Journey of a Noob in the PS3 World

coldboots are interchangeable, so they'll work with any 3.xx/4.xx cfw.
all 4.xx cfw are compatible with one another.
themes should be okay.
gameboots and psn icons are firmware dependent.
@ pinkstuff

Hello,

Thank you for this wonderful information I had not known! :D
I will add it to the PS3-thread Im currently working on, as I have FINALLY just started my journey with PS3-CFW.

Any other advice/tips/information (you may have accumulated over your many years of experience) will be invaluable to me.
Please take a look at what Ive learned so far:

you can find some of what I know in my tutorials. sometimes I'll post new messages in them about new things I've learned that wouldn't necessarily fit in a new thread. that's what I've done with my wii u tutorials. there's A LOT of additional information in those.

if you want to check out some mods, you might want to check @LuanTeles mod. there are several options to choose from, so you can select whatever suits you best. :)

I'm not entirely sure if the wave on 3.xx is interchangeable with 4.xx. I made someone a wave on either 4.xx using 4.xx as a base, and he said it worked on 3.xx. there are definitely some differences there. the proc_iridescent.tga (the particles) is at a different offset for example.

Sweet !!
LINK me to your TUT page ?

@UniqueUserName , here it is: http://www.psx-place.com/threads/ps3-pro-mod-release-information-thread.14641/

it should be compatible with 4.82. there are literally hundreds if not thousands of options there. :-p
 The "should be"s are what scare me.

I have already downloaded what you linked, and will test it as time permits ( basically, I just got back into the scene and have started literally dozens of projects, 3 of which Im working on right now, as we speak lol ). ;)
Retired now, and wish to stay as busy as possible. :)

Im going to copy or move your advice to the thread I linked, so we dont dereail this one.
Please feel welcome in that thread, and of course, you are free to advise, help, or link, as much as you like.
It is nice to hear from you again!

Thanks for any help in advance, and for your help so far. :D

a link to my ps3 tutorials is in my sig. ;)
LMAO !
I literally laughed out loud at myself about that one.
Seriously, nice one, totally an excellent burn brotato-chip. ;) :) :D :-p

I am bookmarking your links for later tonight when I have some free time.
If tuts are all up to date for use with the newest goodies from Team PS3Xploit, I will add the LINKS to a few places they probably should be already.
Let me know ?

Keep up the great work !

I have a tutorial on updating cfw. iirc, it's the last one I wrote almost as a joke. the most needed tutorial being the last made me laugh. :-P it doesn't cover the new exploit, but it explains the use of minVerChk with a link to it on my mediafire account. I haven't updated my tutorials in ages, but most, if not all, information remains true to this day.

The wave is inside lines.qrc
You can see the compatibility in between versions very accuratelly here
http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Template:Lines.qrc

And the gameboot is inside custom_render_plugin.rco
We made another table with all the versions of if
http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Template:Custom_render_plugin.rco_changelog

There are a few more tables like this ones in wiki for other files, but not much... we did chose this ones because was good candidates to be a guinea pig, heheh
Whoa, thats a lot of text in those links. lol

Please clarify for our Noobs:
What do you want us to see exactly ?
How does the information help ?

Oink Oink maybe ?? ;) :)
Ill try ALMOST anything once LMAO.
( the "almost" was added specifically to stay off pinkstuffs radar, since Im quoting him too moohahaha ) ;) :-p

Funny coincidence, while you were talking about your LAST TUT for PS3, you mentioned my FIRST TUT for PS3.
LOL MinVerChk, which was the first PS3 Homebrew I ever used.
I added it to the resources here already. ;)

Are you going to update any of those tuts, at least for the new 4.82 firmware?
a lines file on 4.xx is still compatible with all 4.xx cfw, but it may have undergone changes that alter its size. it's the leap from 3.xx to 4.xx that's a bit hazy. that vertical wave I made several years ago still works on the latest firmware. ;)
I dont know if I should be happy or sad or both about this one. lol
@UniqueUserName , @LuanTeles check this out: http://www.mediafire.com/file/48b3uka110g4kw3/PS3~dev_blind~vsh~resource~qgl.zip

double-click that file in multiman to install it. it's my vertical wave. :)
Okay, DLing now.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
IF it bricks my new long-sought-PS3 on day two of ownership, I will be on a plane to you within the hour, pinkenstein :-p ;).
( Emojis aside, no really, I WILL ) LMFAO!

for some reason, the name of this thread reminds me of the song "Material GIrl." :-p
pinkypuff,

Are you implying that I "am a material girl in a material world" ??? :-p
Now that IS a wtf moment, for sure, LMAO! :D :D :D
Maybe I need more pink in my life? LOL ;)

Ill totally burn myself tomorrow at the dinner table with that one. :)
The fam will LOVE it !

No worries, Ill give you the credit for it!
( after everyone in shock drops their forks with their mouths all hanging open, of course ).

Awwwz, You know me so well !
LOL

@pinky @sandungas @bitsbubba

Please, Oh please, dont tell me that my entire digital collections of PSP and PS1 will not work with PS3 CFW ?????????

PS1 = VCD
PSP = CSO

Please?
Ive tried several games from each system with no luck.

However, my PS2 collection seems to work without issue, in ISO format.

I still need to get to Gamestop and score an actual PS3 game, so I can test that as well.
But, Crap! lol

Welcome to the awesome world of ps3 cfw brother! It seems as though you have gone beyond just dipping your toes in to test the waters.
Nice score on that 2500 model man. That is definitely going to be on my radar for my next purchase. I have an A01 with a teensy in it, an L00 with a custom e3 install I did, another L01, a 2k, and a 3k. Kinda hard to convince the old lady that I need yet another ps3 for my collection....

I think she gets it though as I have multiples of every console, it' part of my sickness or disease if you will.....lol. Now not only do we get your great ps2 knowledge but you also are apart of where it's really at with the ps3.

Do you have a psp, vita , or pstv? Those are also mini consoles that have benefited tremendously from being hacked to bits. I can't recommend the vita enough though dude, awesome stuff happened there in last year. Psp has always been great to. Let me know if ya need anything. Good to have you back brother!

it's a sickness. I own 3 360s (2 jtags; 1 cfw on optical drive), 2 3DS, and 2 wii u's. the wii u's are both plugged in. the 360's are in the closet minus 1 which is hooked up (I love mega man anniversary collection - I'm aware it's on the ps2. I even have a burn of it, but it won/t run on my tv d\ue to the resolution and I don't want to play it on the ps3 ;)). :and, I have an old 3ds and a new one (magor's mask) :-P

It great to finally be in your world! :)
Dipping isnt really my style now is it? LMAO!
Im totally up to my baby-makers again, with all sorts of ideas and projects, that I cant wait to flourish.
Yes, the 2500 model was nearly out of reach, but good thing I live by the "just one more try" = law of averages way of thinking. :D
13 stores, and only the last had the right model/datecode for which I was searching.
Good luck on your next purchase.

Quite excited to finally dive into the realm with the most support actually.
Love it already !

;)
Thanks! It is FANTASTIC to be back in full again.

pinkstuff, what exactly is the issue with your PS2-version of MMAC ?
I know I have it, and dont mind researching a bit to bring that goodness into your world if I can.
Give me some details of the issue.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@ BOTH OF YOU
About this "sickness", of which you both speak:

IMPORTANT NOTE:

WE ARE ALL GAMERS HERE !
So anyone reading this probably has a touch of the OCD with their gaming empires.

For instance, with some, its trophies or stats, others build huge collections of games, some need two copies of everything (one to play and one to always be NIB on display somewhere), and some play the model numbers/features card.
It is all good, you are among friends, whom are most likely afflicted with similar, ummm, lets call it "NEEDS", as yourself.

No worries, your-digital-family will always understand. ;)

Whoa, thats a lot of text in those links. lol
\o/ let me explain the purpose of the table with the lines.qrc versions
At the left column appears the firmware versions that used the same exact lines.qrc file, as example you can take the lines.qrc from firmware 4.60 (and any version in between) and use it in 4.82 because is the same exact file
If someone made a lines.qrc modification (the modifications made in this file are usualy related with the XMB wave) using a lines.qrc from 4.60 as base... you can use it in 4.82 because it should be 100% compatible

But if we step down to 4.55... you can see in the table the file is different (are grouped by its MD5 btw, to be 100% sure that are the same file)
So if you use a modifyed lines.qrc from 4.55 in 4.82 the results can be unexpected

And i say "unexpected" because we dont really know what was modifyed exactly after 4.55 inside lines.qrc file
The table in wiki has room at the right column to add this kind of details (like a changelog) but i never filled that info (maybe some day) because to make that accuratelly is needed to extract all the files inside lines.qrc (that works as a container and has more than 100 files inside), then check MD5 of all them, compare with previous firmware version, and after identifyed which files has changed... take a look at them to know exactly what they did

Lot of people thinks in the lines.qrc file as if it where simply "the wave" but it contains more than that, a couple of executable .elf files (the wave and sparks animations), 60+ FPO and VPO (program objects) under a "library" path, some tenths of MNU settings for the .elfs (this files are the ones modifyed to make custom waves) and others less important like some images (DDS TGA)

With the DDS and TGA there are not incompatibility problems... unless sony added a new one in between versions, this is obviouslly a problem if you take an old verions where is missing an image needed for 4.82 is not going to work fine

With the MNU files there is no problem either... unless the case mentioned before... if they added some new setting and you take a file without it in a firmware that needs that setting = problems

The changes in FPO and VPO are very important, if there is some change in them is hard to check (i dont even know how to deal with them, is some openGL stuff)

The ELF files i have not checked them, but i guess was not much updated, and even if it was updated, all versions should work in other firmware versions because is an .elf

-----
So as a resume to get the idea...
We know that groups in the wiki table are 100% compatible, there are 27 groups since firmware 1.00 up to 4.82
But we dont know which "groups" are compatible with other "groups" because nobody compared them in detail (if someone does, please add the info in that table in wiki), as example (i think pinky and me was talking about this before and we verifyed it for a couple of firmwares)... it could happen that the only change made in between versions of lines.qrc is simple a color adjustment (small changes in the MNU files)... in this case the groups are compatibles is just the visual effects are different
But as said, we dont really know, personally i prefer not to risk in using a incompatible file

no issue really. it's about all I play on the 360. :-P I usually play the wii u. I love that system even if no one else does. :-P I want a switch badly. I want it to replace my other wii u. ;)
