Slim 21XX vs 25XX

Out of these two models, which is the ideally recommended? From what I was reading it seems both are well made and will last along time. Is it correct the only major difference is that the 25XX Blu-Ray doesn't need to be re-married and can also be removed if it fails and that CFW only possible on models pre 2011? And also that the CELL (not RSX) IHS on 25XX and newer has its lid soldered and epoxied down and can not have a delidperformed. Is the soldered issue present on ALL 25XX even very first product run of Q3/Q4 2010 models? Thanks

21xx models have less available spare parts than 25xx models do. I'd go with 25xx.

25xx models are much more quiet from what I remember.

Thanks. By chance do you know if all 25xx models have the CELL ISH soldered or not or is only later build dates in 2011 rather then 2010 build dates?

I don't recall that IHS being soldered on 25xx.

All CECH-25xx can have CFW if their factory fw is 3.55 or lower (current fw doesn't matter). It is hard to split them just by production date alone. To be 100% sure, You need real hardware access to try MinVerChecker.

From what I was reading, those made before December 2010 SHOULD be a safe bet. I was also looking at a few Japanese 25xx, but oddly, they do not seem to have Date Codes or Manufacture Dates on them for their slims. So no way to test without access for MinVerChecker.

Imho you should go for a 21XX as CFW compatibilty is guaranteed here.
Both 21XX and 25XX use 40nm RSX and 45nm CBEs

It seems the 25XX has updated BR components, but also ISH on CELL is solderd on all/most models. Are you or anyone else here aware of other hardware differences between the 21xx and the 25xx? I found several 25XX manufactured in the very first production run. These are 99% CFW for sure. Is there a chance these may not have soldered IHS? I take it there is no way to know until the attempt fails by ripping off the top of the die along with the ISH, huh? I guess what it comes down to is, would it be "better" to have a solderd 45nm CELL or a delided 45nm CELL?

Right. On the other hand BD logic is part of the main board on 25xx. In case of failure it's a lot more complicated to fix and remarry than on 21xx.

Just an update. Went back and forth on which one to ultimately go with, but decided to try and find an early 2010 25xx.

After a lot of searching was able to score a 25xx from the first production run of July 2010 on 4.81 firmware and MinVerChk reports 3.40 support. Needless to say, a resounding success! I still wonder though, is there a good chance the CELL IHS is soldered on this since this is the first month they started to produce this model?

But anyway, need to look into getting CFW running. Is it possible to update to 4.90, download my game library from PSN and then remain off-line for CFW? Also, is it still correct that once the CMOS battery dies, any digital games download will no longer be playable even if a new CMOD battery is installed?

I'm pretty sure IHS is soldered on the 25xx model. A couple guys tried to remove before and totally destroyed the chips in the process since it was impossible to separate the die from the IHS

Yes, I linked to one of the failed attempts earlier in the thread (real shame). Suppose that, in the end, 40nm CELL doesn't get all too hot anyway.

Yes, that you can do that, that's how i did it with my 2104B. Since bgtoolset is online again it should be a breeze.
After a CMOS change you can reactivate the console from the CFW options. So no content loss there, if least for games. If you have movies or series from PSN these can't be reactivated from the CFW.

I have a 25xx and it works very well, the only problem I had was having to put a rubber behind the motherboard because over time the heatsink no longer makes contact with the cell and rsx
