PS3 (Research/Experimental) - NEC/TOKIN Capacitors Replacement - YLOD

Btw @Revak3115 the thickness of the ground wire you was using originally in your first tests was fine, and i still think is only needed 1 wire for CELL and 1 wire for RSX (so 2 wires in total for the whole motherboard)

That's depend of the amperage. Due to the number of vias sony used... it's not insignificant. I would make one bridge per original tokin with 18 or 20 AWG (~ 1 mm2). And that way all the cap will be approximately at the same "distance" from the CELL or RSX.

Right now im not sure which PS3 model you have, and not sure if the game midnight club was emulated perfectly in the PS3

I guess is better to make some test with a PS3 game in JB format (composed by looooot of small files and lot of folders)... this could be considered an stress test for the hdd

*Copy the game to internal hdd... dont load it from external usb hdd because what you are trying to check/stress is the internal hdd
CECHB01
I copied the game from the Disc to the HDD using mmCM and have been running it off the HDD since before I replaced all caps

I know, but thats why there are so many vias all together connecting the tokins of a side of the motherboard to he other side
All that vias together are working as a thick wire connecting one side of the board to the other side

For the thickness of the wire im not so sure, but is better if is made with a single core, im not sure if the wire he used in his first photos was single core, but it was big enought imo

Like in GTA san andreas and yakuza games ?, i can imagine some more :D
-The reflowers
-The CRT gang

I made an image with the 2 photos uploaded by @Revak3115 incase some of you wants to paint on top of it
The only things i painted in the image are the motherboard model and an indication of which one is CELL and which one is RSX, remember when you flip the motherboard to take a look at the other side you are flipping CELL and RSX too :) (this could be confusing to imagine where is connected each line)

@Revak3115 congratulations on fixing your PS3, i was reading all your post and hoping to get your ps3 fixed :encouragement:

@sandungas & @Naked_Snake1995
I am going to make an order for the capacitors for my PS3 CECHG03, there is 330uf 2.5v & and 470uf 2.5v on aliexpress.
Which one i should order ?
In the guide i recommend 470uF for the Phats and 330uF for the Slims, its described within it.

Thank you, it was a very anxiety drivin process for me, Since there isn't really anyone that has replaced all NECs and documented it. A few times I thought it was dead for good.

All together I bought 32 470uF 6V Tantalums if you want the same ones I bought.

also I cut the RF shield of the PS3 where I put the new caps since it put to much pressure on the caps.

why would you be?worst case scenario is ylod again, eventually this process will be perfected and you can rely on it.

Also I'm still very much afraid of playing GT 6 or TLoU on this PS3.
It wont, you can try now, i think a user actually replaced all the NECs with Tantalums, cant remember the user, but long story short,he reported that TLoUs and GT6 wouldnt encounter this issue anymore, since these titles put a lot of strain on the RSX.

Ive seen users running GT6 on theyre CECHA/Cs without many issue, but these were consoles that werent much used,so the NECs were pretty much intact, and didnt have the fatigue as a used one.

idk something about playing these games now seems off in someway, like framerates. irdk if its just me being paranoid or what...

You're right, i have 2 other BC PS3's but having one thats breaks or performs poorly saddens me since the B01 is considered "very rare"

who knows maybe a year from now when alot of people do this repair i can go back and perfect it.

Just played MC:LA on a Slim 25001 and the game runs like crap on that one too. so its just a bad port on the PS3, especially as a ISO. i guess my PS3 CECHB01 is perfectly fine.

Yep, probably your PS3 is perfectly fine :)

But you should do the stress tests now
Is like if you have to repair a vehicle in your house to make a long travel with it... after the repair the best thing you can do is to abuse a bit of it in front of your house... this way if something breaks you are in front of your house and you can try to fix it again at your house
If the stress tests are successful you can start the travel and relax a bit with the confidence that your repair was well made

Is a bit psicological, instead of worrying about that PS3 for the rest of his life thinking "omg it can explode at any time i need to be careful with it"... is better to abuse a bit of it now and incase of success you can relax, stamp the "homemade fix quality seal" on top of it and enjoy :)

i doubt it will fail. plus i have no more space on the system.

also those Grey power caps by the old NECs do they need the metal shield to transfer heat? or can they just be free? since i cut that area off the shield and those caps had thermal pads, dry thermal pads tho
