Here is a FMCB\FHDB Noobie Package that comes with four* versions.

* - More info can be found in FHDB tab.

If an installer will ask:
Do you want to keep "FREEMCB.CNF" or "FREEHDB.CNF", select "No".
Without updating these settings, you'll not have shortcuts for new apps (e.g. OPL v1.0.0).

1. If you choose a package with BDM
run wLaunchELF from the PS2 Browser.

2. Select Configure:
BDM-1.png

3. Look for Startup Settings... and enter it:
BDM-2.png

4. Look for USB IRX and enter it:
BDM-3.png

5. Now browse through your memory card to search for USBD.IRX.
Your file should be in:
- mc0:/SYS-CONF/USBD.IRX or
- mc1:/SYS-CONF/USBD.IRX:
BDM-4.png

6. Look for USB Mass and enter it:
BDM-5.png

7. Now browse through your memory card to search for USBHDFSD.IRX.
Your file should be in:
- mc1:/SYS-CONF/USBHDFSD.IRX or
- mc1:/SYS-CONF/USBHDFSD.IRX:
BDM-6.png

8. Once you set these files you can press RETURN:

9. Press OK:

10. Your config should be saved:

How to update OPL:

What is BDM Assault:

In short:
exFAT USB driver for PS2.

I decided not to put (for now) apps for HDD in APP-HDD.
Apps for HDD will be in BOOT-HDD.
All apps will be copied into "hdd0:/__sysconf/FMCB/".

Guys What is ESR r10f direct and how to use it? I installed noobie package for modded ps2 which includes esr but I don't see it the main menu

ESR:
One is intended for launching games directly from dvd (but can also launch homebrew apps from DVDV discs, just SYSTEM.CNF and proper elf is needed) - "dvd direct" version.
The other is to launch elf files in either mcx:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF or mcx:/B?DATA-SYSTEM/BOOT.ELF - "mcard" version.
The third is "dvd direct off" version, which is almost the same as the "dvd direct" but will disable ESR after first full successful IOP reset (think about it as "mode 3" in hdloader. All should have similar compatibility (with obvious limitations for "off" version).

A suggestion to make your FMCB/FHDB NP more beginner friendly - since latest stable OPL is old now. With this small addition, beginners wouldn't have to use FMCB configurator to add latest OPL Beta to OSD-SYS hacked.

Code:
name_OSDSYS_ITEM_4 = -= Open PS2 Loader Beta v1.2.0 =-
path1_OSDSYS_ITEM_4 = mass:/APPS/OPNPS2LD.ELF

But don't add OPNPS2LD.ELF* to the package itself, it's up to the user to add OPNPS2LD.ELF to their APPS folder on USB drive.

* I choose this syntaxt because it's the one used on OPL "latest" release on OPL released page. One step less for the user to make a mistake.

Does FHDB fully work on unofficial HDD's now we have the MBR fix from PS2BBN? the PS2BBL is no longer needed so maybe KELFBinder needs an update also?

@ShaolinAssassin SAS apps are in use nowadays. What you suggesting is kind of obsolete and limited. ;)

@Kevstah2004 What you written have zero sense because:
  • FHDB always work with unofficial HDD, and does with HDD OSD patched by krHACKen.
  • FHDB have nothing to do with PSBBN and PS2BBL.
  • PS2BBL is needed if you want hw initialize and a bootloader, while not wants FHDB or HOSDM as OSD Update.
  • KELFBinder is needed if you want easy way to install bootstrap and other stuff.

Oh I am not surprised it is. But my experience in providing assistance on reddit teached me we should'nt expect too much from beginners, most of them barely understand how to use FMCB Configurator to add items to OSD-SYS hacked. My suggestion for creating a OPL beta placeholder already set up in mass:/APPS in FREEHDB.CNF & FREEMCB.CNF was merely to make them able to update their OPL version the simpliest way possible (downloading a file and copy it to USB doesn't requiere any PS2 knowledge, as opposed to use wLE and use psu copy/paste).

I mean does it circumvent the need for magicgate on hdd at least or is everything still signed?

On HDD, the Magic Gate is not used anywhere for anything. I'm pretty sure I told you that few months ago. :P

It is not a bad idea, but...

The main reason why I did not update FMCB Noobie Package with a newer OPL is that so far OPL v1.0.0 gives (IMHO) the best compatibility and it is less problematic than v1.1.0 or any latest (v1.2.0) beta.
I know that newer versions support\have:
- MX4SIO
- MMCE (MemCard Pro2)
- compressed ISO files in ZSO format
- i.LINK/IEEE1394/FireWire
- a new USB mass storage driver

However coping and configuring anything with MemCard Pro2 is quite simple.
There are even Pre built images with FMCB that contains newer OPL versions:
https://github.com/israpps/FreeMcBoot-Installer/releases.

Just FYI. MemCard Pro2 isn't the first MMCE and it is not the only one. First was SD2PSX, and while it is DYI device kind, many producers making them. Like i.e Bitfunx and PsxMemCard Gen2, Kaico and sd2psx.

And for MMCE, I recommending PSUja which brings only bare environment (all exploits, with pre-configured loaders, fm, Sony stylized icons, and in case of FMCB with BDMA drivers):
https://www.psx-place.com/resources/psuja.1570/

Plus adding software in SAS packages:

:sem blush: Kinda yes, but rom0:OSDSYS is still launched by the cracked & decrypted hosdsys elf from uLE it doesn't just inject it's code directly into the osdsys like funtuna or fmcb, idk why maybe it's incase the fsck fails so it can still load the original browser if the hosdsys assets can't be found on the hdd.

It seems to do it in stages
1. Load rom0:osdsys, search for hosdsys 100 or 110 on hdd.
2. Load MBR
3. fsck hdd health check.
4. Load hosdsys assets.
