PS3 Can't install HFW (No Applicable update data was found)

Hello.

I have a FAT model PS3 which is currently on OFW 8.43 and has never had any CFW on it. I'm trying to install HFW from a USB stick, but when I try to update the firmware, I receive the error "No Applicable update data was found".

The USB stick is formatted as FAT32. The stick is empty except for \PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP
The md5 of the update file on the usb has been verified.

I'm using the right-most (closest to BD) USB port on the PS3.

Can you guys think of anything else to check for? Is it possible that the usb stick is somehow incompatible with the ps3? Is it possibly some obscure setting of the fat32 format?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In some cases, you will need an old USB thumb stick that's FAT16 formatted.

1- Ensure your stick is seen by the console by looking in the photo or music section. You should see it.
2- Update via the recovery menu. Ensure to use a retail DS3 joypad, fully charged.
3- If it doesn't work, unplug your joypad from the console right after you started the update (after the start+select screen)

Thanks a lot to those who replied. I figured out the issue. I had a partition on my USB stick, which is apparently unusual and not supported. So I just removed the partition and formatted the whole stick as FAT32.

While I'm at it, thanks so much to the ps3Xploit team and the whole scene in general! This site has been an amazing resource!

I'm having the same issue I've tried all options previously stated I'm trying to do HFW on a cech-3001A 4.84OFW

Check if your USB stick is MBR, and FAT32 format. If you are already on 4.84, you must install HFW from recovery.

Yeah man it's fat32 and I tried safe mode but still nothing I just recently did a cfw rebug job on a 2001a but I wanted to start learning these 3xxx and 4xxx but I'm going to try again and what does mbr stand for

I remembered an old trick i used when getting the same error installing hfw on my 2001a before cfw and it was everyone was saying PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP but i remember it wouldnt work on my 2001a either so i tried PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT and boom it worked on my 3001a hfw/hen and my 2001a/cfw might not work for all but it worked on two different models with no problem

You are truly a blessing. I was stuck here for 2 days till I came across this thread. Pure genius.

i did all of that, but for some reason when it starts to update it goes to 25% then jumps to 100% and just restarts like a regular ps3 like nothing is installed, and when i go to system information the version is 4.87 i don't understand

if it didn't give an error code, then it probably worked. the system information will only show "4.87". it will not show "4.87 HFW" or anything like that. there only way to know for sure if you are on OFW or HFW is to try to use HEN. if it fails and says "NaN", then you are still on OFW.

try unplugging the controller right after starting the search. leave it unplugged until search is finished.

Hi everyone, i know i'm few years late on this thread, but i have similar problem.
My PS3 slim CECH-2500 can't install firmware also. Same message appears. Firmware version is 3.40. The difference is, i don't know if it was jailbroken or not, i bought it like that cheap ( someone tried to install firmware and gave up). I didn't try installing CFW, only OFW and HFW, because i don't know what firmware was installed before. When you power console it asks for firmware because someone already did hdd format.

I forgot to mention i tried:
- Different versions of OFW and HFW firmware
- formatting USB drive to FAT16 instead of FAT32
- trying different USB drive, and different port on console
- trying to unplug controller while searching for update file on USB drive
- swapping different HDD drives and formatting them to FAT32 ( all were healthy, only the one that came with console had 34% health so i swapped it for 500gb and later 80 and 40 for testing)

My question is, do i need to do flashing in order to install CFW on 3.40 firmware?
