PS3 Unlock HDD Space

PS3 PS3 Unlock HDD Space v1.0

indeed. it's what I use as well. from my experience, internal hdds are less prone to failure, especially when it comes to game systems. I'm still using the same 1TB hdd with my 360, and it's about 12 years old. never had any issues with it. your drive might be defective. I've seen that happen a couple times with external hdds, but I think it was the enclosure mostly that killed them (they were using the same enclosure).

Yeah, i've heard enclosures can kill hard drives sometimes, that sucks! I'll check mineater and report back with the results, if it is defective i should be able to get another one from the seller anyway

my virtual wii is using the same enclosure. the drive hasn't failed, but one time a game got corrupted before my very eyes. I have several backups of everything on my game systems, so I just deleted the game and transferred a copy back. it's been working fine ever since. it almost seems as though my issue was due to not using the hard drives. I had several games on each of the two, but I never played the systems, so the drives just sat there. they have toggle switches to turn them on and off, so I don't know what happened exactly. I've heard that the virtual wii can kill hdds if the drive remains connected to the wii u for an extended period of time unused, unless it has a toggle switch or you unplug the drive. several people have reported it happening to them, but I play my wii u daily almost, so I've never had that problem.

Nope, the drive is perfectly healthy. I'll reformat it and reinsert it in my ps3. This literally never happened to me before unlocking the extra space and starting using it, there might be issues with my (and possibly other) specific model, i will not test this out in the other ps3, as that's not the one i use for testing and don't want to reinstall everything there too.

Oh yeah i've heard the wii u's vwii is generally more problematic with hard drives than regular wiis, something about usb ports not supplying enough power and requiring a y cable

I am also using a 500gb disk on a ps3 slim modelo with cfw i was able to do filesystem checks and data restore with no problems i think that it may be able to be on a conflict when there are files into the 7% free space rate

Yeah, maybe the console freaks out when you're actually using the extra space on certain drives. I did a file system check as soon as i've unlocked the space (without writing anything on it) and it did work. Then i played a game which installed something like 4gb of data (before unlocking, my console only had 2gb of free space) so i'm thinking maybe the console would have kept working fine if i hadn't exceeded those 2gb. Whatever the case, it's interesting enough and it is worth mentioning that some drives might be iffy when using this app, or the equivalent webman mod command (which is what i used btw)
Maybe sony reserved so much space because its proprietary file system doesn't like certain hdds? A weird security measure to avoid corruption?

Maybe sony reserved so much space because its proprietary file system
There are none proprietary file systems on PS3 HDD. Partitions (because there are many) using FAT16, FAT32 and UFS2. Some doesn't have any filesystem.

The only proprietary fs which Sony ever used was APA+PFS in PS2 HDD (if we can call APA a file system, it is some kind of mandatory header glued to every partition, yet can contains data like executable, icon etc.), MCFS in PS2 MC (both by Sony) and TexFAT (by Microsoft) on PSV/PSTV internal flash partitions and memory cards. ;)

Unlocked reserves stick to UFS2 because it is one the features of this fs. The same can be done on PS4 because it also using UFS2 (at least on partition no.27).

So, after reformatting the hard drive and starting putting everything back in it on my ps3, everything seemed fine.. however, after a couple of days of usage, it suddenly became slow as shit, freezing and hanging constantly
Looks like it WAS a faulty drive, crystal disk info was wrong, apparently
I need to get it replaced, maybe do a sector by sector copy so i don't need to redownload all my stuff
I wasn't expecting that

I currently have my PS3 with HEN on firmware HFW 4.86 , can I install and run this on my PS3 safely? I am asking since I have a 1TB harddrive and extra space would be great

Can someone write down for me the webman url with the values to free 7% space and disable hdd optimization? I want to test this on a 120 SSD that I'm using on my PS3.

HDD Unlock is not related to WMM.

You cannot "free 7% space" and "disable hdd optimization" because this "optimization" is change UFS2 reserves from 8% to 1%. You cannot eat cake and have cake. Your question doesn't have sense.

webman has the following command:

/unlockhdd.ps3?<0-9>&opt=<0/1> - sets % of minimum free space & HDD optimization status

opt=0 is time optimization. (system default)
opt=1 is minimize disk fragmentation. (the app and tutorial use this setting)

BTW i do NOT recommend setting % to zero.
