PS3 (Research/Experimental) - NEC/TOKIN Capacitors Replacement - YLOD

Not the best looking repair but it worked like a charm, boss, pro, gem, dream, etc :congratulatory:! Im so happy again thanks to this thread and the people in there, I managed to repair a ylod PS3 CECHA01 that i got for 20 bucks. The ps3 came back to life again like brand new just by replacing 2 nec tokins on the rsx top side of the board with 4 330uf 2.5v tantalums capacitors on both. Now i really wanna get a PS3 CECHB01 for my collection :P. Thanks again to everyone and a big thanks to @Naked_Snake1995
Update: My CECHA01 was working flawless with the replacement until i tried to play tekken tag tournament 2 that gave me ylod at the start of every battle, soon as i saw the ylod i disassembled my ps3 again to replace another tokin! this time one nec tokin on cell (top side of the board) again with 4 tantalums 330uf 2.5v. Now my PS3 CECHA01 can play that game like a charm with no issues :D. I think that 1 nec tokin on cell is a must replacement i need to keep that in mind. Thanks again

Well that was expected, mine did the same thing when i was testing GT6 and TLoUs, only a replacement on the CELL made the difference, only on the RSX often would crash in more demanding titles, which was quite expected.

Hey naked snake got that ps3 today what weird about this one if I take HDD out I get the background with the moving GUI and it said no storage detected and when I put in the hdd in the ps3 i get the ps3 logo but no menu gui but when I get to shut down the ps3 I get 3 beeps and can't get recovery is this any relation to nec tokin

Yep that is the same issue that happened on my CECHE01 partial YLOD ! every time i wanted to turn off the console it just 3 beeps and blinking red light. I fixed that issue along with the ylod by replacing 2 nec tokins , one on rsx and one on the cell top side of the board in where the gpu and cpu are not present like in my photos above bro ! hope you fix that problem

OK so I figured out the way to trigger the ylod symptom is to overheat the ps3 with a really long thin screw driver to stop the fan spinning and I watched it happen so fast it was saying it overheating then the green and red light flashing then the yellow light popper up then must be about 5 or 6 beeps came through before the ps3 automatically shut down that would explain the missing GUI and no recovery

He already gave you the answer you needed, the 3 beep shutdown upon a normal shutdown is caused by a worm off NEC on the CELL region, just replace like he mentioned, my C04 had the same issue, it would 3 beep upon a normal shutdown, couldn't access the recovery either, after the replacement on the CELL the PS3 would operate normally.

Never do that, you'll risk to burn out the fan, and perhaps damage the GPU Substrate, be carefull.

Did you tried swapping the HDDs, usually when a NAND system hangs in the wave for a long period of time, it cannot access the HDD properly, so is an HDD problem.

Unless someone flashed or fiddled with the dev_flash exploreplugin.rco, which will cause an XMB crash, but if that was the case, the wave would been frozen, upon displaying the XMB,so we'll exclude that.

I only just tested the problem once and I only did the overheating once just to confirm the NEC tokin is at fault as I remember correctly it did 3 beeps with green and red flashing and 3 beeps with yellow flashed one along with flashing red.

Did the usual hdd swap it detected the hard drive and it usual HDD wipe that ruled out next is the removing the NEC nuked tokin so do I start from the back where the cell and RSX not present.

As well I took the hard drive out on my other ps3 the one with no bluray drive that shows no storage detected so that just to confirm my findings that the other ps3 needs NEC tokin replacement I will try sometime during the week and let ya know as soon as possible

You change the thermal paste soon enough maybe?

Life advice, don't celebrate the victory before the war has ended, i used to think the same way, when i had NEC based systems, that by changing the thermal paste, and cleaning them, they would become bulletproof, unfortunately they bit the dust like many others.

Yes, i saw people owning NEC based systems, still working in 2019, but there is a catch for that reason, they kept they're systems well maintained from day one, the majority of YLOD systems ive encountered were rammed with dust inside, even in working conditions, they would die after a week max, by dry thermal paste and dust debris inside, which would accelerate the NECs degradation, not to mention back in 2006 people use to put they're launch models into the TV Cabinets, essentially marking a premature death sentence.

I agree, i got another PS3 slim, and its working until today, but It starts to crash sometimes in RDR, i think the caps are begining to show degradation, but It is in bad shape, dirt and ALL, what explain It to last só long? I would say a better lot of nec tokins, but eventualy It Will fail

I knocked off the same caps again behind the cell cpu I might well give up after the second ps3 had the same problem. I got the first nec tokin off with no problem then put 4 tan cap on then the ps3 went to flashing red light after turn on. The second nec tokin was more trickier to get off that when I knocked off 5 or 6 really tiny caps I just don't seem to have good luck with this

@Naked_Snake1995

Finnally I has added the tantaluns in my PS3 CECHL-01, but not was fixed.
All NEC Tokins was removed and added tantaluns.
I had just 20 tantaluns.

In Cell in each capacitor space was grouped :
1 (CPU SIDE)- 2x 470 uf (one in each positive side)
2 (CPU SIDE)- 2x 470 uf
3 - 2x 470 uf
4 - 4x 470 uf
Total 4700 uf

RSX
1 (RSX SIDE) - 2x 470 uf
2 (RSX SIDE) - 2x 470 uf
3- 2x 470 uf
4- 2x 220 uf and 2x 330 uf
Total 3920 uf

I had added an jumper in each side of Cell and RSX.
PS3 nt show standby led.
Touching power button power on, but is power off in less of half second.
Perhaps is need reablling in CPU and RSX.

The Power cuts straight off because there isn't a proper voltage pass through, this is why i always encourage to leave at least one NEC, to avoid misshapens like this,as the NEC itself creates an internal bridge, so the current can be shared between both sides.

Ive removed 3 NECs from my L04, it behaves the same way, so there is a current interruption between the two vias.

What i can advise is to get two original NEC/TOKINs and resolder them again into the CPU and GPU, and the rest with Tantalums.

Its funny because for some, a full replacement Tantalums works like a charm even without the NECs present, and for some just straight YLOD, so something is failing here on the bridging department.

A fuse has blown!
Shorted/Damaged NEC can blow a fuse! If NEC replaced but fuse same, then same symptoms.

Here is proof:

FINAL MYSTERY SOLVED. CHECK THE FUSES!!!

why ps3 fat motherboard is very weak and also quickly dead?
But some motherboard is very strong like Nokia 3310 old model hardware

Holy Smokes, you are actually are a genius! Here is you cookie [emoji23][emoji514]

Like no, I saw that video like more than 9 years ago, ive done all the testing myself, and never encountered any blown 12V Fuse on the Motherboard, but it can happen.

Ive seen PS3 with short Ceramic Capacitors near the NECs, mostly L Models that failed the often.

This is not a definitive proof, this is just throwing a random case scenario, without any actual link to any console or equipment, so i would hold the horses there [emoji848]
