First of all, I assume you've patched it with bgtoolset before attempting to install CFW right?install only gets to 98%, been stuck there for 12+ hrs. should i just let it run and wait?
no i have not patched it, im learning. its stuck while copying to hdd from thumbdriveFirst of all, I assume you've patched it with bgtoolset before attempting to install CFW right?
Also, is it stuck while still copying the update to the internal HDD or during the update itself (after having already rebooted once)?
If you've updated to OFW you have to patch it first or it won't accept CFW.no i have not patched it, im learning. its stuck while copying to hdd from thumbdrive
initially it was from the latest playstation update. at this point im just trying to get to the xmb, when entering safe mode it freezes when seleting any option besides reboot. if its toast i can start over with ofwcorrect?
ERK stands for "EID Root Key" - basically it's the master key used to encrypt all the data on the PS3's internal HDD. It's unique to each console, which is why you can't move hard drives from one PS3 to another.thats perfect thank you. i lost 10000+hrs of saved game data before i installed cfw. figured since i was starting over why not jailbreak it. Question what is ERK? i do have a save backup when it was 3.85 version. i cant remember but this will help alot. thanks again
What's "it"?i plug it in and nothing happens
No, it will stuck now forever.install only gets to 98%, been stuck there for 12+ hrs. should i just let it run and wait?
That's not normal behavior.when entering safe mode it freezes when seleting any option besides reboot.

Or, as I said, they could dd the entire HDD, reformat it and then recover their files after they install CFW and get the ERK.No, it will stuck now forever.
You have experienced so called boot loop for which only solution is format HDD. Or format cache partition but for that, You need ERK.
Yeah, true, but at least he won't lose his save games, trophies etc. that way.@NiQ Which doesn't change anything because it still need to format it or - which he cannot do currently - cleaning dev_hdd1. Changing only status of data recovery.

appreciate the links,so im not sure why the hdd isnt showing up in file manager, what would a ps3 backup or the erk file be called? No, it will stuck now forever.

You cannot install CFW over OFW past 3.55. But this is not reason of update loop. Reason is broken FAT32 on that partition or some other Sony bugs in updater. However:

You probably mean 4.90.ok i found the hdd, it says its uninitialized.how can i format it and start over. i had evilnat 3.90 cfw i think.
I paste you links which you didn't read...hdd isnt showing up in file manager
Such CFW not exist. But whatever You had, now you have OFW if downloaded and started installing firmware update from Sony servers (you didn't make it clear what you did in first post and further).i had evilnat 3.90 cfw
my bad, yes it was the most recent evilnat, 4.91You probably mean 4.90.
Let the PS3 format it. After it's formatted it'll ask for firmware, at which point you'll need to reinstall Evilnat, either version 4.90 or 4.91 (you can upgrade but not downgrade at that point). Make sure you don't accidentally install OFW or you'll need to do the jailbreak again.
i read them, i havent done it yet. i need to use ps3 hdd reader but need encryption code. i dont want to toast my hdd,Initializing will make that disk clean for PS3 (because overwrite it by MBR/GPT) and she will format it. If you still experience boot loop, it mean that you have other issues, hardware one, not software.

If you have another HDD that you don't mind erasing then you can put the current HDD aside and use that spare HDD to initialize your PS3 instead. If you don't have a spare HDD you can create a bit-by-bit backup of the PS3's HDD using the Linux "dd" command (note that you must have free space at least the size of the PS3's HDD).i read them, i havent done it yet. i need to use ps3 hdd reader but need encryption code. i dont want to toast my hdd,
i accidentally started the sony update and i got a error code saying data was corrupted. i tried reinstalling the most recent evilnat version but it froze at 98%. i than tried to reformat to ofw but it froze on the safe menu page. plugged hdd in pc and it came up uninitialized and thats where iam at currently
