling business plans.

It would be great if we could ask the uploader for the real reason, though.
