SSHD or HDD for PS3

Do you think it could be that kind of problem? It literally started after a firmware update.

Anyway, I'll have a look to MHDD documentation and see what happens. Does it work with USB adapters/enclosures?

ok guys, i have just dug this old thread up to save creating one, hope this is ok.

i am thinking about getting an ssd for my ps3 and wondering if it will benefit from it?

this thread is 6 years old and hoping ssd have now improved in ps3.

the old interface limits the speed. you would probably benefit much more by using it in something newer (especially a computer).

the same thing goes for usb devices. ps3 is only usb 2 so any usb 3 devices will run much slower with ps3.

many thanks for that coro, much appreciated :)

I'm also gonna try and my post in this thread, since its recently active.
I'm looking to get a new hard drive for my PS3 Slim. After reading various guides and threads, I'm gonna go HDD, 2,5" and maximum 1 tb, to fit all the offical requirements.
In another thread about Seagate Barracuda (https://www.psx-place.com/threads/fat-ps3-and-1tb-seagate-barracuda.27186/) I read that one should be aware that newer drives with 4k sectors could cause the games to stutter. Refering to this thread in another forum (https://gbatemp.net/threads/ps3-slim-1terabyte-hdd-stuttering-hdd-too-big.534408/)

However I would wanna try to get a HDD that's as new as possible and still avaiable to buy. So when I've been checking for newer ones I have found the Seagate Barracuda 1TB SATA 2.5" 5400rpm / 128Mb (ST1000LM048)
https://www.ebuyer.com/760590-seaga...-2-5-hard-drive-7mm-at-ebuyer-com-st1000lm048 - for example.

And from what I have been able to read from various descriptions and from the official data sheet (https://www.seagate.com/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/barracuda-2-5-DS1907-3-2005GB-en_GB.pdf ) I'm not really sure if it's using 4k sectors, since it says "Bytes per sector (logical/physical): 512/4,096". Does that mean 4k or not?
Maximum speed for IO seems to be 140 MB/s so that should also be within the margins.

Has anyone tried this HDD? Or anyone can confirm or deny my statements above?
Its sort of a jungle to try to find information about stuff you don't know much about to begin with, so I would be really thankful if someone did.

If it matters what model; I would use the Barracuda to replace the 160 gb drive in my original PS3 Slim (CECH3003A), just to get more space.
I might buy antoher one to play backups from in a jailbroken fat PS3 (model most likely CECHA, B or C), but thats a later project.

In the PS3 slims sony was using the 2.5" hdd's availables in the market with the lowest power consumption
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Harddrive#Harddrive_Model_info

Hitachi travelstar and a specific serie of toshiba.... both intended to be used in laptops, see this review for laptops, is not a coincidence that are mentioned both hitachi travelstar and toshibas
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/notebook-hard-drive-review,3270-11.html

That review is from 2012 though, i dont know nowadays but probably this manufacturers are still making 2.5" hdds with low power for laptops to replace the old models

I dont know much about the problems derivated from sector sizes though

Thanks man!
Yeah it's really a lot of factors to take into considiration. I'm not sure how big of a problem the 4k sector-issue is since it's not a problem that I've seen reported that much. And it's hard to find resellers for the ones with smaller sector sizes anyway, barely any newer ones. So I might skip that and hope for the best.

I was able to find some Toshiba drives. Seems like Seagate and WD's drives are kinda on the same level as far as power consumtion goes these days. Atleast at write/read, with Toshiba being little bit lower at idle. All of them (Toshiba, Seagate, WD) is luckily pretty much in range with the numbers that those drives Sony was using had.

Really appreciate the tip though, I didn't know about the power comsuming aspect so now I know what to avoid there as well. So I will go with either Seagate, WD or Toshiba. Hopefully it will be enough to match drive size, power consumtion and maximum speed.

Also i can recommend you to use a 7200rpm 500gb hgst hard disk i am using one of those on my PS3 slim cfw model and it goes really good also the temperatures wont go Up so much actually its basically the same ones when i used the 5400 rpm previous HDD, and also on the game performance it Makes a difference on loading speed but try not to use SSD, i had a 480gb ssd crucial bx500 but in some point the games were into a lag especially the evil within but when i changed to the 7200 rpm HDD it goes excellent on my case

I have been using this Samsung 860 QVO 1TB Solid State Drive (MZ-76Q1T0B/AM) for over a year now no problems way faster then 7200 i had in before
I have done CFW changes check HDD Indexing mutiple times with no problems another nice thing droped my temp at same fan speed 10c
only thing is i noticed prices have went way up to bye this SSD close to 80$ more then i payed

does 7200 rpm hdd really makes that noticeable difference?
thinking of upgrading but does it have any benefits or just heat also does anyone know if it has a higher chance of dying?

just checked the dev wiki it's mentioned that the factory one has 25m/s but a 7200 has 95
yet it says the difference is marginal am i missing something

Yes actually the HDD under 7200 RPM makes a difference at least for me works fine and goes really well unfortanely ps3 do not have SSD support i tried to use one of them but it gave to me lag and sometimes it freezes by itself in most games and on the loading times there was no difference vs 7200 RPM HDD ones finally for the temperature i do not see any degrees difference either

I have a toshiba travelstar 1TB installed in my PS3, I think I'm using it since 2018 or even before.
Nowadays when my PS3 boots, PSN Game Icons take longer to load than usual, maybe 3 secs- 5 secs to load all icons. This symptons started 5 months ago. Do you guys think my HDD is in it's last days?

If yes maybe a should hunt down a SSHD (1TB). Recently it's being difficult to find a disc drive that isn't a SSD.

We don't have crystal ball. ;) Check S.M.A.R.T. of this disk.
You don't have crystal ball but I have CrystalDiskInfo (LOL). I wasn't asking for a sure answer, if it was the case I would connect the HDD and check by myself. I just wanted to know if maybe its a symptom related to hdd wear in PS3. Thanks by the way, I will consult my Crystal(DiskInfo)Ball. :rolling:
