I've been sharing information with users on discord, and many have found it helpful - so I felt posting on psx-place to be a good idea. Throughout this post, are dozens of links to information, hardware, and tools recommended in 2025. I will continue to update this post as things continue to develop in the ever changing world of PS2 Development.
I hope this offers some entry clarity on options and recommended hardware peripherals/accessories.
LAST UPDATED: February 12th, 2025

If purchasing your homebrew/entry, MMCE devices are recommended over all other options thanks to their simplicity and ability to simply download an exploited VMC. No tricks, no skill.

MMCE Devices:
  • sd2psx - DIY Option
  • PMC(+/Z) * DIY Option - Screenless
  • MCP1-002 * MMCE Capable with less features than MCP2
  • MCP2 * Premium Features/Pre-orders Recommended
  • PSXMC * Screenless
  • PSXMC2 * Best Value/Most Available
MMCE Firmware, Downloadable Cards, and Information:

MMCE Notes:

  • Recent MMCE device reviews have been extremely misleading, do not believe the negativity on youtube. A properly configured and setup MMCE device will run much better than what has been featured on the hot youtube videos.
FFX does not stutter, KH does not stutter outside of 2 seconds on the Riku Wave scene, and Prince of Persia Sands of Time intro FMV is a little jittery.

PS2 HDD/SSD Recommendations:
*Bitfunx SATA Chip MUST be from Bitfunx Officially! There are TONS of clones and outdated resellers - you may experience compatibility problems with PSBBN or worse if using off-brand or outdated chips. You want official BITFUNX 2.0 SATA Chip!

Other Recommendations:

Speed Chart:
  • SMB would be between MMCE and iLink:
  • PS2LoadComparisons.png
All these recommendations above have been confirmed working by myself on a SCPH-39001 console.
All users whom have shared feedback with me, have been happy with their results and options.

If you have a recommendation for me to try and verify - I will add it to the list.
I welcome all feedback and will try to keep common questions added to the list as well.

Fyi USB will be enough to power SATA SSDs and most 2.5" HDDs.

Also HD Retrovision sells a PS2 component cable that is extremely high quality, meeting or exceeding OEM.

And SAG sells a bracket for 2.5" drives.

And of course RetroTink's various scalers. Even the 2X Pro or the Mini are good for just getting the PS2 on modern TVs lagless.

Oh and if you do go for a Mini, getting good S-Video cables can never hurt. Insurrection Industries makes fantastic cables.

RetroFighters Defender is the best aftermarket controller.

The Brook Wingman is a great Bluetooth adapter. Has pressure sensitive support like BlueRetro but also supports USB controllers like fightsticks.

Just my two cents, but the brooks PS2 adapter isn't bad. If you update it, you can use a dualsense on the PS2. I sold it with my PS2 a few years ago, but when I used it, it worked very well, no lag or dropped signals.

The USB with power supply will support all. Just makes more sense to have what you may need.

The HD Retrovision cables have mixed reviews - I"ll have to order them and compare before I throw 'em on the list.

Is a bracket necessary? I use 2.5" drives without it.

RetroTink is out of my price range but verified good - I'll add it to the list
I'll include S-Video recommendation too.

RetroFighter Defender looks great - I'll pick one up and try it out!

Brook Wingman has mixed reviews - some users report power problems or player 2 not working. I'm a bit weary of picking one up due to damaged reports over the last year. Then there are those who swear by it, being the definitive solution.
What I like about Blue Retro Core is you get two controllers for the price of 1. (Or in Brook's case, 1/4th the cost)
Based on *recent* reviews only being positive, perhaps I'll pick one up and try to find a flaw. If I can confirm its quality hardware for its price, I'll add it to the list.

EDIT:
Perhaps I'll add a "Community Verified Recommendations" section for that which I can't afford to confirm.

I Appreciate the feedback very much!!!

These guys make some of the best retro cables out there.

No, but if you keep your PS2 vertically and it gets bumped it could dislodge the drive and cause a short, probably blowing a fuse. SSDs should be light enough that this won't happen but if you use a 2.5" HDD it's possible.

It has a USB (either micro or C I can't remember) port on it in addition to the A port that can be used to provide additional power.
It's definitely feature on par with the single dongle BlueRetros.

Yeah, "brook" is what I was thinking of. I didn't realize wingman was the model name. It was actually recommended to me by someone a while back.

After extensive peer feedback on discord, I can safely say Brook and RetroVision are a win.
I've added *most* of these recommendations.
SAG's price on the bracket was too high IMO however.
