PS3 Hacking the Singstar DLC encryption for backup/custom songs?

@Bolonni Your post was removed as you admitted to downloading the .pkg game from a known piracy site. See the Site/Forum Rules & Guidelines and note that we do not discuss piracy on the forum. Please do not discuss piracy in any form in future. Thank you.

Hmm, sorry about that, I didn't know that site was a piracy one. As I said, the game was free, not free as in "I found it for free on the Internet" but as in "Sony gave the game away for free", so I didn't suspect anything. I made a mistake in any case, that was not the site but one that had the official PKGs from Sony (zeus.dl.playstation.net), can't remember the names as I've gone through a million pages already.

Sony doesn't secured servers with content. They used direct links for some reason, so we are able to download it i.e on PC. But it doesn't means it is free game. ;)

wikipedia says that one of the games was made free to play via a new icon on a system update. that game would play ps2 + ps3 disc-based songs. i do not remember that icon on OFW recently. if you got the game from that icon back then, then you technically have a license i suppose. but if you did not get it that way at that time, then you might not have legal claim to a copy of the game.

@AlexRhine i deleted your post. no big deal but i will just say this about "is it stealing to take a dvd when you do not have a dvd player? yes it is stealing."

Ok, I'm really not knowledgeable enough to discuss this, but I'd say that this particular game was always free, for everybody. It's the game you cannot remove from your PS3 and things like HEN have a switch to be able to remove it, etc :).

@Coro you say the game is not part of the new firmwares? I just updated to 4.88 and the game was still there, but I guess that makes sense.

Also, one of those sites said the license (which I think captures from the PKG header or something) was "Free (no RAP)" or something, but again, not really sure of what that means :).

No problem, I understand. Anyway, I assumed it was a 50/50 shot at my post getting deleted. I guess that's a discussion meant for another place/time.

okay, but if it is still there why do you nees to download it from pirate site? if it is free, then it is free; but when you mention a site like that one, we can only assume...

the main is issue is don't mention/link those sites. that is why we have a word filter to mask them.

can't you people buy your own games? I just bought these four on the switch earlier today:

this is why I'm glad that I'm done after the ps4 scene, and even then, I probably won't help much with the scene anymore. I've been researching backports for over six months, and most people can't even backup a single game or content.

Here's some info about that: https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/NPDRM_Selfs#License_Type
I think there was a more detailed page in the wiki, but I haven't been able to find it.

I just downloaded it because convenience, and because I only have a single version / region, but when doing this kind of analysis is always really useful getting your hands on as many binaries as possible.

Anyway, I'll keep all of this to myself for now, as I'm not really sure how far I can go discussing this thing here (yeah, I've read the rules, still a bit overwhelming )

The Singstar icon the XMB was a xil download shortcut like the Spotify link, it only showed up in some regions like UK and some others but not in the US. It was completely free, they removed the shortcut from the XMB in more recent FW but if you had the app installed it will still show, it was just the shortcut for downloading the app that was removed.

As its free IMO its just like any other free app like Netflix, I do not think there is any piracy issue there really.

yeah, if you read the whole thread there is probably someone saying the same thing (unless some posts got deleted). on these games it is harder to tell because of the songs.

that's the grey area. if it is not being distributed now, it may not no longer qualify as "free" for everyone according to some laws. just to the people who already had it. i wonder if it is available in the store from those areas right now for free?

IDK if that's a grey area, if it is then so is any PUP except 4.88 OFW as Sony are not offering those for free download either, or any app like Netflix except the latest versions.

Technically even every system file like xmls and rcos are Sonys property too, but I think the rules here allow for stuff like that because they were all distributed for free when they were available and no one is losing money by sharing them now.

yeah. the pups where included on discs (except recent) so most are "still available" IMO. 4.88 is downloadable now so it is fine. i'm not gonna complain about any in between and neither does sony AFAIK. main issue is just mentioning the sites like that. really would not bother me except for the raps.

Yeah, the mentioning of dodgy sites that also have 100% dodgy content is definitely an issue, but I do not think posting the official Sony link to the Singstar pkg should be a problem.

Not that you need my permission or anything :) but feel free to remove the link from my post to be safe if you want, no worries.

Are the pups in game discs really OFW updates? There's a site which backs up old OFW (I won't post it just in case) that claims that they are really web updates padded with null bytes. Is this right? I've never needed to look into it so I don't know much about it.

Yeah they are the same updates as the ones originally distributed directly to the console and available to download on the playstation site, except for some reason the ones on disc are padded out to 256MB. No idea why really. Once installed there is no difference.

The Singstar Online app was just an free to download app that had nothing else with it and was useless until you bought songs from the Singstar Store using the Singstar Online app. This was a last ditch effort by Sony to get more people interested in the game. If I remember correctly the last update for all of the Singstar games basically downloaded Singstar Online when inserting a PS3 Singstar disc into the PS3. I guess what I am trying to say is that if you have an original Singstar PS3 disc all you need to do is insert disc and then check for update and you will have the Singstar Online app installed as the last update.
