Currently there isn't. Using PKG Linker via direct PC to PS3 Ethernet Cable connection is the quicket transfer method.
This limitation is due to the fact that the PS3 can only read external hard-drives that have a FAT32 file system. Any file on an external hard-drive cannot be bigger than 4gb, which is why we must resort to transferring larger files directly from the PC to the PS3.
(There ARE alternatives TO PKG Linker, but I think they're all still FTP transfer methods.)
I agree that it may be a bit troublesome to get everything set up, but once you get used to it, it gets easier.
Now, when I need to transfer/install something, I can simply switch from Wireless connection to Wired. I choose Manual on the IP settings, and it keeps the IP settings that I have for PKG Linker. Once I'm finished I can simply switch back to Wireless connection, and just go back and forth as needed.
That's the easiest way I can suggest setting it up to make it easier to switch back and forth between your PKG Linker connection and your internet connection, hope this helps.
I have a few tips in my (unfinished) troubleshooter guide, and there is more information on the PKG Linker 2.0 thread that could help you if you're looking to optimize your settings and figure out the easiest way to set things up.
