PS3 Game résolution

LED monitors don't have perfect Blacks(at least average ones). IPS and VA are different technologies. I have Dell s2240l which is a very good budget IPS monitor. Best thing about IPS monitor is viewing angles and picture quality (compared to TN type monitors). But monitors are backlit with LEDs. So you won't see perfect black in IPS panels (and you can't create perfect black color with combination of 3 colors). Darker colors will always have this backlight bleeding issue whereas brighter colors will look much better.

Also the amount of backlight bleeding is a matter of luck. No kidding. Some IPS panels will have low backlight bleeding, some have more. There is not certainty about amount of backlight bleeding in LED monitors. Its hit or a miss.

I had CRT monitor until some time back. I remember that it was very good for Retro emulators (specially due to scale lines) as well as games with darkness like night missions etc. CRT will give you perfect black. I wonder how will CRTs perform with PS3. Of course, CRTs are a lot heavier, lot more power consuming and a lot bulky.

I have a super old HD CRT that is a beast. Takes two guys to lift the 30" screen but I have never seen blacks so perfect. Bought it years ago as it's only 60htz and actually works with light guns. One of the best screens ever for all around gaming.

yeah, I've heard that flat screens scatter light gun rays all over the place making those games unplayable.

i have yet to se IPS with no IPS glow.i actually prefer blacks on my OLED and my crt's are exceptionally good at that department but OLED's contrast between dark and light is unsurpassed, but CRT's softening of the image can't be replicated even on OLED's with any filters that exists (believe me,i've tried :) ).there's also nostalgia thing,we all remember those ps1 and ps2 games and especially in horror games that's a huge part in overall experience.for modern games i personally don't have that much need to play them on CRT or any kind of more potent softening, and actually prefer razor sharp image.

that being said i did played couple of games on my 16:9 xbr and it looks good, that's why i've kept it,but more so because of my movie and TV show collection than to play ps3 games on it.

Sony Trinitron HD CRTs (29 or 32 inch) are some of the best ones. But here's the catch. Its HUGE. And weighs around 150 pounds. Takes around 400W of power.

I am getting these for around $20 in good condition but these things are like white elephants. They are too much upkeep, too bulky and much costly on power consumption.

as i live in country with the cheapest power in europe that doesn't bother me one bit.also,i don't use it that much to care about that.that's only to consider if you would use it really really extensively and live in region with huge cost of electricity.in any other case difference on power bill would be meaningless.

space is what matters.either you have space for it or you don't.

So this thread was originally about forcing a 720p game into 1080p. But what about the other way? Rainbow 6 Vegas 1 was coded in 720p, but it auto-upscales into 1080p, which looks really blurry and somewhat dark. Could editing the PARAM.SFO force it to 720p? I mean, I just could change the PS3 resolution, but doing it just for this game and changing it back for everything else is a little annoying.

There is a VERY select few that you can add the option in the pram.sfo but your most likely not gonna have much luck with this. I think I found maybe three games that this works for but at a loss of performance.

@Mello_1993 and I are planning to test some games to find out which ones support the forcing resolution via PARAM.SFO, do you still remember which ones worked for you?
