PS2 [MX4SIO/SIO2SD] SD Card Adapter and SD-driver for the PS2 SIO2 interface

I'm having a hard time finding things that are broken with BDM4. Star Wars Battlefront 1 doesn't load missions. Evangelion Ayanami Raising Project hangs on boot. Other than that it's been very much smooth sailing.

Yeah BMD4 is great for me, I use it for my internal HDD, haven't found anything that doesn't boot yet, I've tried 100s of games. It boots stuff that I couldn't get working at all in official stable releases from internal HDD.

I don't use VMC, sounds like it's more trouble that it's worth, I don't want saves getting corrupted! I have plenty of official memory cards anyway

I haven't had any luck with virtual memory cards though. No matter if I make them in OPL or in OPL Manager, I get the same messages about them being fragmented or corrupted or whatever about half the time.

Hmmm, strange, for me VMCs all work perfectly, (created in OPL Manager).

I recommend formatting the MicroSD / SD card to 32 kilobytes (exFAT), i am using both Toshiba Exceria and Samsung Evo Plus and they worked the best, some of my friends using other brands like PNY had issues, so they changed to Samsung Evo Plus and the issues were fixed.

Didn't you say exFAT 16KB clusters before?

Yes exFAT with either 16 kilobytes or 32 kilobytes, both work just fine.

Personally i had more success with 32 kilobytes for VMCs, for example Klonoa 2's VMC didn't work when i formatted exFAT with 16 kilobytes allocation unit size, however Klonoa 2's VMC did work with 32 kilobytes.

Oui, en effet, les clusters en 32Ko sont mieux (BDM4) et, ceci même pour des petites tailles de SDCard (pour moi, une unique 32Go).

Yes, indeed, 32 KB clusters are better (BDM4) and this even for small SDCard sizes (for me, a single 32GB).

Algol.

Hmm, I'd better reformat :)

One thing I haven't tried yet is taking a save file from beyond that point and loading it up in game to see if it instacrashes or plays through.

I reformatted my card to exFAT w/ 32kb clusters and loaded up a save file from beyond that initial area, I was able to play for a bit before it crashed again somewhere else (leaving the 2nd floor of the apartment building after getting the flashlight). Weirdly this allowed me to load up a save from before the initial crash and play through where it normally crashed. It eventually crashed again at the second point, and this time it corrupted the save file somehow even though autosave is off. My guess is this crash has something to do with disk access because it seems to be able to handle a certain amount of data being loaded in but eventually just shits the bed and corrupts the card

so all games, no matter how large or small all go into the DVD folder on your MicroSD card.
No?! Why should they? The folder is still used to SET the disc-type!
I formatted my Samsung Evo SD card in exFAT. Both BDM3
Yeah no... That makes no sense! BDM3 never supported ExFAT.
  • To have BDM3 working, do I really need to keep the 2 versions of OPL that were given in the detailed guide?
These are probably "BDM(1)" [special 1627] and "BDM3" [special 1629 + a fix for DECKARD-PS2s]. Keep BDM3 and test BDM4 and the official newer OPL Versions.
  • Do I still need to keep DVD games, 4gb+ games and possibly CD games on separate SD cards to avoid the issues I had at the very beginning, despite using BDM3?
You should not have a problem with any build having those games on one card.
  • What exactly was happening with my games where keeping them all in one card led to them not booting up after 1 play session?
Maybe some issue with the written configs. IDK.
  • Does BDM3 make the OPL featured at Heldergametech obsolete or are there games that can only boot with the latter? Are there better options for my MC2ISO adapter?
BDM4 and the newest official OPL Beta-builds! Keep trying those newer builds.

VMCs still (currently) need to be non-fragmented!!! Defrag them and the info-pop-up won't come up!
does the latest version work fine with exfat?
v1.2.0-Beta-1938-f36e568
It should!

Hmmm, maybe try the latest official OPL beta, i think it has checksumming enabled which might help with games that crash while playing. However, i personally would only recommend this for Slim PS2 75K models and higher (Deckard), because checksumming will cause stuttering on PS2 70K models and lower (Phats).

Yes you are 100% right.

...i just tested some CD games that were not working in the DVD folder, now some do work in the CD folder :D

So yeah all CD games should be placed into the CD folder!

Edit: @Algol ...if you tested any CD games placed in the DVD folder and they were not working, try placing them in the CD folder to see if this helps.

No. All my CDs are installed in the CD folder and my DVDs in the DVD folder, I do not change anything to this very old rule of OPL. My CDs have only been translated into ISO format since my first tests (many years), they are not in BIN/CUE format and always have been. The results obtained and quoted in the compatibility file are compliant and real. The BDM4 only allowed a few to work in addition to those that did not work under the BDM3.
I tested the ZSO format but it compresses DVDs very little and even less CDs, it improves almost nothing, it's disappointing.

Ah you already had done this from before, o.k great. Well, it's good that not only BDM4 does exFAT + VMC, but also improves slightly the game compatibility.

Personally i haven't tested ZSO on MX4SIO.

Apologies! FAT32 @ 64k for BDM3, exFAT @ 32k for BDM4. Just read a suggestion to format in 16k which I'm doing now to test Ridge Racer V.

Also, ZSO works great with BDM4 (my partner tried CATZ and DOGZ with perfect success).

Finally, the one game I couldn't get working with BDM4 is Star Ocean 3 (Disc 1).

Use the new BDM4 only, now we can use exFAT and VMC with BDM4
Download it from TnA's post here:-

Thank you both for the link and the clarifications! Today I finally got around to installing BDM4 onto my PS2 and formatted my micro sd card to Exfat. I tested out a CD game, several DVD games, and I encountered an issue. When trying to load 4gb+ games, I got the message "Error. Game is fragmented". I have never seen this before and thus, I have no clue what to do. I read that a defragger program might fix this, but can damage the sd card apparently? What's the best solution?

Finally, in a previous version of OPL, I was able to play up to 4 players in a game called Bleach: Blade Battlers 2nd (after altering the PADEMU settings), with the third and fourth players being connected via the USB ports of the console. With BDM4 however, the settings I used before were lost and so far I cannot get 4 players detected despite tinkering around with it. Does anyone know what are the exact settings needed? I have a physical Multitap but just like prior OPLs, it isn't detected by my console after booting a game through BDM.

Thank you for any help and advice you're able to offer.

I think I'll wait for the fragmentation thing to get sorted out before I start messing with virtual memory cards. As much as I like the feature, that's the kind of line where it becomes too much of a PitA to use. :)

Just pull off everything from the card, format it and copy it back in one shot (not multiple PARALLEL copies)!

This is the ultimate way of copying games in usb or sd card I think. The fragmentation is nothing for PS2 if you copy files in right way. I always make a folder on pc and put all opl files/folders and games in it and check the size of the folder to not exits out of my drive capacity. At the end I set opl manager to that folder, download arts and set know modes and when everything got prepared I do a select all copy and paste in root of the drive.
