VPN services, a little help?

so long story short, i have every gen of xbox, a PS3, PS4, PSTV & VITA and other devices. i have to keep a close eye on my ISP's data cap as i come pretty close every month. Well yesterday i had to call them as i got on the internet it said i had to call to enable it again. thinking i went over my cap i called (installed MW3 & infinite warfare 112 gigs roughly) i was flagged for streaming a movie, also was advised to delete such file if i hadn't already, and that if they found that item in my computer or possession there would be severe punishment and loss of data for 6 months. asked my son about it and he said he used a app on the xbone and was same movie ( stay away from will smith lol). so after a day thinking about it thats creepy he knew what time it was and what movie it was. what else do they, can they do. i am not saying what was done is okay but i dont like the fact they can do that. i like my privacy. i am asking because between the xbone and the ps4 and the fu@kin ridiculous update sizes i am even more concerned.
anyone have a vpn or have used one in the past? they all say the same and considering they will have access to my data.
and after reading a older article about a wiki leak and some Samsung TV's and the CIA lol

EDIT: forgot to mention that i told my son even if there is app for it, doesnt make it right or wrong, but it is up to the end user who makes that decision. we have deleted that app.

Personally I would be looking into a new ISP. I've never had that issue with my ISP and my monthly average data usage is about 500GB (game updates, digital downloads, Netflix, streaming, smart TV, PC's, MacBooks, mobile devices,... - The list goes on and on lol).

@barelynotlegal

Like most ISP, yours is, unfortunately for you, working hand in hand with the cinema/music industry & most likely with the various government agencies.
Very few ISP have the balls to defy those guys. For instance, as far as I know, where I live only one ISP will not collaborate in any way. A decision not taken lightly because the amount of BS they get on all front for it is actually unbelievable....
In any case your ISP sees everything you do & will flag you up again like they just did.
Of course, watching your account for illegal downloads is only the tip of the iceberg, you can be sure that there is much more going on behind the scene...

Using a VPN is a smart choice however beware which VPN services you buy. VPN services have been targeted too with all sorts of blackmail if need be so they would collaborate, just like ISPs, thus defeating the whole purpose of using such services! Do not trust VPN services blindly!
I suggest you research the subject thoroughly until you find a decent VPN service that is unlikely to squeal on you the day they get asked about your online activities.. Keep in mind that there is no guarantee either! Keep in mind that if the VPN company keeps logs/history then they are in a much weaker position when dealing with Big Brother... One cannot divulge information one does not have/keep!

Obviously you need a service that does not keep any log or history among other things... Some of them might also give you an encrypted email account as part of the deal, that can be useful.
Personally I use the same VPN service for the past 2 years & it took me a few weeks to select the VPN company I was going to entrust. Although it's impossible to tell whether they keep some kind of history as promised, at least I have never received a single warning despite much streaming & downloading... Families & friends who don't use VPN have all received warnings for copyright infringements in the past 6 months.

Did a little researchxand to me they all seem the same advertising the same
What service do you use. I was looking at ipvanish and vpr vpn. Not worried about price as privacy is key to me...

At first glance they all look the same indeed so obviously the choice is made very complicated. That is why it took me weeks to figure this out.
Had to resort to investigating, finding out what companies are behind the VPN services, searching for any mentions of those services by the media, independent (maybe?) reviews or by its own users including possible court cases & how they handled themselves there... Of course it's impossible to know for sure like I said before but at the very least you can already get rid of all the jokers, VPN companies who will definitely collaborate when push comes to shove... In truth, that is at least 75% of them... Possibly more...

Of course it also depends on how much stuff you download & how frequently you do it.
If we are talking about very occasional downloads, the risk of having such problems with a VPN service is probably a lot lower but still... People who download a lot are the ones who really need to be careful...

anyways going to do some more looking and thanks for the tips.

1. enable encryption on your ut client
2. private tracker
3. no dht or px
4. peerguardian/peerblock
5. vpn is always nice addition

Ive been DLing for years following those rules (no vpn). Often get a couple of TB in a month. I think the private tracker is an important part of it. If they are not in the pool they can not get your IP in the first place.

I use literally one private tracker now, that i've been using for years (may be the same one if it starts with i and ends with s.com) and ive never had a letter, issue, on comcast. And i'm talking this account has several terabytes of download that i've not zapped away... :)

Nobody uses Usenet instead of P2P to download ? This is a good alternative, the connections to the provider's servers are encrypted by ssl. Some offers includes VPN.

astraweb for the win. usenet is what I use, and I've never received an email from my isp. I did a few times while using things like torrents. I only use a private tracker with those.

I used astraweb in the past. For some reasons i stopped this provider and tried several others. Probably i changed because of DMCA takedown grewing up.

Now i'm using newsgroup ninja and i'm plenty satisfied. Never received an email from my isp too (i live in France).
This combined with a htpc on linux: Kodi + nzbget, sonarr, couchpotato and nzbhydra for indexers (managed by muximux). This is really great but a little off-topic :)

I used to have thundernews 'til they lost my account information. they had a black Friday sale at $5/month for life. they don't have as good retention as astraweb, but that's a steal. :)

ive used newsgroups in the past, many many moons ago. Anyways back on to subject, i dont use torrents very often i am just concerned about my privacy and what if for some reason another movie was streamed i would like my ass covered lol. as far as a private tracker i wouldnt know where to start, seems i have to be connected.
used peerblock when streaming videos, but wasnt home for this event.

I haven't paid my cellphone since may. My furnace has been broken for now almost 2 months, because it took us a month to save up for the igniter, and it wasn't the right one... driving on one tire that shows threads, one that still has a screw in it, and the other one was patched. I was able to manage to get an oil change after around 9500 miles from the one before it. gives you an idea... oh..and i think i owe my room mate somewhere int he neighborhood of 2500 bucks in past rent...
