Hello i recently got from a friend a phat ps3 model cechj03 it has the firmware version 3.73 and according to the tool it can got all the way back to 2.16.
My question is. What is the best way to install cfw on it and a way that I don't need expensive equipment to chip it.

Ok first grab 3.55 OFW then install that. Not above or you can't hack it ATM. The systems tend to be iffy going below 3.55 as I have 3-4 systems and only 1 went straight from 2.00 to the latest CFW. It has been 100% going from 3.55 to any CFW. I will recommend EvilNat 4.89.3 CEX and once you get familiar you can switch the DEX/PEX if you wanna develop software.

Can I just downgrade from 3.73 to 3.55 just like that? Or do I need a special procedure? Can you direct me to a good guide with links to do that?
 
Of course not... Only OFW 3.55 and below can install CFW from USB just like that. And You cannot downgrade on CEX OFW.

For You, the only way which left is jump into 4.82 OFW and use ps3exploit for patching fw. After that, You will be able to install CFW from USB.

When/if bgtoolset become online again, there will be newest fw coverage but for now, only fake bgtoolsets are online which randomly bricking and stealing sata. So stay away from this shit and idiots who recommending them.

@AntreasMrBig Installing 4.85 HFW is still a possibility for you as a route to CFW; using @lmn7's unofficial update to the Flash Writer (the previous software method for hacking CFW compatible PS3s) - see this thread for more information. The link to download 4.85 HFW is within the thread. HFW is essentially OFW but contains the exploitable file(s) from OFW 4.82 needed in order to perform the flash patch operation (NOR in your case with a CECHJ03 fat model). It installs on unmodded PS3s via USB the same as any other OFW PUP would.

You're welcome. Just be sure not to update beyond 4.85 or you will not be able to use this method. OFW 4.85 and HFW 4.85.1 are treated the same by the system so the HFW is not actually a higher firmware version than the OFW.

I have one question though because the mirror you gave me is only the tool download. How do i use is it after i install the HFW4.85.1?

I believe you will need to host a local web server with the files from the extracted .zip hosted on it in the same place, with the web browser home page set to index.html - I am a little foggy on the details as it's been about 5 years since I used the Flash Writer method on my PS3. The .htaccess file is present to ensure flash485.P3T can be accessed on the web server, as mentioned in that thread.

Again I'm a little hazy on the details but it is quite straight forward, but I'd recommend you hold fire for now until others can possibly offer their input as well.

ill follow an old mrmario tutorial with self hostilg files . but ill wait a bit more untill i get more input. for now i did the safe and just install the hfw4.85.1
 
Good idea, MrMario has good tutorials for PS3 hacking. In the meantime, you could lurk from this point in this thread from earlier today where TDM666 is asking aldostools about the same thing, to see what gets posted in response. Best to hold off until you're 100% confident in what you're doing, you're on the right firmware now so you're not far from your goal but no sense rushing in to it either which is responsible of you :)
 
I am sorry I misread thought it was 2.73 firmware. My bad I apologize for the confusion. Meant to check sooner but my new job has been taking up 98% of my day that isn't spent sleeping.
 
so far what i did is install the hfw4.85.1 (btw it just says 4.85 in the system information) and tried to run the Unofficial 4.85 Flash Writer from a local host i did but it fails to finish (i assume im doing something wrong here)

I took the flash writer and host it on my pc as an http server with RebexTinyWebServer (super simple just copy paste files in app folder).
clear everything from browser and run it . i skipped the dump process because i was inpatient but i dont recommend it and then i installed cfw 4.89.3 evilnat.

@AntreasMrBig thanks for posting about RebexTinyWebServer as that worked for me when it came time to flash the system. The other webserver kept failing at the start of the flashing process and wouldn't allow the download to begin
