PS3 Unlock HDD Space - Unlock up to 8% extra total space on the PS3 internal hard drive

PS3 Unlock HDD Space by picard (aka 3141card)
All credits to einsteinx2 on psx-place.com for his great tutorial:

HOWTO:
  • Install the package on your custom firmware PS3 and run it. It finds the active superblock of the gameOS partition and do the necessary patches. Usually 8 percent of the memory is reserved, the app sets this...

So, since it is now very easy to do (instead of Linux script on PC or PS3 side) maybe someone who already "unlocked" space can test if options in recovery works. Some peoples says they cannot perform System Restore but we don't know (or only I don't know ;]) if this is issue of emer_init (broken support for 1.5+TiB storage) or broken UFS2 table, or no issues at all.

Hello! I´m worried. I installed the app in my ps2 super slim with 500gb hdd and everything was ok. I continued installing games in the 8 %. However I pulsed the app again after installing the games and there suppose to have occupied forbidden space. Then I pulsed it again and I recuperate the games and the space, but I´m still worried that I could damaged the games or so. They are filling a relly not existing space. I don´t know if I´ll have to reinstall the games.

Can you explain me if I broke the games?

Thank you.

@Rys_la_elegida

The "undo" option is intended for people who will think twice. Do I want to get the 7% from the reserved memory and thus reduce the reserved memory to 1% or would I rather not? Or people who might just want to see how much they would win.

It should be clear that you cannot use the new space to then set the reserved memory back to 8%. Because then there is no longer enough free space to return to 8% reserved memory, kk. Only when you have actually made the 7% free again, you can restore the original setting.

I can't tell you exactly how the filesystem reacts, but it will certainly not delete "occupied" data blocks in order to get back its 8%. At the moment when the superblock "thinks" that it has 8% reserved memory again, problems would probably only arise when you actually reach the limit of the real available memory.

I don't think you broke anything. :)

BTW, anyone who really wants to use the additional 7% should run the app once and then uninstall it.

I remember trying to unlock the extra space manually but I've came across some sort of incompatibility in Linux and gave up.
I confirm the app working, I've got +32GB from 500GB HDD on Slim 2504 model.

Thank you! :applause:

Are you able to compile other versions, too?
I see this one is "1% + space optimization". How about "1% + time" and "0%" variants for YOLO freaks? :stupid:

aldo added some commands to webman to unlock hdd also. the last one is what you want.

/unlockhdd.ps3 - toggle reserved free space in HDD between 8% and 1% (Thanks to @3141card)
/unlockhdd.ps3?enable - sets reserved HDD space to 1% (unlocks 7%)
/unlockhdd.ps3?disable - restore the reserved HDD space to 8%
/unlockhdd.ps3?<0-9>&opt=<0/1> - sets % of minimum free space & HDD optimization status

This sounds nice in theory, but it sadly seems to screw up the file system restore, forcing a full format of the hard drive. I've tried this on a 1tb hdd, i'm trying to see if i manage to boot it up once and skip the error message, so i can disable it. But i don't think it's going to work. Maybe it works better for drives under 1tb, i don't know

Edit: Nope, nothing is working. I did backup my saves prior to doing this because i wasn't 100 sure it was safe, a shame it isn't working with my hard drive, as it unlocked 60 extra gb of space. To anyone who installed this, did you face anything like this? And did you manage to force a boot to restore the hdd?

No. I used this on 2 PS3, both with 1TB. On CFW, I'm using this for 1 year without any problem.

if you mean it not working on hen, it should, because it doesn't use any lv1 syscalls.
If HEN doesn't have anything to do with it, then maybe it's the drive. I have a Western Digital Blue WD10SPZX, it's just a couple of months old and i've used it extensively to test it out, i did play some games during this period. I did notice some odd behaviour: when launching 3-4 games in webman one after another, sometime the console gave no signal and i was forced to reboot. It's not doing this on my other PS3 (they're both super slims) but i've always assumed this was because they're different models (well, different revisions of the same model)

not sure. I haven't used the app, and I'm on cfw. I have all the games I want with about 200GBs of space left, so it's unnecessary for me currently. I only use the internal hdd (1TB), so no external drives. it's kinda a hassle to get out my 25ft ethernet cable to transfer content to the ps3's internal hdd, so I only do so when there's a lot to transfer. I haven't bought any new games in a long time aside from tales of graces f (sealed), but I'm going to keep that sealed. I have no other games or content that needs to be transferred, so I'm good for now.

I also have a blue WD, WD10JPCX. The other is a Seagate ST1000LM048.
