I tried two different hard drives on my CFW fat PS3; can't read NTFS no matter what I do.

The only games that I keep on internal are in BD-ROM format (because these games have certain mods that only work if the game is inside the internal GAMES folder).
BD-ROM format? Not sure what that is, I guess you must mean folder rips or JB format, but those work off external FAT32 drives just the same as internal.

Folder rips can be converted to ISO and will work just the same or better really, does not matter if they are modded.

Unfortunately I got the drive you recommended but I am not given the option of "Windows XP Compatibility". I opened the program, clicked format, and it immediately began to format:

loXEM7D.png

It never asked me how I want to format it.

The file I downloaded is WD_Quick_Formatter_2.0.0.65.zip

Is that version correct? Any ideas why I am not given the "Windows XP Compatibility" option in the program?

edit: I figured it out. The program has to be running in Windows 7 compatibility. Not XP, or 10!

Now to see if this works on my PS3!

By the way should I re-join my ISOs now that I am using NTFS? Or is leaving them split OK?

wd elements is a good choice. I've used their 3.5" as well as their 2.5" version of the same model. I still use a wd elements with my wii u. it's never given me a problem.

Ah, you are right... It has been a long while since I played one but I had to go back and check just now.

So yes, then I guess my copies of GTAV, Black Ops 2 and Fallout New Vegas work from external.

Still doesn't change the fact that all of the data for the mods & DLC goes into the "game" folder.

Otherwise, I have not found any way to make the DLC/mods "be one with the ISO" and save 25GB of internal space.

Also my copy of GTA5 uses the KMZ PS3_EXTRA that has it's own category on internal in "game"

No, I wasn't trying to bash WD Formatter... just that OP has been mixing answers to get results

(Instead of following one post at a time, using multiple diff. tools and methods in unison, rather than following 1 whole post exactly.)

It doesn't matter who can answer it, I'm just starting to wonder when the grand answer will finally be acheived.

Oh ok. :biggrin2: Yea that was my first real post here was about the best option for an external HDD. I wanted to get that simple, and universal answer finally solved too. I think the @DaddyLongLegs is really close to solving it as well. I can understand though having a drive and trying anything and everything first before making a new purchase, and to be fair I was a little late to the conversation with my 2 cents.

I guess I use FAT32 because it plays my 52 PS3ISOs, 76 PS2ISOs and 300+ PSXISOs just fine... Plus more.

I can see that. There are many ways to configure a setup based on needs and preference. I have a 1tb internal and mostly use it for about 22 PS3 PKG games, DLC, Game updates (of course), and saves with about 550GB left. If I ever get to older PlayStation stuff I think there would be enough room, but of course, that is not a solution for all.

Yes, game updates and DLC install to the internal. This is generally why people like to use an external for everything else that does not need to be on the internal.

With game mods, those can be applied to the disc image (folder rip or ISO) too, but it depends if you are modding the base game, or the update files, or the the game data that the disc installs.

Also my copy of GTA5 uses the KMZ PS3_EXTRA that has it's own category on internal in "game"
PS3_EXTRA can be ISO or folder rip, and can be on internal or external, no real difference there.

it may be possible with gamedata tool, but it requires a fat32 hdd. it remaps game to gamei on the external. there was something called like external game loader that you put on each hdd you wanted, external hdd, and it would map that sort of stuff to the external hdd iirc. I remember it having a special option in multiman. I don't know if it still works though, but you might try gamedata tool instead.

I was able to get a 4tb drive working and later a 5tb drive working. I ended up returning the 4tb to amazon and got the 5tb for a little more space after learning how it works. So I can confirm the options below work.

Model number: WDBU6Y0040BBK-WESN
Model number: WDBU6Y0050BBK-WESN
Formatted with WD Quick Formatter: https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16241

The WD Quick Formatting tool only gives two options to format. Windows XP compatibility or Vista and later. I selected Windows XP compatibility and ok. That is basically it. Really simple. The format is NTFS

I can confirm the drive does work with Multiman, Webman Mod, Irisman, and MagnaGunz as a game loader without having to use prep ISO. However, I wasn't able to browse the drive with Multiman file explorer on either drive. I heard this was because the bigger NTFS drives only work with iris-based managers for file exploring. MagnaGunz can browse the drive. It is slow but works, other managers may work too. I haven't tested. I haven't really needed to since it's for ISO games only.

I've been using a mixture of the following:
-fat32 32gb thumb drive (for small pkg games, raps, homebrew, icons, etc)
-1tb exfat drive (for big PKGs mounting with prep ISO and installing through WebmanMod Bluray menu)
-5tb drive exclusively for hosting ISO (mainly with WebmanMod)

The 1tb might not be necessary for the task and would probably work the same with the 5tb, although that's just what I had lying around, So I've been using it that way. It also works good with multiman file explorer.

I suggest using the 5tb drive for PS3 for ISO's. It really only gives you about 4.5tb of usable space. I estimate that would hold maybe 500 - 550 games (depending on the size of the games in the library). However, you may want different options for installing things and managing files like I mentioned above.

I don't know what 5tb drive you are using, but maybe try the WD quick formater? Or you could always get one of the drives I mentioned above.

So just a quick update, I bought the WDBU6Y0050BBK-WESN you recommended and I formatted it with the WD Formatter tool in XP mode.

I plugged the drive into my PS3 and loaded PrepISO but all I get is a black screen. I force rebooted and then MultiMan won't load with the drive attached.

I got the games to show up in WebManMod, but I can't really load any of them. Most of the time they don't even mount. If I get lucky enough to get a game to mount, the game will start but then get stuck at the initial loading screen.

So I am having no better luck with this drive that is supposed to be compatible than I had with my original 5tb drive.

I am using rebug 4.84. Could this be the culprit? Which CFW are you using with your setup?

I am all outta ideas here.

Yea you shouldn't be using prep iso it's not needed. It messes webman mod up for me. Try restarting the system. Then you may have to refresh webman mod and xmb. The games should show up. Once it's all set up they should load automatically each startup.

I'm using CFW 4.86.1 Rebug Lite [CEX] . I don't think the firmware is the issue though.

Also are you using PS1 ,PS2, or PS3 games?

You are probably not going to like it but my recommendation would be to use a disk <= 2Tb until devs bring ps3 large disk support in a comprehensive way.

For now disks above 2Tb are not supported officially & afaik no backup manager has been designed specifically to bring full support for them either.
Everything you are trying now is experimental, you are using a setup that is totally outside standard specifications.
Even if you did get this setup to work, it may work only with certain apps & not others, some features may work & not others.. Having said that, if others manage to get this particular disk to work (at least partially) you should be able to get the same results they did.

The good news is that we can bring large disk support to the ps3 in such a way that existing homebrews would support them.
The bad news is that afaik nobody is currently working on making it a reality.
The fact is that there is only a handful of active ps3 devs & all are already busy with other projects (and life!).

For comprehensive testing, I suggest you try your setup with Irisman & Managunz as well as webMAN-MOD & multiman.
For the kind of testing you are doing, I would probably favour sMan over webMAN-MOD. sMan is so much simpler in comparison that it's very straightforward to test with, there is no huge setting list to take into account, and at the core, what works for SMan should work on wMM.

Yea, I don't know why he's having issues. Mine works flawlessly on all the apps I mentioned with no bugs. I think he misread the post and used Prep ISO when I said not to. I missed replying by only 10 minutes. I wish he didn't disappear so we could troubleshoot it real quick and get it working.

I rebooted and it didn't make a difference.

Using the same drive you are using, I cannot get games to load in WebManMod or MultiMan. MultiMan will not even load with the drive attached. WebManMod finds the games fine, but will almost never mount them properly. Even if it does mount them properly (1 out of every 5 tries), when I try to start the game I will just get a black screen.

I am pulling my hair out over here. I even tried a second PS2 BC PS3 that I have. Same exact issues. Is there anything else I can try?

I am hoping that you figure it out, that's all I can say...

So you tried FAT32/MBR with 64kb clusters but I don't think you tried FAT32/MBR with 32kb clusters.

and if it really doesn't work in your PS3 after that, then sorry, I've failed you.

But you may as well keep trying anything & everything (except for buying more externals, just a waste of $$$ if it's not working)

and quite frankly, I do believe that any method posted by anyone here could work with any type of external or USB if done right.

It's all just a matter of your follow-through... and whether or not you are pleased with the end-result.

I'm not sure how to help you with this once a day. If you are following my post you need to follow the directions exactly. You mentioned you used Prep ISO, when you shouldn't have. You mentioned that you rebooted. Did you use prep iso again afterward or just reboot? You should not use it. Did you refresh Webmanmod as I said? I feel like you are not reading it through or rushing things. Can you please be a little more descriptive and thorough, if you want to get things working? It is hard to troubleshoot with you when you leave a message once a day saying, "I did it, it's not working" every single day.

You even said, "I even tried a second PS2 BC PS3 that I have." What does that even mean? If you are trying the wrong method on several systems it still won't work. In my original post, I said I recommend this for PS3 ISOs and asked what game you are trying to load. PS1, PS2, or PS3? I hope you are first testing with PS3 ISO like I originally recommended.

All I can do is give a step-by-step method. If you do anything else it probably won't work my way, and if you chose to listen to someone else you should do it 100% their way. If you are using several tips from different sources at once you won't get the results you want.

1. Reformat the drive again with WD formatting tool in Windows XP compatibility mode.
2. Place a folder in the root of the drive "PS3ISO" (Without Quotes)
3. Place 1 PS3 ISO into the folder (make sure it is not corrupt, split, or a bad file)
- (I make my ISO with PS3_ISO_TOOLS V2.2 - Settings: (CFW, 4.76, Exclude update, Rename ISO, use makps3.iso)
4.You can try installing CFW 4.86.1 Rebug Lite [CEX] if you want. I don't think you need to but you can try.
5. Install Webman mod, I'm using v1.47.34 install the full version (hold L1 + X when doing install)
6. Turn off the system
7. Plug in the hard drive (in port closest to Bluray drive)
8. Turn on the system
9. Do not use Prep ISO
10. Go to webman mod. If no games are present refresh Webmanmod and xmb. (I would do this either way)
11. The screen will go black (do not touch anything until it is done)
12. Try to load the game.
13. Turn off the system and reboot
14. Game should load automatically in Webmanmod folder
15. Turn off the system and load up the hard drive with games. (follow steps 7 - 14 again)

OK so I did exactly this and it kind of worked. The problem I am now having is no PS2 games show up, and PS1 games are doing something really weird. I am only getting around 350 PS1 games to show up (out of 800), and I think it's because it treats every single file as a PS1 game. For example:

lGEfdwr.png

I am not sure if there's any way to get it to show up properly in WebmanMod?

Also no clue why none of my PS2 games are showing up. They are in the PS2ISO folder properly.

can't say for sure about ps2 games, but iirc, wmm is only compatible with one bin/cue files. could be wrong, but you can convert them with a virtual drive.

Use CDMAGE to build a single bin/cue image for PS1. You have to open the cue file, select the root of "disc", and save as a new image.

About PS2, I don't know why they aren't showing.
