PS3 Compatibility List - PS2 on PS3

After more testing, I found that Burnout 3 doesn't even need a config for a speed fix. If a race starts slow, then crash your car and restart the race. Speed is fixed automatically. I have no way of debugging this, but I am sure a config can be made to alleviate the issue without having to restart (if whatever is causing it is found).
Awesome, but im wondering if crashing the car is really needed ?
I mean... what happens if you press start button 5 seconds after starting the race and select "restart race" ? (without crashing the car)

---------
Just a blindshoot theory based in.... nothing
1) Before the race starts for the first time the game tryes to load some stuff with several threads/functions, but one of them have problems... and tryes to load the stuff again... and again... and again... (enters in a loop)
2) The race starts for first time, but there is one thread in a loop, so the performance sucks
3) Crashing the car (or restarting the race) breaks the loop :victorious:

If thats true, the solution could be to add a delay (lets say of 3 seconds) to the "loading" screen (before starting the race), maybe this could help to complete the loading... this is the most optimistical approach because it implyes the game will load all stuff normally
The alternative is to "break" that thread with the problems, lol

US is working, but frame rate out of battle and in cutscenes tends to be very low. I was working on a speed fix for it, but the game uses a protection mechanism to prevent codes and cheats. The code I found cuts the frames from 60fps to 30fps to bring a big speed boost but it is not possible currently to implement in into netemu (@kozarovv was helping me with it a few weeks ago).

Also, I managed to fix Burnout 3 today using a similar method:

Burnout 3 - Takedown (NTSC-U)
Code:
3D 00 00 00 57 44 00 00 0A 00 00 00 02 00 00 00
DC 17 4E 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 80 01 A8 BA 51 00
00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
This essentially limits the framerate when it cannot reach 60fps. The downsides are it runs at 30fps most of the time instead of 60fps, and some ingame stuff runs at half speed as well (pause menu, loading screen animations, signature takedown animations). But hey, the game runs full speed now.

Please note that the only way to use this config is using kozarovv's patched netemu: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/p...-for-original-opcodes-in-0x0a-and-0x09.20602/

This is until a proper CONFIG can be made for the unpatched netemu. :)

Restarting the race while not in the crash will not fix the slow motion! Its so weird. I think it has something to do with the actual crash itself, since the frame rate during a crash goes to a variable type frame rate instead of a locked. Maybe restarting during that segment will keep a certain value in memory? Weird for sure.

Definitely going to check this out. Thanks!

So is needed to restart the race while crashing ?. in the middle of the animation sequence where can be seen how the car is destroyed in slow motion ?

Interesting, now im wondering if the game engine disables some visual effects in that animation (things like the motion blur mentioned in the link), there are some visual effects that are not needed in that animation so i guess are disabled for it

Dunno, but it looks you are on the right track (pun intended) :encouragement:
The latest patches published here are making me remember something i said many time ago (i was insisting in it without having any proof, it was just an intuition)
There are a bunch of PS2 games that doesnt works fine in the PS3, but most probably that games could be playable by disabling visual effects
Kozarovv has been fixing a buch of games by disabling the mipmaps, and the racing games seems to need to disable stuff too

Is just for sony, disabling features is not an aceptable solution, when someone buys a "PS2 classic" in the PSN store it needs to work 100%
But for us is aceptable if the emulation is not 100%

It could be that something is disabled, but the picture itself looks exactly the same as it did before (at least from first glance). I found that the slow motion gameplay happens when the game cannot reach its 60fps target, and the "crash" fix at least makes it so instead of the slow motion gameplay it instead drops down to 30. It still hits 60 when it can, but drops down to 30 when it can't. This makes it so it doesn't affect the game speed and the race runs at a normal speed.

I think Sony disables stuff too though! Like in ZZT2 in the Japan store, the blur effect is disabled as a speed hack. They probably did this on other releases...they are probably finding sneaky ways to fix problems, too. :)

This is the same than saying the ape escape 2 config is "broken" (included in managuinz database and other tools)
If thats true is needed to take it down by now (and replace it later by the good one)

Just a tip, look at the 9th byte of the config file (is the ID of a command), and search for it in this table (in the column labeled for "ps2_netemu")
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Talk:PS2_Emulation#PS2_Emulators_Config_Commands
The comands colored in green (like the 0x0A used in ape escape 2 config) are patching areas that can vary "by region" of the game
The command 0x0A is patching the Emotion Engine memory area, but the euro/usa/asia versions (of the same game) could use the EE memory in a different way
Because are the same game... usually that differences are just a displacement of some bytes that has been moved

So.. the way to "port" it is by comparing the memory of the different regions of the game to find that displacement, this needs to be made with PS2DIS, an emulator, etc... i dont know how to do it

It could be that something is disabled, but the picture itself looks exactly the same as it did before (at least from first glance).
But maybe is because the visual efect is not active in first place, like what i mentioned before, the race starts for first time, but there is a thread trapped in a loop causing a excesive workload
In the crash animation the problematic thread is paused (because the game engine doesnt uses that visual effect in the crashing animation), and with your trick you are stopping it completly for some reason

I think Sony disables stuff too though! Like in ZZT2 in the Japan store, the blur effect is disabled as a speed hack. They probably did this on other releases...they are probably finding sneaky ways to fix problems, too. :)
Well, i guess some small changes could be aceptable for them, but what i meant is in some way we have a lot more freedon than sony to fix problems
Just as an example, not sure if this bug was fixed but there was a silent hill game where the handgun holder was "tilting", this problem is not going to pass the "quality control" to be published in PSN store like that because lot of people is going to complain in the official blogs, there are going to be some people asking for a money refund, etc..

But we can make it invisible (so not more tilting in a dirty way), or replace it by a lollipop.. this would be ok for us, lol

@sandungas thx, but I'm not a program guy, cant figure out those.
maybe only kozarovv can do this, if he's not busy.
I mentioned it because you are playing with configs latelly and i hope it will help you to get used to them
When someone talks about a config or is posted here i use to take a look at it to get an idea of the commands used in it and i compare the commands with that table

The tricky commands are colored in black, green, orange (and maybe blue that are a unknown), we could say the values used in this commands are unique
But all the other commands are generic, the configs that only contains generic commands can be used for different regions (and sometimes even for different games)

I converted the Burnout 3 speedhack codes that @lex3a pointed me towards to a config (had to port the Japan region patch since original US patch was taken down) and it helps the speed a whole lot. The game runs at 60fps for around 80-90% now.

The pesky slow motion bug is still there but it is still fixable with a car crash. Crashing and continuing fixes the bug, or crashing and restarting makes the race start fixed.

Burnout 3: Takedown (NTSC-U)
Code:
3D 00 00 00 57 44 00 00 0A 00 00 00 03 00 00 00
E8 51 13 00 A8 BA 40 AC A8 BA 43 AC 80 53 13 00
A8 BA 60 AC A8 BA 43 AC BC CD 13 00 A8 BA 60 AC
AC 43 BA A8 00 00 00 00
Completely fixes the slow motion bug. Game is now 100% playable, but frame drops are still present.

Burnout 3: Takedown (NTSC-U) (all speedhacks except blur and low quality car enabled)
Code:
3D 00 00 00 57 44 00 00 0A 00 00 00 06 00 00 00
20 5F 66 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 01 01 28 5F 66 00
00 00 00 00 00 00 01 01 3C 5F 66 00 00 00 00 00
00 00 00 00 E8 51 13 00 A8 BA 40 AC A8 BA 43 AC
80 53 13 00 A8 BA 60 AC A8 BA 43 AC BC CD 13 00
A8 BA 60 AC AC 43 BA A8 00 00 00 00
Burnout 3: Takedown (NTSC-U) (all speedhacks enabled)
Code:
3D 00 00 00 57 44 00 00 0A 00 00 00 07 00 00 00
20 5F 66 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 01 01 28 5F 66 00
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 30 5F 66 00 00 00 00 00
00 00 00 00 3C 5F 66 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
E8 51 13 00 A8 BA 40 AC A8 BA 43 AC 80 53 13 00
A8 BA 60 AC A8 BA 43 AC BC CD 13 00 A8 BA 60 AC
AC 43 BA A8 00 00 00 00
The last two configs have the added speedhacks from the PCSX2 forums thread. The last config will run the best, but the second config still has the iconic blur effect and higher quality car model (it doesn't seem to hit performance too hard at all). Also, the last two configs can only work in kozarovv's patched netemu, but the first should be fine for unpatched version.

I will still be testing these, but as of now it seems to be fixed for good. Whew.

its ok im just wonder...maybe u will port another config file from Ghosthunter game! US to EUR SCES52156
