Hello. I am a human... not a robot and definitely not a giraffe. (at least not on Mondays)

I am new to the emu- scene (please be gentle) and after getting a jailbroken ps3 I am ready to rock. I bought a legit ps3 back in the day and it broke down in 2 years. I have quite a few games downloaded for psn and was wondering if it would be risky to download these titles again for my new jailbroken ps3.

The other problem I am having is that I am having issues understanding the common threadwork of the programs and what they do.

How do I transfer games? What file types do these emulation programs take? (Nestopia and Genesis plus among others. ) I Can I burn a ps3 game to the hard drive directly or do I need the rom or whatever? also am curious... No, there is too much. Too many questions. lol

Thanks and hope to see you guys around!

Hello and welcome to PSX-Place

There could be a risk of re-downloading your games from PSN if your on CFW. However it may be a low risk, but that is only opinion and ANY opinion regarding PSN bans take with a grain of salt because no one will honestly know 100% the methods sony uses. So the approach some developer's have taken it make your PS3 look like its an OFW by disabling temporary (until next boot) various CFW patches, this will be known as "disbaling CFW syscalls" that will help reduce a chance of a PSN ban...

However to be 100% safe you could just update to 4.82 OFW (login to PSN and download your games) when done, then there is a current exploit for 4.82 (called PS3Xploit v2.0 is for consoles that are CFW compatible, v3.0 is HAN which is not nearly as powerful as CFW and for newer PS3's that can not install CFW)

FTP you can transfer games on and off your Internal HDD and/or an External HDD via USB.
Various Homebrew Manager's will allow you to back up your physcial disc to your hard drive. Ever have a damaged disc this can be a useful feature to have. \

Retro Emulation, the file types will depend on the emulator .
RetroArch is the best all in one emulator. It has many cores (emulators)

Once your on CFW,
Just install some managers
multiMAN
IRISMAN
ManaGunZ

try them out and see what you like best, really only need one but they all offer unique features and have tons of features within the apps. Start to get familiar with those that will help your adventures as they can do so many things.

Then there is background loading plugins but i would save that for later after you have a better understanding. Just install various homebrew and play and ask questions in the forum. We have many great ps3 minds here..

Eh starting to think it were a mistake coming here. .

No mistake in coming here :) .

Unfortunately the lingo has me a bit confused. The problem I am running into is that when the psn downloads reach 100 percent it sends the files back to psn and the files don't show up under games menu. Pretty co fusing but I am obviously missing some crucial criteria for making this work.

Go to Package Manager --> Playstation Network Content (or something like that). And install content again from this location. If there are no files to install there, then issue is somewhere else.
