PS4 Dualshock 4 not holding charge

What the title says. The orange light glows but the battery isn't charging, although it's a bit hot if I touch it. Is the battery dead or is there anything I can try? Maybe it's something else? I don't wan't to buy a new battery if maybe the problem is somewhere else.

Thanks in advance.

You can try to dismount the joystick then unplug and re-plug the battery, if not working should be there a reset button into the joystick on the chip board, keep hold the reset button few seconds then unplug and re-plug the battery, this is all that one that you can do to fix it.

Would the reset button work if the controller is completely discharged?

Try this way: plug-in the joystick to your ps4 (switched on obviously) and press and keep hold for few seconds the reset button (by the way in the ps4 controller the reset button is located to back side near to L2 button), after that unplug the controller from your ps4 and unplug and replug the battery, if this isn't working then you should try to replace the battery then, however here some links about this issue and about to replace the battery:

Other thing I've noticed it, is that, although when connected to the PS4 the controller works, the speaker does not, it makes no sound. Could it be related to the low charge? Or the fact is connected by cable? Or maybe this indicates the battery issue may have caused other issues?

I don't think so, if connected to the ps4 through cable the controller is working with usb power so low battery charge/dead battery should have nothing to do with speaker sound not working since you're using usb power and not the battery, speaker sound not working seems more like related to a controller issue, however check if ps4 settings about the speaker are correct, and if the game supports speaker feature, and after this if all ok then is an issue with the controller that you can try to fix resetting the controller through the reset button, but in my opinion after tried the controller reset if not working the next step should be replace the battery so you can see if the controller is working properly or has some issue instead.

So, I tried with a different battery and the results were the same. Actually, my battery works fine on other controller. The speaker works. But I think my controller is beyond repairing. The issue is that the controller thinks it's charging all the time, even when not connected, and when connected it's actually not charging. From what I could find on the net (very little info about this actually) this can happen if a fast charger is used, and I used one, although the first time it didn't happen to me.

Makes sense? What do you guys think of it?

Ok so now you got that your controller has an issue, did you tried to use again fast charger? if no try then and see what happens using fast charger.

Exchange these parts of controller with another working controller in the order of simplest first to see what's the actual problem.
1. Charging cable
2. Battery
3. Ribbon cable witch connects lower part of controller to its motherboard. Take care it's fragile.
4. The daughter board of usb input port located on lower part of controller.

You mentioned heat. I afraid it is the charging controller ic on the motherboard. If so it's better to get a new controller

1 - I tried different cables.
2 - I tried other battery, same problem. My battery on other controller -> good.
3 - I tried with the ribbon disconnected, the controller still reported as charging, and not charging from EXT port.
4 - You mean the micro usb port on the top? If that's the case, I don't have a spare to try, but since I tried with that component removed...

You could try a last test, unplug ribbon cable from "motherboard" and plugin in the "motherboard" of the other working controller that you have, after it if the led is working properly and the controller is charghing correctly means that's "motherboard" damaged.

Ribbon cable:

Yes, that's actually the only test left I can think of, but the other controller hasn't the same led board, JDS-040 vs JDS-055 and I think they are not compatible with the other controller's main board :(

More info: I literally disconnected all possible boards, leaving only one battery and the main board, and the problems was still there. So by now my goal is to find a replacement board. I've located a second-hand one, I hope it works OK, I think it's the only thing I can do now.

I had this problem in mine in my case it was a small smd capacitor that had shorted. Replaced it and it worked fine.
