PS3 (Research/Experimental) - NEC/TOKIN Capacitors Replacement - YLOD

Yeah now saying that sony did build a tank of a system more better than xbox 360 and i wanted to say thank you for putting the guide together. we all got the keep the old girl alive :)
On that i have to agree, i have my own CECHC04,and you dont know how much i adore that thing, and the fact that is still working, makes me happy, which means there will be no shortages of Backwards Compatible or even Phat PS3s to fix and to collect, it wont become a rarity and hopefully prices will drop, even for the working units, since the Caps will need to be replaced eventually.

I agree with ya 100% nothing worst i seen some fetching over crazy money saw one earlier something like €2500 brand new it claimed never opened

If I get this shitty CECHA01 working I'll get rid of one of my CECHC04 units if anyone is interested, it has been super reliable after the delid. I'm talking 150 - 200 hours of gaming w/o a hickup. I just don't have any space or use for three systems.

Hi,Friends, thanks, my machine is dual 65NM, motherboard VER-001,Some time ago playing TLOU and mysterious
seas and Resident Evil Revelation 2 the ps3 often shuts down automatically, playing God of War will not,
but several months later the God of War will shut down too, it auto shut down immediately when go to the menu
, , but some small RPG The game is fine.
I thought that the GPU need to reball , and later I accidentally found this forum, saw the Naked_Snake1995's
capacitor replacement program, and some photos of other friends. I changed it myself. All my NEC capacitors
have been replaced.
The original NEC is very fragile. When I press the shell, it is rotten. I changed the RSX(1000uf*4) to
16*330=5280, and the CELLX(1200uf*4) to 470*8+330*4=5080
The soldering is very bad,I had scraped the board. I was very worried at first, but the ps3 started up
successfully, and the GOW3 did not automatically shut down again. and then I will test other large games.
I hadnot take the photos, because I didn't expect it to be WORK after I installed it, and my machine is use
the water cooling, so it is not easy to take it down.
And the soldering is very bad,it is really Too much difference.
Thank you very much for your information.
In fact, I am also very curious why the capacity of the capacitor is so big that there is no problem.

what sort of price?

If I have no prior experience with fixing consoles or soldering should I attempt this?
I think you should do this together with a friend that has the fundamentals of soldering. You let him/her do the first tokin replacement, then with some help you can do the other. To me this looks like a good learning opportunity for you.

Unfortunately I don't have such a friend. I'll try asking repair shops and link them this article. Unfortunately repair shops aren't aware of this permanent fix yet.

i was nervous doing this last night even i didnt have the caps here as it gonna take awhile to come from china so it gives me plenty of time to clean up everything on the ps3 :)

I have ordered the 10 pieces of original nec tokin as the seller said they are brand new never used as i only had €7 in the bank to buy them and i will order the 50 pieces of 470uf 2.5v caps another day soon so i will keep an update on this as well :)

Resurrected my fat PS3 thanks to this guide! after it had been collecting dust for more than 5 years. Reballing $$$... denied!

Just wanted to post my results, although it is far from being an example of how it should look, maybe it will help somebody in some way. I did scraped a bit of green layer off the pcb, wish I didn't, cause oxidation and stuff...

Thanks to Naked_Snake1995 for an amazing tutorial and spreading this info to the masses, also sandungas for his input.

try using permanent marker or clear nail varnish to cover the exposed copper would be my guess. jeez the soldering looks messy as well ya may want to cover that with black electrical tape that would cover the exposed soldering otherwise ya risk a short
