Webman Mod freezing PS3

Okay, so i installed ferrox -> rebug 4.82 on new hdd on ps3, ran toolbox etc & dumped the ERK.
I have plugged the hdd that froze on boot into a portable hdd enclosure,
plugged it in on my windows 7 x64 laptop,
did not initialise & did not get any offer to format from windows,
the enclosure did a driver loading thing automatically,
i am hoping this didn't kill the frozen hdd,
as when i open hdd reader gui v1.3 or ps3 hdd utility v1.00,
they find the eid root key i placed but both apps say "no valid hdd"
I am concerned already seeing this, as i was expecting for it to read & be in the clear getting my important files off it :(
When ejecting this drive, in the eject menu it only says the enclosure in black (no greyed out hdd name - so it aint initialised etc)
I simply ejected it, and wont do more til i really know how to proceed from here

What would u suggest to do next, etc, and is the hdd simply needing to be tried by direct plugging into say a desktop pc via a sata cable,
and using an enclosure do u think it wrecked my chances when the enclosure installed its drivers automatically when plugged in?
Try it directly with sata into PC if you can. It should still be ok after driver install. even if you did initialise it, it should still be readable on PC, its just that you lose ability to put it back into PS3. If you don't plan on doing that it doesn't matter either way afaik.

Well i can do that if i fire up the old desktop with it plugged in with a sata cable, i will have to blow the dust and cobwebs off it lol.
Good to know about that it should be okay even after the driver install.
I definately don't want to initialise it, as if i can't for some reason see it appear on pc with the sata cable,
can i still plug it back into my ps3 and try safe mode options and see if it somehow fixes after a few tries of each (Never know right!? lol)...
or since i have installed a new rebug ps3 hdd, can i really still use the frozen one in this machine ? :))

I have tried to fix it in safe mode, maybe once to twice per option, eventually theres always a chance it fixes and boots again.
But probably not i would imagine. The only thing i didnt try was to ps3 restore-wipe it.

Yes, you should be able to swap back to old HDD as long as it hasn't been initialised on PC. Although unlikely, there is a slight chance it would work after repeated tries on the PS3.

Figured throw in my 2 cents did anyone think maybe plugin.txt has confilcting things running try with old HDD if it will now boot
:but select:+:but l3:+:but l2:+:but r2: it deletes plugin.txt

also maybe
:but select:+:but r3:+:but l2:+:but r2: Reset SAFE (deletes webMAN MOD config file & reboot)

Yes... slight chance it would work is good (Though the more i try, let it freeze, turn it of by holding down the ps3 on button, the hdd might get heaps corrupted the more i keep trying unsuccessfully & then not read on pc. After dinner i am trying to plug the bad drive in a sata slot on my trusty old desktop & see if it comes up on that. I hope so!!! Literally 3-4 years of saves on 50 games, and 6 months of work installing probably 40 or 50 ps2 and ps3 pkgs and isos on that drive depend on it. This is already a disasta

Thanks !! This info could be gold. Might be worth trying before plugging the old HDD into Sata on desktop to try salvage with eid root key

This would be nice to try, but when i turn it on now, i get the file system on sys storage corrupted and will be restored, press the ps button and x message, by time about 5 seconds or so after i see that passes its frozen. No chance of getting to xmb at all. :(
I just tried the top command with buttons held in on boot. no go

So, i tried it with a sata cable in a desktop pc, and just like the problem i had on my laptop, got no valid HDD messages in all ps3 readers ... i have about 8 of them, all return same message about no valid hdd.

When the pc booted up, it installed the hdd driver of the brand of that drive a Hitachi from late 2012..., but didnt offer to format etc.
Just would not be recognised in ps3 hdd reading apps, and i tried all safe mode options with it plugged back in the ps3, all still froze 10sec in.

This drive was good as gold before til during this update and something bad bad bad has happened, i highly doubt its hdd failure itself,
i've hardly ever had that happen to 100s of HDDs and this one was good.

I guess from here i could

a) Try let it initialise & maybe then it might recognise on the pc ps3 hdd reading apps.
What people think about that idea??

Failing that nothing left to do but b) put in a drawer in case in future the community finds a way to read corrupted ps3 hdds plugged into a ps3 externally or on a pc etc etc... we got to dream, this is how advancements get made haha

I'm not sure what you should do, so will let someone else answer..

Neither am i! I have brought it up in multiman in standard cfw mode with pfs driver as pvd_usb000 & pvd_usb001.
If there was only some way to read it. Cmon devs.... someone much smarter than me please work on a way to read them externally on ps3.
(Imagine the possibilities, retrieve old ylod drive save games and content, rebuild file system - scandisks & repairs, backing up etc)

I think i will hold onto the drive & hopefully one day soon someone will have found a way to read internal drives.
The only other thing i can think of is to let windows intialise this drive & see if i can read it on pc then with ps3 hdd readers.

If anyone has any ideas to get into this drive, let me know!!

if you mean reading an internal drive, externally, there is a way to map certain directories (i.e. installing gamedata, dlc, updates to an external hdd), but I'm not sure if it's possible to do an entire drive. plus, that's if the drive in question is in fat32 format. I'm not sure about a drive that was encrypted by the ps3. it may not work correctly due to a serial number mismatch. I'm just speculating though. I do a lot of reading on these systems, especially the ps3, and I've never heard of any research regarding this. fat32 may be required since it's native to the system. maybe someone else can shed some light on this. :D

Afaik there are currently only 2 ways to extract data from a ps3 internal hdd, both of them require the eid_root_key to decrypt the UFS partition.

1. Using ps3 hdd reader on Windows. The disk should not be initialized by Windows on connection otherwise essential partition data will be overwritten & the encrypted UFS partition will become unreadable in any system as a result.
2. Using the device mapper on Linux running on your PC or on your PS3 (http://psdevwiki.com/ps3/Mounting_HDD_on_PC#Device_Mapper). This is the best/most flexible way to access the encrypted hdd but setting it up might be tricky for the Linux uninitiated.

You are right, in theory a dev could code a brew that would extract data from a ps3 internal hdd hooked up as external usb device. For instance, with enough work, Irisman's dual pane file manager could be modded to read/write from/to a UFS partition hooked via USB, decrypted with either the console's own eid_root_key or any other key the user wishes to input.
It would be a nice & useful feature to have actually.
Alternatively, 3141card's ps3 hdd reader PC project could also be improved further..

The idea is good imho, now you need to find a C dev who could be interested in such a project & has enough free time on his/her hands to see it through.. ;)

I LOVE THIS IDEA !!! Devs!!! GET ON IT!!! Who ever can make that will be a hero to millions!
There must be 360 million ppl out there with YLODed old HDDs with lost save game info etc,
and people like me on cfw with 100s of save games & months of work setting up isos etc i dont want to lose.

I REALLY JUST LOVE THIS IDEA & HOPE SOMEONE MAKES A BREW that can do it!
I will start a thread later & see if any C Devs jump on it!

Your not going to believe it.
Solved!!
Just mounted the frozen ps3 HDD on my PC in 2 seconds.

Here is how!
1 Created %username%/ps3tools/ps3tools/tools/ (After seeing in a thread comment from Aldo himself where files should go!?!)
2 Put all Aldostools gui files inside "tools"
3 My EID root key is already among these files
4 Rammed in my non-booting PS3 HDD (currently in an enclosure) into the PC USB with reckless abandon
5 Opened PS3_hdd_gui ... as "ADMINISTRATOR" from "THIS NEW LOCATION FOR THE GUI"
6 Voila, i could see HDD info at the bottom!
7 Clicked on dev_hdd0
8 Looking at the whole PS3 HDD Contents!

THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO HELPED ME, ADVISED ME, TOLD ME WHAT TO DO & WHAT "NOT" TO DO ALONG THE WAY
I would probably recommend doing a sector-by-sector backup first before working with the ps3 (I havent- very reckless of me lol !!!)
I would probably recommend plugging the drive into a pc that is switched off, with Sata & power cord (not e-sata) as i have been advised
I am not sure if creating the new directory from (your username/ps3tools/ps3tools/tools/) and putting files inside is essential but a good idea!
Here i am doing it the most slap happy way i can & have access now! Woohoo

If you were like me and on CFW and your ps3 HDD wouldnt boot and wouldnt repair/restore in safe mode,
then u can do what i was advised to do by these legends here,
and power off the ps3, remove the HDD, put in a new HDD,
install the same CFW via a thumb drive in port 2,
and install rebug toolbox, dump the EID root key,
retrieve it from where it saves on the internal drive in multiman/irisman (i forget exactly where)
and copy it to your external in one of the above manager,
then u have your root key, get it into the same folder as your ps3_hdd_reader app on PC,
and run as the tool as Admin (probably from where ive seen Aldo say the files should go)
youll access that drive and retrieve all your long lost data,
then you can back it up on external and copy it onto your ps3 & be all good again!!

HUGE THANK YOUS ARE IN ORDER!!!! CHEERS GUYS
