CFW 4.89.3 Evilnat Cobra (8.4) (CEX/DEX/PEX)

PS3 CFW 4.89.3 Evilnat Cobra (8.4) (CEX/DEX/PEX) -

I have checked CoreOS and XMB layout, the last one doesn't look like they fixed it... :(

LV2 kernel is completely different from previous versions. I have not verified anything else, I will continue
I wonder how fast it will take to release a cfw for 4.9 lol
and what new features will it have if possible

DVD movies are loaded in different XMB column than games. They are labelled accordingly too. I assume illiteracy is a thing of the past.

I guess the purpose is to keep consistency on the icons for PS2 games.

For me it is a bit weird to have icons with semi-random colors (blue if it is a PS2CD, golden if it is a PS2DVD).

Normally the user doesn't know if the media is a CD or DVD. They only know that it is a PS2 game.

I mean it's not really random even though i understand the reason. PS2 games on CDs are actually blue and PS2 games on DVDs look like normal DVDs.

The icons do reflect the bottom surface of discs. So it is not semi-random at all, but consistent and logical.

It is not the only choice I do not understand at all. The next one is renamed "/app_home/PS3_GAME" mount point to the meaningless "PlayStation 3". Not to mention the swapped animated swirl icon with the static one (the XMB File Browser is useless after all). I mean, @Evilnat is doing an amazing job with maintaining and developing the CFW. But these small cosmetic changes make the firmware look unpolished and rough around the edges. It feels like adding a new feature just for the sake of adding a new feature.

You have to disable the syscalls, but it's still not recommended to do so, connecting to PSN that is.

I know, but after doing that, I'll be asked to install the latest OFW, and if I don't agree with it, I won't be able to access PSN. If I agree, it'll install OFW and I'll lose OFW.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping that $ony made improvements to the ps2_gxemu emulator with this update:biggrin2::grin:
i dont think sony has touched any of the PS2 Emu's since 2014 at the latest, theres really no reason to, and sony wont add any game fixes or emu adjustments for COK-002 boards as they are obsolete now

Most of the PS3 systems are Slims and Super slims, we do not have support for PS2 discs, so it makes sense to keep only one color for the discs as we will be using ISOs.

So it's easy to spot:
Light blue disc = PS3 game
Dark blue disc = PS2 game
Black disc = PS1 game
Golden disc = DVD/Data

About the XMB file explorer, it's useful for a lot of things, eg: delete files without a homebrew or another device to have ftp access, delete boot_plugins, boot_init and other scripts and etc.

And the app_home has been renamed because most of people think it's ugly and doesn't fit the XMB layout.

With Evilnat 4.89.3 Cobra 8.4 [PEX] [CEX] installed, I'm having some issues:

1 - As soon as I click "Enable FTP" in "Cobra Tools" with an USB device attached to the PS3, the latter freezes (I tested this in another PS3 Slim and a friend of mine also did it in his PS3 Slim and we're having this problem too);

2 - The PS3 often freezes/beeps thrice and restarts when returning to XMB after having transferred files with FileZilla or WinSCP to the PS3;

3 - If I delete a FileZilla or WinSCP FTP transfer to the PS3 while IRISMAN is running and the transfer is being made, the following FTP transfers start very slowly (like under 1 MiB/s instead of 21 something MiB/s) and take time to reach the right speed (21 something MiB/s);

4 - If I leave FileZilla or WinSCP connected to the PS3 for some time, I can't reconnect to it until I close FileZilla or WinSCP and run one of them again.

I reinstalled FileZilla, Evilnat 4.89.3 Cobra 8.4 [PEX] [CEX] and IRISMAN, used the Restore File System and Rebuild Database settings from the Recovery Menu and swapped the HDD for the previous one and for a new SSD (the FTP transfer speed went from 18 something MiB/s to 21 something MiB/s) and I still have these issues.

EDIT: If I close FileZilla or WinSCP after transferring files, I can go back to XMB from IRISMAN without the PS3 freezing.

EDIT 2: If I return to XMB from multiMAN and Rebug Toolbox after transferring files to the PS3 with FileZIlla or WinSCP, the PS3 doesn't freeze/beep thrice and restart, so maybe it's IRISMAN's fault (as well as the second issue). Also, the third issue happens if using multiMAN, Rebug Toolbox and Cobra's FTP too.

By "semi-random color" I mean that the user won't know what color to expect until the PS2 ISO is mounted.

As LuanTeles answered, it makes more sense to keep one color. But I understand your point that there is not much reason to change it now. In all decisions made we always will have 2 group of people: who approve & who disapprove.

The icon for "/app_home/PS3_GAME" has a lot of controversies: Most people find it useless and prefer it removed, while others find the name looks like garbage on screen. The label can be edited back easily in explore_plugin_full.rco

What a bullshit. The authentication does still matter, regardless of the optical disc support. Have you ever heard about the media check protection? Majority of games would fail to boot when the detected medium is wrong. Thanks to this change, we cannot see whether the mounted disc is a PS2CD-ROM or PS2DVD-ROM one. It is a matter of making a wrong image file.

The XMB file explorer is useless, because it is not intuitive. The XMB is not designed to have a lot of sub levels. I bet there is not even a 1% of users making use of this one actually.

And the app_home has been renamed because most of people think it's ugly and doesn't fit the XMB layout.
So is the "PlayStation 3" not ugly at all and does it fit the XMB layout beautifully instead?

Can you test it on Rebug 4.84.2 REX/D-REX?
Sorry for the late update, just saw it today.

I updated to Rebug 4.84.2 REX by using Safe Mode, just to be safe and sadly PS2 games are not booting.
I'm starting to think maybe it's on the hardware side and not CFW, not sure if going back to OFW will help any.

Do you want a hug or something? it's hard to believe that those things actually hurts your experience so I guess that your feelings are hurt for trying to get used to something new.

How can one enable syscalls after disabling them without restarting the PS3? After clicking "Disable Syscalls" and "Create Syscalls" afterwards, it's stated on the upper right corner of the screen: "Unable to create syscalls". On Evilnat 4.89 I was able to recover syscalls without rebooting the PS3 but I'm not in Evilnat 4.89.3.

Is it always needed to activate the PS3 on the PSN before installing PKG files and converting the concerning RAP files to RIF and copy the concerning EDAT files to "/dev_hdd0/home/000000XX/exdata" even if playing that content afterwards signed out from the PSN?

And after being signed in to PSN and installing content purchased there, will it only be accessible when signed in to the PSN?

IIRC, I can play downloaded games from PSN signed out from the PSN.

EDIT: Does Cobra on Evilnat 4.89.3 automatically convert "/dev_hdd0/exdata" RAP files to RIF and make "/dev_hdd0/home/000000XX/exdata" EDAT files work right after these files are transferred or does one have to wait some time or even run the concerning game, and if the latter, what if one exits it right after running it instead of waiting until it reaches the menu (for instance)?

You had a chance to express your opinion on the subject, but you chose to make childish personal remarks instead. If you do not have anything meaningful to say next time, just keep your mouth shut.

You could just make your own CFW instead of coming in so hot. Some people will like the changes, some will not, most will not use terms like "What a bullshit" which is a pretty "childish personal remark". Your subjective opinion is not the de facto correct opinion. I'm subjectively fine with both of these changes and subjectively prefer "the meaningless "PlayStation 3"" change.
